Mar 19 2009 - 12:45pm Michelle Obama really has this women's-history-month thing down! Today she organized a star-studded career day that was held at schools throughout the Washington, DC, area.
Friends of the first lady, including Alicia Keys, Sheryl Crow, actress Alfre Woodard, and makeup mogul Bobbi Brown shared inspiring stories of success.
It's a nice idea, but I would be more excited for a daughter of mine to talk to women who had achieved success in a field other than entertainment. I mean, how realistic is it to aspire to be
the next Sheryl Crow?
When I was in school, we dodged as much of career day talks as we could - Sheryl Crow might at least hold their attention. And show business is a fairly difficult field to succeed in and more
so for women than men, so I wouldn't sneer at having a woman who has address my kid's class.
agree genesis. Also someone who leads a more normal life versus the Hollywood types in their fast lane lifestyles; personally I am not thrilled to use them as a role models for children.
Once again people jump the gun to criticize her. If you would have read the article, 21 women were speaking, and they weren't all entertainers. They included: Gen. Ann E. Dunwoody, the
first female four-star general in the armed services; Nancy Brinker, who served as ambassador to Hungary during the Bush administration; and Mae C. Jemison, a former astronaut, and Debra L.
Lee, the chief executive of Black Entertainment Television.
It would be so much easier if you would actually research what you are going to b*tch about before you get started. Just a suggestion.

You read every linked article in its entirety before commenting?
Your statement regarding reading the entire article Jillness is not valid given people ARE reading the article posted. Don't think it is reasonable to think people are going to read links
before they post. Maybe you are just a bit over sensitive to criticism of the first lady.
The statement written above is NOT an article. At best it's a blurb or a summation of more information found at the sited sources. Jillness wasn't referring to reading JUST what was written
by CitizenSugar, but going further and reading the actual article. And by THEY, I can only assume you were referring to "Liberals" and I know that I DO read the sited source for additional
information. I also know that many Conservatives and Moderates do so as well...and it adds to a more intelligent conversation, and instead of endless nitpicking.
Article, blurb, whatever. It's unreasonable to expect everyone to read every linked article before commenting. If there's something we missed in the article, great, bring it up, but there's
no need to be rude about it.
Rude and condescending clearly is in the eye of the reader.
Perhaps rather than doing the sterotypical 'blaming the leftist Hollywood loving media' for highlighting female stars, you should wonder why that's all you saw in the article. Perhaps your
lack of curiosity or interest in finding value in Obama's efforts led you to stop paying attention once you found a point to criticize.
Honestly, I could care less if you think I am rude. I called you guys out for complaining about something you weren't informed about...something you didn't even take the effort to be informed
about. Perhaps you are fine with operating this way, but just know there are others out there who will call you on your intentional ignorance.
Just because you chose to bury your head in the sand does not mean that I will follow your lead.
Unlike the intellectual and curious types like Jillnes and stephley, some of us can only stomach a limited amount of Obama worshipping articles or as you say blurbs.
We did read what was posted. We just didn't follow the links as you did. Ummm, and I think we comprehended what we read. But maybe we need someone like yourself to break it down for us who
can't understand.
You can only stomach a limited amount of Obama articles; you read only what you can tolerate; you feel perfectly justified criticizing her based on the limited amount you read; and you feel
justified in criticizing anyone who points out that the facts you chose not to read negate your criticism.
Sounds like a lot of effort just to let people know you don't like the Obamas and feel superior to them.
Steph, The information people commented on is the three short paragraphs posted. People did not post in response to the rest of article showing more photos of Michelle, her friends and the
excited students. I have to disagree with Jillness that people need "actually research" which I gather means to follow the links before posting on what has been posted.
Oh, I don't feel superior to the Obamas, only to those that idolize the Obamas based on promises he will not be able to fulfill.
The links are there for a reason. Why comment on something you are not informed about? Several people seemed to think that only female celebrities were a part of career day. If the very short
linked article had been read, that misconception would have been cleared up.
good grief. We do our best with the time we have. Can we give it a rest about who didn't click on all the links. This isn't suppose to be stressful and intense or is it.

" Mrs. Obama,...said she had long dreamed of gathering an “amazing group of women” to talk to young people."
I think it's great that she's putting all these terrific ideas into motion and that she's reaching out to all different people.
1It's a nice idea, but I would be more excited for a daughter of mine to talk to women who had achieved success in a field other than entertainment. I mean, how realistic is it to aspire to be the next Sheryl Crow?
2agree modus. It is very unrealistic -- similar to a young girl comparing herself to a covergirl model who is very tall and extremely slender.
3Exactly. I think it would be great to give girls an opportunity to talk to Meg Whitman or female senators or governors, or even news reporters.
4C'mon, now...they did have a "make-up mogul" there too...
All kidding aside, it will be fun for the kids, so I'm okay with it.
5When I was in school, we dodged as much of career day talks as we could - Sheryl Crow might at least hold their attention. And show business is a fairly difficult field to succeed in and more so for women than men, so I wouldn't sneer at having a woman who has address my kid's class.
6Yeah I think it would be better for them to talk to a politician or scientist but they'd most likely say "Meg who?"
7agree genesis. Also someone who leads a more normal life versus the Hollywood types in their fast lane lifestyles; personally I am not thrilled to use them as a role models for children.
8Where were Oprah and Gayle?
9Normal like a Citibank or Wells Fargo vice president, or someone from GM?

12modus, definitely they don't read every link from what I can tell.
13oh yes, Gail and Oprah were last spotted at a Glen Beck tea party protesting their ever dwindling millions~
14Take a motrin, Jillness.

Rude!
18Okay, sorry, I meant chill pill. Take a chill pill.

20Jillness's remarks were rude and condescending when she said,
It would be so much easier if you would actually research what you are going to b*tch about before you get started. Just a suggestion.
21We all can agree that the Obama's are a bit star struck. Like uh, where was her husband but on the Leno Show.
It is logical to assume the leftist-hollywood loving media would highlight the female stars versus more ordinary females like us.
22bren, totally agree
23I can't believe Oprah wasn't there. I bet she is pissed.
24Rude and condescending clearly is in the eye of the reader.

27Lazybones, it doesn't take Obama worship to read and comprehend something.
If you are going to complain about something, take a moment to make sure you actually understand what you are complaining about. It isn't that hard.
28We did read what was posted. We just didn't follow the links as you did. Ummm, and I think we comprehended what we read. But maybe we need someone like yourself to break it down for us who can't understand.

31I'm sure you've got someone in mind who would have done a much better job...
32This is absolutely ridiculous. You are seriously saying people should read every linked article in its entirety before commenting? I'm so sure you do.

34Yes, the links are there for a reason. They are there so if you'd like more information or to see the source, you can click through.
