Très Bizarre: Australian Brothels Offer Seniors a Discount

Next week is National Seniors Week in Australia. In order to get in the spirit, Melbourne brothels and escort services are offering a senior discount! Any brothel or escort aligned with Australian Adult Entertainment will be offering anywhere from $5 off, to a full 50 percent discount on sexual services.

A spokesman for the sex-industry group said:

"Many senior members of the community already use our member’s services, whether visiting a brothel or having an escort visit their place of residence, including aged care residential centers."

It seems seniors are more sexually active than younger generations would think. There's a growing movement for a "privacy room" in nursing homes, places where residents can do anything they want, including having sex. I guess they need somewhere to bring their half-priced escorts!

The Case For "Privacy Rooms" in Nursing Homes

If you fear growing old, here's one more thing to worry about: it's almost impossible to have sex in a nursing home.

An op-ed in the LA Times this week explains why "privacy rooms" - places where residents can do anything they want - are necessary if the elderly are to retain their right to sex. See, basic privacy is elusive in most residences. It's practically impossible to masturbate in your own room without a nosy nurse or aide walking in! Without a realistic expectation of privacy, no one will even think about getting busy.

Of course there are progressive exceptions to the rule, such as the Hebrew Home at Riverdale in New York. The Hebrew Home was the first nursing home to develop a policy that protects the sexual rights of residents. The staff there is trained to respect a person's right to express their sexuality, while learning how to respond when a person makes sexual advances toward someone with a disability such as Alzheimer's disease or dementia.

I wonder if the aging baby boomers will bring a full-on sexual revolution to nursing homes?

Senior Centers Prepare for Baby Boom 60 Years Later

With 8,000 boomers turning 60 everyday, the US must prepare for the looming senior boom. Like it did with every other episode of life, the baby boomer generation intends to leave its own groovy mark on the golden chapter of life. As a result, senior centers want to do their best to weather the next generational clash between their original senior clients, and the newcomers.

One senior-center worker envisions paninis and mock cocktails replacing fruit cups and club sandwiches. Recreational centers for the well aged will most likely drop the word "senior" from their titles. Activity schedules will go beyond card games and Bingo, adding Nintendo Wii competitions, exercise classes, and motorcycle outings.

By 2030, 20 percent of the US population will be over 65, and 35 percent over 50. Such a sharp increase in the rate of elderly people in society suggests that senior centers really could simply become community centers. Maybe the young people will show up for a motorcycle ride, too!

Smarty Pants Prove Brainiacs in Spelling and Philosophy

Great minds think alike - wisdom isn't wasted on the young. This weekend an Oregon man won this year's Great American Think-Off, a national philosophy competition asking ordinary people to debate extraordinary questions. This year's question was, "Does immigration strengthen or threaten the United States?"

Craig Allen, of West Linn, OR, won a gold medal this weekend when a live audience in New York Mills decided he was most convincing when arguing that the system of immigration and immigration policy is broken and that it encourages an influx of illegal immigrants and poses a threat to the country.

During the debate, the four finalists touched on what it means to be an American and stressed that American identity is evolving. He wasn't the only adult winning laurels for being a smarty pants this weekend.

Larry Grossman won this year’s senior national spelling bee correctly spelling the word “debouch” and snatching victory. Grossman, a Northwood, ND resident is a teacher and has won the North Dakota state spelling bee six times already. “This is a great feeling. ‘Great’ doesn’t seem like a very adequate word but that’s all I can think of on short notice.”

The event, hosted by AARP, had about forty-seven competitors from twenty-four states in this year’s senior bee. Those competing were invited following wins in recent regional bees and were required to be fifty years of age or older. The winner received $500 and some big ol' bragging rites. Rights. Writes. Aw, ask Larry.

I can only imagine what is going through the heads of these seniors as they recite - verbatim - lines from the Shakespearean show The Hills. Here's a thought: "The Golden Girls could kick their asses!" (Every time I see "Les Deux" I hear one of these Hollywood brats saying "Les Duh!" You know that's how they pronounce it.)

Remember when hipsters started wearing ironic t-shirts? Like, tees with random brands on them and D.A.R.E. drug awareness messages? Then they migrated to ironic trucker caps. Well, I'm throwing another hat into the ring. I'm hoping that I can get hipsters to start wearing these hats that say "Don't Forget My Senior Discount!" with skinny jeans and Chuck Taylors. It's only a matter of time - hell, I want one! Especially for the senior discount.

Seniors Suspended For Booze Tee: Good Lesson or Too Far?

Seniors at a Michigan high school are in hot water over a graduation t-shirt. The shirt reads "Puschin' It To The Limit" on the front (a play on Busch beer) and "Class of .08 Seniors" (the blood-alcohol limit for drivers in Michigan.)

Almost 50 students were suspended for wearing the shirt of which the student body president said, "There was a lot of different ways it could be taken, but I'm pretty sure everyone knows that the message of the shirt related to underage drinking." The students were warned against the sartorial statement ahead of time, but those who ignored the warning will have to earn back the ability to attend prom and graduation.

Since it's the time of year when parents worry most about drinking and driving, was no tolerance of the saucy message the right move?

Aide Says Obama Burdened With Supporters' Unrealistic Hopes

Is the hope of Obama supporters, entirely too audacious? Perhaps so, according to one of Obama's own senior aides. In an interview with the Sunday Telegraph in the midst of Obama's big trip abroad, it appears like that famous hope has become a burden wrapped in unrealistic expectations of what Obama can actually achieve if he becomes president.

Greg Craig, one of Obama's top foreign policy advisers with him on the trip said that Obama is well aware of the burden of hope:

He is very conscious of it. He knows he has become a vehicle for peoples' hopes and dreams and expectations and we all fear that such expectations tend to be unrealistic.

In his trip that includes a swing through Europe, Obama is expected to meet with Gordon Brown to encourage the UK to proceed with planned troop cuts in Iraq next year to free them up to redeploy in Afghanistan.

A German magazine, Der Spiegel reported that Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki had:

Supported prospective US Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama's proposal that US troops should leave Iraq within 16 months . . . US presidential candidate Barack Obama talks about 16 months. That, we think, would be the right timeframe for a withdrawal, with the possibility of slight changes.

Everyone all the way up to the White House believed this notion - going so far as to accidentally send out the news to a huge distribution list (always check before hitting "Send," folks.)

Making the email oops worse, it turns out that the whole Maliki quote, was actually a huge misunderstanding. Der Spiegel it seems mistranslated. Maliki's spokesman said that statements by Maliki or any other member of the government should not be seen as support for any US presidential candidate.

Are Obama supporters placing unrealistic expectations on what the reality of Obama can actually do? Will there come a point when they find out they've been way too audacious?
