Dear Sugar,

I've been dating a great guy for five years now, but often I am annoyed by his sarcastic, hostile, and almost snobbish attitude. Sometimes it just seems like he can't be nice or get along with anyone - he's even mean to his friends. I love him very much, and he says that he loves me, too, but I'm not sure I can handle this anymore. We've been through so much together, but lately things are getting too hard.

My family doesn't trust him, and ever since I got into a spat with his brother whom he lives with, conversations with his family have been very strained. I feel uncomfortable when I'm at his parents' house, and I can tell they now have some animosity towards me. I've tried talking to my boyfriend about all of these issues, but he doesn't like to discuss them so instead he ignores me, and they get worse. In fact, he can't have a real adult conversation without getting angry and being childish. Am I just completely stuck? What do I do?

If you're asking whether or not you're stuck with his sarcastic behavior then the answer is yes. As long as you stay with someone who refuses to change his bad attitude or even discuss it, then you'll always be dealing with it. However, you're never stuck in your relationship. It can take a long time to accept and process, but learning that love is not always enough to make for a healthy or happy relationship is an important lesson. Things like communication, respect, personal responsibilities, and family can all play a very serious role in determining the success of a couple.

It sounds like you've just about hit your breaking point, so perhaps now is the time to try taking some time apart while you both figure out if you want to continue to invest yourselves in this relationship. And don't be afraid to let your boyfriend know that his inability to talk with you makes it impossible for your relationship to grow or change. I think it's important that he understands the role he plays in your frustration. Whatever happens, always remind yourself that you're never stuck in an unhappy situation; there's always a solution, even if it's a scary one.

I sometimes have a hard time differentiating sarcasm from brash dialog. Since delivery is essential when it comes to sarcasm, one has to be convincing when purposely stating the opposite of what they mean. Sure, there's a time and a place for sarcasm, but then there are those people with those dry sense of humors that don't know when to draw the line. Some people love it while others could do without it, so do tell ladies, how do you feel about sarcasm?

Bad Ass Buttons

I always thought buttons were an old lady fad. Either that, or they were strictly reserved for those stylish blue vests worn at Wal-Mart. I was wrong. With the debut of ~~bitchy~~ sassy buttons, teenyboppers and messenger bag toting folks started making "statements" all over the place. My personal fave is the one above. It's quite charming, really.

...Even a caveman can do it! Nick Kroll, of Geico commercial fame, recently appeared on "The View" and put Sherri Shepherd in her place on the whole evolution issue. Those cavemen sure know how to hold a grudge! But at least he didn't go "barbaric" and bang a club over her head, right? (Although I wouldn't have blamed him if he did.)

What the British Make of the "Pig" - It's Not Good for Obama

No, don't worry - this has nothing to do with the actual "pig" comment - but instead the analysis it's sparked from BBC's Matt Frei. The perspective, she is astonishing - it's often those in that sweet spot of entrenched detachment who pin the tail on the old donkey. I'll begin at his ending.

Frei says of the pig poke:

If this is a crisis it is largely of Barack Obama's own making. The brazen agent of change, the audacious interpreter of American dreams, the rousing rhetorician is sounding like an electoral actuary. The Democratic nominee has been boxed into a corner, endlessly reacting to the outrageous slurs and arrows, unable to steer the conversation towards the issues and the future. Ever since Sarah Palin has erupted onto the scene, Barack Obama has been caught like a moose in headlights.

After beginning the piece (which is absolutely worth a read, it was hard to choose what to quote, it was all brilliant). With a dose of pointed sarcasm that somehow only works in a British accent, Frei eviscerates the American electorate, media, and any consumer of fact for getting caught up in the pig hype, but pins its direct success on:

The proud founding member of the "bad boys club" at the US Naval Academy, John "Wayne" McCain himself is hanging the noose of sexism around the feline Barack Obama, who is more in touch with his inner woman than any candidate since Hillary Clinton. And the Republicans are getting away with it. This is electioneering genius; it makes Karl Rove look like Bob the Builder.

Frei concludes that Obama, "needs to rediscover his mojo, appeal to the voter's gut and not just their frontal lobe or he too will become Alaskan roadkill." Do you agree? Will Sarah Palin be the end of Barack Obama?
