What's Up With Not Wearing Your Wedding Ring?

I'm sure you all noticed - if not that night, by now after seeing all the coverage - that Michelle Obama was not wearing her wedding ring on inauguration night. Since she wore that enormous diamond sparkler on her left middle finger, her wedding band might have been too much, but its absence sure has people talking!

Leaving the symbolic token of marriage at home doesn't necessarily mean anything, but what's your take on giving the ring a rest every once in a while? Would/do you ever do it, or are you the type to wear your rings all the time, no matter the occasion?

Is It Hard to Apologize When You're in the Wrong?

The drama between Lauren and Audrina over Justin Bobby continued last night on The Hills. Even though Audrina finally came to the realization that the rumor about her best friend and boyfriend was just that, she was still pretty apprehensive about apologizing to Lauren. Admitting your wrongdoings can be a daunting task, but tell me, have you ever been afraid or nervous to apologize when you were in the wrong like Audrina was last night?

Has a Friend Ever Falsely Accused You of Something?

Last night's episode of The Hills was one of the most dramatic yet. We saw Lauren and Audrina's spat over Justin Bobby unfold before the show aired, but watching how it really went down made me realize just how ridiculous Audrina's accusations were. While I understand her reasons behind confronting both Justin and Lauren, their first denial should have been good enough for Audrina to simply drop the issue. I've never been falsely accused of something by a friend before, so I can only guess how frustrating it must be to defend your word against someone else's. Have any of you ever been accused by a friend of doing something you had absolutely nothing to do with?

In fact, most workplaces are rife with gossip as are many circles of friends. That said, not all gossip is bad; some rumors are simply a matter of misinformation. Is the John Edwards Love Child Story Newsworthy?

OK, I'm sure you've heard. John Edwards may or may not have a mistress and a love child. I've had my fingers crammed in my ears, doing the la-la-la-can't-hear-you song, all week. But now this weird meta story has developed from the whole affair (ahem): should the media be covering it - and if not, what does that mean?

The story was originally broken by the National Enquirer - Edwards was supposedly caught visiting his mistress and love child at an LA hotel. (The reporters have since filed criminal charges.) In the double whammy of who the source is, and the scandalous topic, some news outlets have run with it, some dropped it like a hot potato, and some have been banned from talking about it.

Fox ran an update yesterday with the hotel guard saying that when Edwards found out about the reporters, "his face just went totally white." Some at Slate are asking why the MSM isn't covering the story, citing a double standard (why Larry Craig and not Edwards). The Daily Kos says it's right not to cover it considering the source, and the LA Times issued a memo banning their bloggers from writing about the story.

Is it a cover-up or a double standard? Does the story need more investigation? Or is it just good judgment to let the story go?

Sunday Confessional: I Spread a Dirty Secret

I'm close with my team at work; we often meet for happy hours and even get together on the weekends. About a year ago we hired a new girl who became fast friends with the whole group, including me. But a few months ago something in her changed. Now I find that she's increasingly competitive with me, but not in a professional sense. Instead, she's competitive when it comes to just about everything else.

When I get gleeful about losing five pounds, she starts working out every day and comes in bragging about the 10 pounds she just lost. If I host a cocktail party at my house, within weeks she's planning her own and literally tallying the amount of people that comes to each. Most recently, she started flirting with a bartender that we see often whom she knows I have been pursuing. Needless to say, she drives me absolutely nuts - I feel like I'm in high school again!

She also tends to drink way too much when we go out, and usually ends up sleeping with someone (it's been a coworker on more than one occasion). For whatever reason, she's inclined to confide in me about her sexual escapades so I usually know what everyone else on our team is just speculating about. Recently she told me that she slept with one of our biggest clients after a dinner meeting - a big no-no at our company. This time I was so fed up with her that I decided to spread it around the office. It felt satisfying at the time, but now her job's on the line. It's not like I made something up, but I still feel guilty that she might lose her job. Can I be forgiven for spreading her secret around?

Handle This: Someone Spread a Mean Rumor

You and your new guy agreed that you would wait a while to have sex for the first time, but your relationship continues to get stronger and stronger. Just when you think you guys are finally getting to the exclusive couple level, he starts acting strange; it seems like he's slightly less affectionate towards you. You try not to worry about it, but when a friend approaches you about something they heard through the grapevine, the pieces start to fall into place.

Your friend reveals to you that he heard from another individual - one that was in the same fraternity as your man - that you had an STI. You're completely shocked as you've never had an STI before, and have never confided in anyone about the possibility of having one.

You realize that your guy has "known" about this ugly rumor for the past couple weeks. You're not only embarrassed that he obviously believes it, but angry that he didn't talk to you about it. There's no way to set the story straight without a confrontation, so how would you handle this?

Who Would You Pick As Your Mate?

It has been rumored for years now that Tom Cruise was shopping for a wife, so to speak, before he nabbed Katie, and according to Andrew Morton, the author of Tom's unauthorized biography, Jennifer Garner was one of his top choices. Of course this can't make Katie feel very good, but the concept is pretty wild if you think about it. Even though we all must decide who to marry, it's easier for someone as famous as Tom Cruise to have his pick of the litter. For the sake of playing house, if you could handpick your mate, who would you choose?

Office gossip is inevitable, but you can find yourself in deep water if you're in the middle of it, so here are some tips on staying out of the firestorm at work.

Remember that the people you work with are your co-workers, not your best friends, so always maintain a level of professionalism.
Drinking too much at your office party or acting out of control at your work picnic are surefire ways to have people talk about you, so keep yourself in check.
Make it a policy of yours not to gossip about others in your office, or else you will find that others will gossip about you.
Gossip is typically false or fabricated information spread through the grapevine, so take everything with a grain of salt and before you act on something you've heard, always confirm that your information is accurate.
The only way to keep something a true secret is to stay mum, so don't tell even a trusted co-worker anything that you wouldn't want everyone in the office to know.
If you catch someone spreading office gossip about you, the best thing to do is nip it in the bud ASAP before it gets to the wrong ears and damages your credibility at work.

Dear Sugar,

Ever since I met the guy I am currently dating, I've been having the best of times. We're great friends and when I'm with him, I feel like I can be myself - I don't have to pretend to be someone I'm not just to please him. We're getting to be pretty close now, and I used to be so sure that this was what I wanted, but now I'm having second thoughts.

When we started seeing each other, rumors started to sky-rocket. They aren't rumors about us; they were rumors of his past that have been troubling me. According to everyone, he's a player. The thing about dating and starting a new relationship is you have to treat your relationship like it's the only one you have both ever experienced. We all have pasts, we all have done our fair share of things we aren't proud of with ex's, but if you continue to put so much emphasis on rumors, you might ruin a potentially great relationship.

Just because he was considered a "player" before he met you, it isn't to say that he can't be a great boyfriend to someone he truly cares about. Being single and playing the field is important when trying to figure out what it is that you like and don't like. Remember, you have to kiss a lot of frogs before you find your prince.

Trust your gut instincts with this guy. If you haven't already had the exclusive talk, now's the time to do so. Once you are on the same page, leave the past in the past and try your hardest to ignore idle gossip and enjoy your time together. Good luck!
