Oh Snap! Beatlemania Invades Abbey Road

It was <strike>20</strike> 40 years ago today when the Beatles sauntered across a crosswalk on Abbey Road to shoot one of the most iconic album covers of all time. Today in London, fans flocked to the famous intersection to celebrate the anniversary. A Beatles tribute band mingled with throngs of Beatlemaniacs, who posed for photos and signed the wall of Abbey Road studios. Check out the crazy gallery below.

Georgia Considers English-Only Driver's Test - Why?

Georgia lawmakers may soon make trying to get a driver's license an even bigger headache for some residents. The state legislature is considering a bill that would require potential drivers to take the written test in English and without a translator. It seems like a silly idea to me.

Not only could this keep nonfluent speakers from getting to and from their jobs, it will probably lead to an increased number of unlicensed drivers on the road. And that puts English speakers at risk, too. In addition, critics argue that it further isolates non-English speakers, could discourage foreign companies from investing in Georgia, and unfairly targets minorities who can't benefit from the state's nonexistent public transportation system.

Proponents say the bill will increase public safety, since drivers need to read road signs. But the driving test and road sign test are already administered in English. Do you think it makes sense to limit the written test, too?

Source

German Village Up For Sale on eBay

For only $405,000 you can own a village in Saxony. That's the bidding price for Liebon, Germany, which is being sold on eBay.

Thrown in with the town of Liebon is a playground, village pond, a small shop, two road signs, and population of eight people. Sounds like a steal!

You'll also own a little piece of history. The township dates back to the year 1321. How much would you pay for it?

The Minutemen Adopt-a-Highway - Allowed to Keep It Clean?

When the San Diego Minutemen, an anti-illegal immigration group known for taking border patrol laws into their own hands became a member of Adopt-a-Highway (the keep-it-clean volunteer road service) they were quite surprised by the stretch of highway they were given. Their assigned turf was near a Border Patrol checkpoint on Interstate 5, a main route known for carrying illegal migrants into the United States from Mexico.

The state however has since decided to remove the sign crediting their litter patrolling. They fear demonstrators or vandals would create a safety hazard along the highway - as well as fearing harm to the Minutemen who would be clearing litter on that stretch. To see their response, read more.

The Minutemen contend otherwise. Their attorney said, “we can’t have our free speech because if we do, people who don’t like it might become unruly and unlawful.” And made a more pointed accusation by saying, “we were moved to silence our message in response to pressure from the open border advocates and the Latino caucus.” The US District Judge appeared to agree with the Minutemen on that point. “It would seem you’re saying you’re allowing the people who are unhappy with the message to dictate who can be in the program.”

The Adopt-a-Highway has had another controversial patron in the past. In 2005, the Ku Klux Klan adopted a stretch in Missouri and when the Adopt-a-Highway group tried to discontinue their membership, the Supreme Court sided with the KKK despite the Adopt-a-Highway’s regulation prohibiting groups that deny membership with a documented history of violence. State legislators - to contrast the image of a hate-based group advertising on publicly-owned land - renamed the length of highway adopted by the KKK, the Rosa Parks Highway.

In the Minutemen's case, the lawyer for the state said that the Adopt-a-Highway signs are just a "thank-you" from the state, not political messages protected under the First Amendment. If the Minutemen are doing the work of keeping the road clean, are they entitled to a sign? Was the state right to remove the sign before it caused trouble? Should controversial groups be allowed to volunteer - and get credit?

Source

CNN Uses Fake Republican to Hit McCain? Real Ones on Road!

In a doom-and-gloom message from CNN today, it seemed like all was lost for the Republican candidate - no young voter was ever going to be inspired by time-tested McCain. Except, it's all a fake! According to a press release, CNN used a phony College Republican to dummy up the story.

The CNN piece quoted Eric Pearlmutter, a supposed College Republican at USC. Pearlmutter said, "We try to get people out to our College Republican meetings, but we can't seem to get the same amount of support." Seems damning - except that the real USC College Republican President Ben Myers says, "I have never met Eric Pearlmutter. I have never seen him at a College Republican meeting. He is not on our membership roster. I don't know why someone would think he speaks for us. As far as I know, he could be a Democrat." Whoa!

Update: According to TruthCaucus, the disputed CNN story was taken down for a period this evening. The name of the source, Eric Pearlmutter, may have been misspelled (the real spelling is possibly Eric Perlmutter-Gumbiner) though even so, Perlmutter isn't listed as an officer of the USC College Republicans. Plus his quote sounds very familiar. . . .

Update II: Interestingly, there seems to be a producer at CNN named Bruce Perlmutter. I wonder if he's related to the source of the quote?

Update III: CNN has admitted the error, via the LA Times saying, “Eric Perlmutter appeared on today’s American Morning segment about young Republicans on college campuses. While he attends USC and says that he is a registered Republican, he was inadvertently identified on-screen as a member of the USC College Republicans organization. We regret that error. We have invited Ben Myers, the president of the USC College Republicans organization, to appear on American Morning at a future time.”

In the meantime, there are real young Republicans on the road, crossing country for McCain. To see their story, read more.

Want proof that young people are excited about McCain? A group of four intrepid college Repubs are on the ultimate road trip - swinging across the country, heading coast to coast through 21 states without ever leaving red districts. Their mission is called Where Is the Red?, and it's pulling out all the stops to answer that question - honestly.

Knowing that the youth vote will play a pivotal vote in this election, the GOP road-trippers are volunteering for campaigns, inspiring College Republicans, and signing up voters. You can follow their every move through photos, videos, and their blog - not to mention the Google Map/GPS feature that shows exactly where the real young Republicans are - even if it's not on CNN.

8 Tips For Newlyweds Moving In Together

Deciding to wait until marriage to move in together is a choice that many couples make. And though any couple's move-in is a serious step, there’s something particularly significant about newlyweds starting a life together. It’s exhilarating, but certainly a little scary, so I’ve come up with some tips for moving in with your new spouse.

Talk money beforehand. Discussing and deciding who’s paying for what prior to signing a lease or shelling out a down payment will save you many potential headaches down the road.

Be prepared for an adjustment. Once you’re living together there are certain parts of your relationship that will naturally change. Whether those changes are good or bad will be determined based on your attitude toward them, so stay positive.

Figure out both of your expectations regarding cleanliness. And if they’re different, come up with a compromise you both can live with.

To see the rest just read more.

It’s likely that you and your new husband don’t share the same style when it comes to household décor. Instead of battling it out over every piece of furniture, just come up with an entirely new style that can work for both of you.

As far as making your home habitable - signing up for utilities, fixing up the odds and ends, decorating, etc. - don’t make the common assumption that everything has to be done together. Let each of you take on a responsibility that you’re good at or have an interest in.

It’s OK to keep your own space. Everyone needs personal space, so don’t feel guilty or hurt if you and your husband want to have your own nook, drawer, room, cabinet, or area.

As with every aspect of a relationship, communication is extremely important. Talk about your needs, boundaries, and concerns before they become full-fledged issues.

Take a moment or two each day to show your appreciation to the other. Whether it’s an affectionate hug and kiss, or simple a “thank you,” it’s important to recognize everything the other person does - it will make for a more harmonious relationship in the long term.

Removing All Traffic Laws Makes Town Safer! Make Sense?

A town in Germany has abolished all traffic laws, signs, and crosswalks. Sound like a recipe for bumper cars meets demolition derby? Not according to town officials. In fact, getting rid of all the laws has had the exact opposite effect - by allowing drivers and pedestrians to make all of their own decisions about what's safe, one stretch of road that used to see 45 accidents a year and traffic jams, has become smooth and safe, and drivers have slowed down overall.

The plan is called "Share Space" and exists in towns in England and Holland as well. The idea is that everyone on the road including pedestrians and cyclists have equal rights - no sidewalks even! Local police say that without rules, people - wait for it - think for themselves (!) and communicate more and assume the responsibility of powering a huge pile of metal. Though locals say it took a bit to get used to the freedom and responsibility, it's increased safety and renewed a village-y atmosphere.

Does it make sense that by removing laws intended to increase safety, lawlessness actually makes a bigger difference? Could this phenomenon apply to other places and types of laws as well? Should it?

Removing All Traffic Laws Makes Town Safer! Make Sense?

Yes! Laws become a stand-in for personal responsibility. We need more of the latter.

It's dicey. I think both laws and responsibility need to coexist equally to make both work.

Stop sign here! Without laws, there's no enforcement or standard of safety. Big mistake.

Other. I've got my turn signal on and I'll tell you in the comments.
