Most novice drivers are a nervous mess before buckling in and taking the dreaded driving exam, but not this punk. He was busy installing hidden cameras into the dashboard. A new California cell-phone law will prohibit driving and mobile talking come July - so over-the-phone convos are technically still legal. This dude wanted to push the envelope and see if he could take his calls and pass the driving test, too. Five failed exams later . . .

This "public improvement film" is a sketch from a comedy show, so we can't take it too seriously. Although it's mocking men's attitudes from the past, some dudes still have the same attitude now. To them I say: Watch your back when crossing the street, as my "pretty little mind" might not think to hit the brakes fast enough. Oopsy-daisy!

Creative Parking Takes A Turn For The Worst

We've seen parallel parking troubles before, but in that instance, after four whole minutes of trying and re-trying to park the car, the driver eventually gave up and drove away. Unfortunately, the person in the following video didn't have such good sense. To make matters worse, after settling into a less than parallel parking position, they also forgot to put the gear in park.

Prince Harry Moves Fast - Under Investigation For Speeding

Britain's Prince Harry is a speedy operator. . . or at least he travels with them. In the UK, police are answering to claims that a car carrying Prince Harry (to London nightspot Boujis - clearly a royal emergency) was being driven in a speedy and reckless manner.

The police received a complaint on Wednesday from a driver who claimed he was tailgated by a royal convoy and forced to drive at dangerous speeds to get out of the way.

Allegedly, the princely Audi sped along at more than 100 mph and tried to pass the complaining driver in the outside lane after the Prince's car zoomed up behind with headlights flashing. The driver says, “It was very close. I thought they were going to nudge me. It was frightening. The middle lane was busy so I couldn’t pull back in. I had no option but to accelerate, forcing me well over the 70 mph speed limit to speeds I was uncomfortable with.”

Oh, Harry. Is this probably just a princely prank - or cause for concern? In other Harry news, the prince introduced his girlfriend, Chelsy Davy, to his grandmother - the Queen - at a wedding over the weekend. Now that would be an introduction to get your heart racing.

VA Tech: Today marks the one-year anniversary of the shootings at Virginia Tech. The tragic event was the most deadly shooting spree in modern US history, when 23-year-old student Cho Seung-hui shot 27 students and five staff members before killing himself. The day will be marked with ceremonies and remembrance.
Iraqi Deserters: A company of Iraqi soldiers abandoned their positions last night in Sadr City, defying American soldiers commanding them to hold the line against Shiite militias. A US company commander in the 25th Infantry Division confronted the Iraqi major who was leading his troops away from the Sadr City fight, saying, “if you turn around and go back up the street those soldiers will follow you. If you tuck tail and cowardly run away they will follow up that way, too.” The desertion by the 50 Iraqi soldiers left a large and important stretch of frontline road undefended.

CO Fires: Wildfires raged over 11 square miles in Colorado last night, forcing hundreds to evacuate and leaving three dead. The three fires broke out following a dry March, and Gov. Bill Ritter has declared a state of emergency, freeing up state resources to help fight the fires.
India Bus Crash: In India at least 44 people have been killed after their bus plunged into a river. Most of the dead are children as the bus had been transporting students to an exam. Four children have been rescued from the wreckage. Road accidents in India claim thousands of lives every year, and most are blamed on reckless driving and poorly maintained roads.

Fear Of Highway Driving

Dear Sugar,
I have a fear of being on the highway even when I am not the one who is driving the car. I trust my friends and family, but I am scared of the other drivers on the road. I can't seem to shake the feeling that we could get into a horrible accident and die. I make myself sick when I think about getting onto a highway or a freeway. I sweat and my hands clam up. Dear Back Road Bettina,
Think of the facts. Only 4% of serious or fatal accidents occur on interstates nationwide. These are the safest roads in the nation.

Only about 1.48% (for every 100 million vehicle miles travelled) get into fatal accidents. This is a statistic from 2003 when this was a particularly HIGH year for highway deaths. Out of those fatalities, 40% were alcohol related. What this information tells you is that this is a very low percentage.

So now that you understand the facts, you should feel much calmer knowing that the likelihood of you getting into an accident on a highway is slim. Here are some things that you can do to make yourself feel even more comfortable.

Do your best to drive in safe conditions. It is more common for accidents to occur during rain and snow so try and stay off of the highways during bad weather.
Always wear your seat belt. More than half (56%) of people who are killed on the road were not using seat belts.
If possible, try not to look at the road when you are in the car. Be the DJ, read, or do something to distract yourself when you are the passenger.
Make sure the driver isn't driving recklessly or doing something to sidetrack them from focusing on the road (i.e. putting on make-up or talking on their cell phone).
Ask the driver not to speed, not to switch lanes and to please stay in the right lane where cars drive more slowly. This way if you are panicked, you can take the next exit and get off of the highway more quickly.
