Reality TV Gives Us More to Love and More to Question

This Summer, 20 "real" women (I guess that settles the debate about what to call women over the size of 12) will have a chance to find their love stories on Fox's reality show More to Love. Based on the new promo, the female contestants feel that their size has kept them from finding true love and they're turning to reality TV to change that.

The dating show will feature "a single and eligible man with a big waist and an even bigger heart as he romances several confident and secure plus-size women." Confident and secure sounds great, but these clips of the women crying about ending up alone because of their size reveals that the show is ready to explore (and maybe exploit?) some of these women's insecurities, too. Would we expect anything different from reality TV?

I guess I'll hold out hope that the show will be tasteful, but I doubt it will be groundbreaking. If networks were really concerned about raising acceptance for all sizes, producers would simply include people of all sizes on regular dating shows!

Does Reality TV Hate Women?

Writer Raina Kelley makes the point in Newsweek this week that reality shows must go out of their way to dig up women that fit practically every negative female stereotype. She writes:

Thanks to this ridiculous programming, sexists everywhere can make a cogent case that women are weak, shallow, vain, stupid, gold-digging, desperate delusional bitches. . . . For every 21-year-old knucklehead screaming because she wants faux ostrich feathers for her wedding centerpieces, I can put a million sane brides on the stand who somehow managed to get married without making fools of themselves.

While I'd have to search long and hard for a female reality star I'd want to represent my gender, I must call Raina out on something: male reality stars look pretty bad too! For every woman competing for the bachelor, there's a man trying way too hard for the bachelorette. For every Heidi, there's a Spencer.

In the war between the sexes, I'm not sure who wins the battle for looking worse on reality TV.

If you wanted any sign that pop culture is fragmented and random, look no further than VH1's Daisy of Love. In order to even begin to fathom what this show is about, you have to be prepared to jump down the rabbit hole of reality television with me. Here goes. It stars Daisy de la Hoya - the runner up of Rock of Love 2. Not the winner, and not the first Rock of Love. And it's a dating show.

Daisy of Love premiered in April. I have missed out, but at the urging of obsessed fans, I've taken a look. Wow, uh, who dresses these people, where did they come from, and are they the result of an airborne toxic event? They're like mutant strains of douchebags, the chode version of C.H.U.D. (Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dweller) - C.H.O.D.E.

Anyway, in this clip, Daisy gives nicknames to the contestants, and there's also a man in a thong doing flips. Enjoy!

10 Things I Learned From Watching the Bachelorette

Having seen The Bachelor more seasons than I care to admit, I will say that having a bevy of women vying for your attention looks more fun for the man than 25 30 men vying for a woman's attention. (Here are the guys.) Watching Jillian walk into a room full of boozed-up bachelors wanting to talk to her made me uncomfortable for her. No wonder she was sucking down those Chardonnays.
It's hard to break-dance in a white, form-fitting, charmeuse gown.
Some men really, really identify with their jobs. (Pilot dude, I'm talking to you.)
Being sincere and yourself (Kiptyn, Ed) is so much more attractive than acting a part (Juan, Kyle.)
Sadly, sometimes being sincere isn't enough (sorry, Adam).

It's true - funny often trumps hunky. (Break-dancer guy over square-jawed, humorless bohunks.)
Having a man you don't know sing you a love song he wrote for you is . . . weird not romantic.
I now know that if a man asks you to take your shoes off within moments of meeting you and can't make eye contact with you, but also isn't looking at your chest but rather stealing furtive glances down to your feet, he probably has a foot fetish.
Men have some odd names these days. (Mathue. Kiptyn. Two Tanners - Tanner P. and Tanner F.? Really?)
There's not enough money in the world you could give me to be on a reality-dating show.

MTV's Is She Really Going Out With Him?

Chodes, douchebags, tools - call them what you will, but for some reason, there's always a gaggle of women willing to date them and put up with their crap. That's what the creator of the amazing site Hot Chicks With Douchebags and - coming this Summer - MTV's Is She Really Going Out With Him? reality show found out the hard way. (Jay Louis explains in an interview that shortly after a breakup, his ex started dating a total tool.) Watch this awesome trailer for the new show and wait for my new favorite quote: "Every gangster needs a flatiron."

Though she may not have won our favorite female comedian poll, Margaret Cho has many moments of brilliance. And judging by this extended trailer for The Cho Show (premiering Aug. 21 on VH1), her new reality series is full of 'em.

I particularly love the bit about her mom's distaste for tattoos - unless it's tattooed makeup, of course - and the encounter with Gary Busey. Check out the vid and tell me: Are you excited for The Cho Show?

The Paper is one of the new shows in MTV's teenybopper reality show lineup. I initially thought the program would serve as an enticing way to get young peeps enthused about a nonathletic, extracurricular activity - one that promotes civic awareness, community involvement, and writing proficiency. I should have known better. The show mainly focuses on the quirkiness of the paper's editor in chief and how nearly everyone under her can't stand her, constantly undermine her, and want to overthrow her. The value of teamwork? Oh, that's been edited out, natch.
