If the idiocy pundits are spewing on television is any indication, the political discourse around the upcoming election is pretty low on substance. The Daily Show's Jon Stewart mocks one dude's critique of Obama (based on what proof, we'll probably never know) that he - gasp! - eats arugula. Amazingly, Jon's mockery includes the word "bacon" and the phrase "the anus of an American bald eagle" in the same sentence. Now that takes genius. . .

Extra, extra! The AOL TV Host Poll results just came in. And the winning couple is . . . Elisabeth Hasselbeck and Larry King! So, what did they win?

Well, the honors were a little dubious. The View's Elisabeth was voted the "Worst Interviewer" and Larry of the omnipresent suspenders and weird slouchy hunch was voted "Least Sexy Host." Odd.

And the big question as to which TV host would also make the best President? Readers chose Diane Sawyer. Hmm. . . President Sawyer. Do you agree?

Sotomayor's talked about how her experiences will contribute to her decisions, informing them in the way that all of our experiences, as the sum total of who we are, inform our actions.

In one instance, a pundit posits a ridiculous example to illustrate the danger of having a Latina on the Supreme Court. What if, he says, an Asian-American employee sues his Latina employer, and Sotomayor presides over the case and rules for the Latina? He seems not to consider that she might do that based on the facts of the case alone! So what's his point, that no people of color should be on the court ever because they'll only rule for "their own kind"?

Seriously. Let's shift the question and address the elephant in the room. What about the predominantly white Supreme Court? How does being white affect how they make decisions? What exactly does whiteness connote, if not the standard which all other people must measure up or answer to?

What Did the Pundits Get So Very, Very Wrong?

God bless 24-hours of news for giving us the "something happened, here's a boatload of people to tell you how to think about it" model of reporting. After all, where would we be without pundits? Thinking for ourselves? Well that clearly just won't do at all. So what happens when what we've been told by the experts turns out to be a little, uh, wrong? Salon rounded up a list of "bum calls" from pundits this election. Here are a few:

Everybody Loves Sarah: For a while there in August everything was coming up Palin - leading the heads to speculate she was a masterful pick that was going to snare the Hillary voters and make a big splash with feminists. Polls out this week however show that 60 percent of women under 50 have negative feelings about her.
Steve Schmidt Rules: After McCain topped the polls following the convention, the world beat a path to strategist Steve Schmidt's door. But with the decision to suspend the campaign and focus on the day to day rather than building a brand, the strategy seems to be coming up shorter than expected

Obama Should Have Taken His Allowance: When Obama turned down the federal funding and his money stalled a bit after the conventions, the heads saw blood. Clearly he was too big for his britches. Though his record fundraising month of September proved that wrong.
The Hillary Fans Are Done For: The pundits sure thought the vocal Hillary supporters would never come around to Obama and he'd blown it by not picking her. But with new numbers showing Obama beating McCain with a 91 to 5 percent margin among Democrats it seems like there were 18 million cracks in their crystal balls.

Play Pundit: Does Georgia Conflict Help Obama or McCain?

During the presidential campaign season, it seems like almost everything could have an impact on the election. While leaders assess the long-term impact of the conflict in Georgia, pundits want to know right now how the complex event will impact the election in November. So far, the media has chalked up Russia's aggression as an advantage for John McCain.

McCain has stressed his perceived edge in foreign policy experience, using stronger language against Russia than President Bush, and maintaining that the US must reevaluate relations with Russia. While Obama fully condemned Russia's actions, he also called for restraint from both Russia and Georgia.

As shown in the video above, the media thinks McCain's stiff approach to diplomacy will come out looking better thanks to the conflict in Georgia. Do you agree?

Say What? RNC Has a Kanye Moment

"Michael Steele had a Kanye West moment coming out there and saying Beyonce should have gotten the award. He shouldn't have done that."

- Conservative pundit Pat Buchanan said yesterday that RNC chair Michael Steele had a Kanye West moment when he came out early against President Obama's Nobel Peace Prize. Steele said that the prize should have gone to those people who have made "real achievements working towards peace and human rights."

Pundit Asks: When Will Obama Go to Church?

Easter's coming up this Sunday, everybody, which has some people asking - hey, why hasn't President Obama gone to church? Questions about unemployment, Iraq, or his latest trip overseas may seem more impending, but this is America, and people want to know why Obama hasn't been praying in public on Sundays.

Writing on Fox News, commentator Bill Sammon points out that Obama promised last May to choose a new house of worship in January, since his membership at Jeremiah Wright's Trinity United didn't really work out for him. Sammon writes:

But the president made no decision in January, February or March. And now, with Easter just days away, Obama has yet to reveal what church he may have chosen or when he might attend his first Sunday services as president.

I'm sure there's a bunch going on here, like a busy schedule (which includes trips to Middle Eastern mosques), and taking time to choose which church he'd like to bestow his security detail on. That being said, other presidents have made time to hit services. Maybe Obama's reluctant to go to church simply as a PR move?

Playing Pundit: Is McCain's Poll Momentum Bounce or Trend?

John McCain has seen a significant popularity surge in the polls, erasing Obama's lead. According to the latest ABC/Washington Post poll, which has McCain over Obama by two points among likely voters, before McCain tapped Palin Obama had an eight-point advantage among white women. McCain now leads that group by 12 points. The poll also shows a 26-point swing for McCain in the crucial Midwest.

Gallup's latest poll shows that Independents currently prefer McCain by a 12-point difference. As for the electoral college, Rassmussen has Obama ahead 193 to 183, compared to his previous advantage of 210 to 165. As for one poll that doesn't really matter, the latest BBC poll shows that the rest of the world wants Obama to win.

Today Obama told supporters to hold off on panicking over the same polls that had him down 20 last summer. He said: "When people start looking at who's going to deliver on things people care about. . . . Ultimately those are the issues that are going to make the biggest difference in this race."

There's still a long way to go till November, but what do you make of the latest polls?
