A dude has to be darn confident that she'll say "yes" in order to pop the question during a televised basketball game, in front of a packed stadium and millions of viewers at home. But Romeo here had it wrong. Our gal wasn't ready. She didn't even have the courtesy to take the ring and at least pretend to say "yes" for all the cheering fans in the stands. Could someone please get homeboy on bended knee a beer? And a Snickers bar for me.

We've been seeing a lot of Ryan Reynolds lately thanks to his role alongside Sandra Bullock in The Proposal, but I can't seem to make up my mind about the actor's hotness factor. There's no denying that he has pretty features and a buff bod, but something about the Canadian actor doesn't get me hot and bothered. Then again, he does get points with me for playing Billy in the 1990s Nickelodeon teen soap Fifteen. Does Mr. Scarlett Johansson do anything for you?

Dear Sugar,

My boyfriend and I have been having some issues for a few years now. He is not attentive, he is an extreme control freak, and he is very judgmental. I am the complete opposite. I do anything to see people happy, I don't like to feel controlled, and I am the least judgmental person you'll ever meet. This is obviously tearing us apart - we argue five out of seven days of the week.

Recently, I have become increasingly interested in my co-worker. He is amazing, sweet, caring, attentive and funny. He has told me multiple times that he really likes me and would love to take me to dinner. He respects that I have a boyfriend and that I denied his dinner proposal, but in the back of my mind I really want to take him up on his offer. I love my boyfriend, but I am not in love with him at all anymore and I really think that this man can show me the world. What should I do? - Stuck Sophie

Dear Stuck Sophie,

It sounds as though you're mentally checked out of your current relationship, and with good reason, he sounds like an unhealthy partner for you. I'm glad to hear that you haven't accepted your co-worker's advances while in a relationship with someone else, but the fact that you want to is just another indicator that it's time to end things with your boyfriend. Though opposites can attract, it doesn't sound like he is bringing anything positive to the table.

Once you sever ties and grieve your relationship, explore the possibility with this other man, but in the meantime, I don't see why you can't deepen the friendship you're developing. Breaking up is never easy and I know how tough of a position you're in, so the best advice I can give you is to follow your heart and gut instincts. Good luck to you.

Gaza Blast Kills 5: A large explosion in Gaza yesterday killed at least five Palestinians, including several Hamas militants and a baby girl. Despite the death and destruction of a residential building, responsibility is unclear. Hamas, the Islamist group that controls Gaza, first blamed the blast on an Israeli air strike, causing them to fire rockets and mortar rounds at Israeli towns and villages around Gaza. The Israeli military has vehemently denied any involvement in the explosion.

US/Iraq Talks Stall: Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Maliki declared that talks with the US aimed at reaching a long-term agreement allowing US forces to remain in Iraq have "reached an impasse". According to Maliki, the US demands compromised Iraqi sovereignty. President Bush has said he wants an agreement by the end of July, as the UN mandate for US forces to be in Iraq expires at the end of 2008. Maliki said of the proposal, "We cannot allow US forces to have the right to jail Iraqis or assume, alone, the responsibility of fighting against terrorism."
Midwest Pounded: Iowa's Cedar River broke its banks yesterday, forcing the evacuation of thousands of homes and causing a railroad bridge to collapse. Officials estimated that 100 blocks are underwater in Cedar Rapids, where preparations weren't enough to hold back the water. The sheriff said of the weather crisis, "We're just kind of at God's mercy right now, so hopefully people that never prayed before this, it might be a good time to start." Estimates show that 3,200 homes were evacuated and 8,000 residents have been displaced. This news comes after a deadly tornado hit an Iowa Boy Scout camp, and a similarly deadly twister tore through Kansas, leaving residents to dig out of the destruction.

Candidates' Joint Statement Vows Vigilance on Darfur

In a strong and perhaps rare show of unity, all three candidates declared in a joint statement released today by the Save Darfur Coalition, that waiting for the end of the Bush administration will do the Sudanese government no good. McCain, Clinton, and Obama said this:

Today, we wish to make clear to the Sudanese government that on this moral issue of tremendous importance, there is no divide between us. If peace and security for the people of Sudan are not in place when one of us is inaugurated as president on Jan. 20, 2009, we pledge that the next administration will pursue these goals with unstinting resolve.

Though the statement is mostly symbolic - the three are not proposing any specific Congressional action against Sudan, or any tangible steps by the United States to put pressure on the Sudanese government - is it an effective way to send a message to the government of Sudan that the next American president will continue to hold firm on Darfur?

At least 200,000 people have been killed there since the Arab-dominated government of Sudan unleashed tribal militias known as the janjaweed on non-Arab rebel groups and civilians. The Sudanese government says that number is exaggerated and denies that the killing amounts to genocide. Is a joint statement a good omen for the coming campaign? Will it help?
