Remember playing the game "telephone" as a child? You whisper something to the person next to you who whispers it to the person next to them, and then by the time it reached the last person, the message was totally distorted. Here's an adult version, with an adult outcome.

There's always a risk involved in a marriage proposal — she (or he) could say no! But a person heightens that risk when he decides on a public proposal. Yesterday on Australian national television, a man surprised his girlfriend of three years and proposed to her on stage.

Talk about getting inside a woman's head. As a sippy-cup-clutching toddler looks on, Aaron Weisinger, 26, proposes to his girlfriend Erica Breder inside the Statue of Liberty's crown. Though the rest of the monument reopened in 2004, July 4 was the first time since Sept.

Getting engaged is a very special right of passage between two people who love each other, and choosing where to take that next step in your relationship is something that usually takes a lot of thought and planning. When the time comes for me to get engaged, I'd want my boyfriend to ask me someplace private so we can share that intimate moment together, just the two of us, but I know that some women really enjoy a more public profession of love. No one way is better than the other, so tell me, do you think public proposals are a do or a don't?

Last week on the Ellen DeGeneres Show, a guy in the audience showed off his talents by juggling three hammers. Ellen wasn't that impressed so she asked if he had anything else up his sleeve, and lo and behold, he did! He proceeded to run up to his girlfriend in the audience, then he whipped out a diamond ring, got down on one knee — in front of everyone — and asked, "Will you marry me?"

Once many years ago, I witnessed a proposal in a restaurant. At the time, I thought it was the most romantic way to pop the question, but as I grew older, my opinion changed. I would personally rather have that moment in my life be a private one, and as it turns out, restaurateurs feel the same way.

I’ve always thought that when a man knows he wants to propose to his lady, he should ask for her parents' permission. Now I know it’s a tad old-fashioned, but I think what I like about it is the idea that he’s taken the time to contact her family and let them in on this momentous occasion so they can be a part of it from the very beginning.
But every family is different, and I know that there are some people who don’t have a relationship with their parents that would call for such formality.

In the 1956 film Indestructible Man, boyfriend wants the gal to marry him, but he doesn't bother asking her to be his wife. He jumps to his own conclusions instead and — badda bing, badda boom — gets the ball rolling from there. And by "rolling," I mean he stops her career aspirations dead in their tracks without permission.
