Gay Iranian May Escape Execution

The UK granted a temporary reprieve from deportation to a gay Iranian teen, while they review his previously rejected asylum application. Mehdi Kazemigot, claims he will be executed upon return to Iran. While in England studying English, Mehdi got the word that his boyfriend had been hanged back home on account of his homosexuality. Before being executed, his boyfriend named Mehdi as his partner.

Since 1979, 4,000 gay and lesbian Iranians have been executed. Last year, while speaking at Columbia University, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad sparked laughter, and outrage, when he pronounced that Iran does not have the homosexual "phenomenon."

Today's "cooked" elections, which excluded all reform candidates, will yield little change in Iran. Do you think countries like England have an obligation to act as a safe haven for people like Mehdi?

The Daily Show ~~faux~~ reporter Jason Jones has traded in his green screen for the backdrop of election-time Iran. Footage recorded by the curly-haired hottie recorded for 10 days in late May and early June will air next week. For the segment called "Jason Jones in Iran: Access of Evil," not only did Jones attend a speech by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, he also interviewed an underground rapper and a feminist blogger.

Some little known facts about the adventurous Jason? He grew up in Canada, minored in botany in college, and is married to fellow Daily Show correspondent Samantha Bee. (We can forget that fact for our purposes).

Iran Marks 30th Anniversary of Islamic Revolution

Yesterday Iranians celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Islamic Revolution. In February 1979, Iran transformed from a constitutional monarch under the Shah, to an Islamic republic under the Ayatollah. Celebrating the realization of Islam's political potential, thousands of Iranians gathered in Freedom Square yesterday. Most of them were working class citizens, who strongly support President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Many middle-class people feel they were better off before the revolution. Ahmadinejad used the anniversary of the event, which ended warm relations between Iran and the US, to make an overture to President Obama. He said Iran was ready for "talks based on mutual respect and in a fair atmosphere." Not surprisingly, Ahmadinejad used the moment to attack Bush calling for him to be "tried and punished" for his actions in the Middle East. Check out these pictures from the mass rally. Source

Do You Think US Relations With Iran Will Improve?

When asked recently about the impending presidency of Barack Obama, Iranian President and Bush foe Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said that he thinks Obama can change US-Iran relations, and that he will be patient to see what Obama does. Still, Ahmadinejad maintained that if Barack acts like Bush, just "in a new package" the tension will continue.

For starters, Ahmadinejad thinks Obama should focus on what happens at home. He maintained:

The US allows itself to intervene in the affairs of all countries in the world. It should limit its intervention to its own borders.

Obama has made it clear that he wants to engage Iran, and not bully them. Still, international pressure hasn't worked well in getting Iran to abandon uranium enrichment. Do you think Iran will come around under Obama?
