In a funny and kind of sad essay, a writer on Salon discusses how sex with men who watch porn (or maybe she means too much porn) can sometimes make her feel like she's starring in a private porno against her will. The moves are too rehearsed, too cheesy, too porn-y. "It’s hard to feel fully in the moment," she writes, "when you’re thinking of what it would be like to watch it."

For some women, porn and its influence can make sex more varied and exciting, but for others, it may feel like their partners are just busting out moves they've seen in a porn film that do nothing at all for them. If you're sleeping with a man who is copying porn moves, what's the one you wish he'd stop doing?

Plotless Porn Wins the Day

I’m not a big porn-watcher, but if I did watch porn, I wouldn’t watch it for the plot. (I’m kinda like a dude that way.)

Well, it turns out if I started watching porn now, I’d be in luck. The pendulum has swung back to plotless porn, in part due to competition from the Internet, where porn scenes are short, relatively plotless and dialogueless, and which cut to the action more quickly. “On the Internet, the average attention span is three to five minutes,” said Steven Hirsch, co-chairman of Vivid Entertainment. “We have to cater to that.”

In the ‘70s, during the so-called golden age of porn, when actresses still had pubic hair and actors sported porn ‘staches, movies like Behind the Green Door were practically feature films - only with lots of sex. Then cheap, hand-held video cameras ushered in a generation of pornographers who bypassed plot so that the leading lady could quickly get down and dirty with the pool boy. Plot rolled back into porn the ‘90s with the popularity of DVDs. Big studios, said Paul Fishbein of AVN Media Network, wanted to appeal to women, hoping that couples would watch the films at home.

But we’re back again to plotless porn. What’s replaced plot? Themes, like New Sensations’ Girls ‘n Glasses, which stitches together scenes of women having sex in their glasses. Porn actress Savanna Samson laments the falling away of plot. “I used to have dialogue,” she said, and used to get excited about scripts. “Getting it on in one hardcore scene after another," she continues, "just isn’t as much fun."

So here’s a question - if you watch porn, do you prefer yours with a plot or plotless?

This may be a conservative estimate, but I reckon 99.9% of men buy or view porn. Maybe some of them are completely open about it, but most guys could live without having their mom or third grade teacher catching them purchasing Tongue in Cheeks at the corner market. Which brings me to this amazing Bud Light commercial featuring what would have to be the shy porn buyer's worst nightmare. (It reminds me of a scene in Little Miss Sunshine.)

Would You Ever Buy a Magazine With Photos of Nude Men?

As we all know, pornographic magazines, movies and websites cater, for the most part, to men. We hear all the time that men are visual creatures, while women are romance junkies. (Someone once argued that romance novels were a woman's pornography.) Although women aren't quite as easily stimulated by visual material as men, some women do like porn - not all of it soft core. But no mainstream nudie mag, comparable to Playboy, exists for women.

Filament, an erotic magazine for women launching this month, bills itself as "a new concept in magazines for women: intelligence, inspiration and images of men designed for the female gaze." Sorry, Filament, this doesn't sound promising to me. To find out why, read more

First off, there's something too fussy about it. The "female gaze" is an offshoot of "the male gaze," a feminist film theory term that describes the way in which Hollywood films make the male protagonist the subject of most films, mainly through making women the object of their gaze. It also describes the general culture of men's objectification of women. The idea of creating a magazine that will turn women on built on this overly theoretical premise already has my libido wilting. And according to one reviewer, the images of the men in odd poses are anything but sexy.

I wonder if the reason there aren't any mainstream erotic magazines for women is mostly because no one's hit on the right formula. (Playgirl, which was around for 35 years, doesn't count according to some because it was really for gay men.) I once bought the short-lived, straight-outta-Brooklyn porno mag for women Sweet Action, filled with naked pics of skinny, tattooed hipster boys. It was interesting, and I loved the photography, but it didn't do anything for me.

Would you ever buy a magazine with erotic or pornographic photos of men? If so, what, ideally, would the men and the images look like?

Bailouts Gone Wild: Porn Industry Asks Congress For $5 Billion

The porn industry is hurting! With less money to waste, Americans are being forced to look at free Internet porn or seek meaningful relationships. And now, porn industry bigwigs have asked Congress for the same ride given to car manufacturers.

If they're going to make this work, Hustler magazine founder Larry Flynt and porn mogul Joe Francis really need to get their stories straight. Francis sees the bailout as necessary to meet the increasing demand for porn. He said, "In difficult economic times, Americans turn to entertainment for relief. More and more, the kind of entertainment they turn to is adult entertainment."

Yet Flynt believes it's necessary to stimulate (sorry!) America's sexual appetite. "With all this economic misery and people losing money, sex is the farthest thing from their mind."

Rest assured, bailout or no bailout, the industry is not at risk of collapsing. "But as long as the government is handing out money," Francis said, "we want to be there to take it."

Meanwhile, they await Congress's response.

Group Therapy: He's Into Questionable Porn

I have a friend that had a baby 15 months ago and being so involved during her pregnancy and after her baby girl arrived, naturally I was named godmother. Recently my friend came to me to talk about her fiancé, the father of the baby. We all know that he dabbles in online porn, but after repeated requests for him to stop my friend finally gave up, figuring that online porn really isn't so terrible.

They currently have no Internet at home so he's been using her cell phone to get online. Upon checking the browsing history, she's found he's back to the porn surfing again. But the problem is the type of porn he's looking at. He's now checking out family incest porn and it's raised a flag to my friend. She asked me if she should be worried and what should she do. I, being a mom, immediately said get that baby and go. But she doesn't want to, so I told her to talk to him about it. When she did, he acted as if what he was doing was nothing. I recently learned that he has had a family history of incest too. What do I tell my friend to do next?

I'm usually OK with porn. I watch it myself and have watched it with former boyfriends however, my current boyfriend has always refused to let me watch his porn with him, and recently I learned why. The porn he watches is full of incredibly disturbing sado-masochistic porn, which I had no idea he was even slightly into. We've been together for almost two years! When it comes to a couple's sex life, I think communication should always be open, honest, and direct so don't turn this into a secret you carry around or a beat around the bush conversation. Just let him know that you're aware of the particular kind of porn that he's into, and while you don't want him to stop watching it, you'd like to learn more about it. Ask him gentle questions, and avoid any kind of statements that might imply that you think something is wrong with him - if he's been trying to hide this from you, he's probably scared of being judged.

There are many misconceptions about S&M so don't let the stereotypes many of us inevitably carry around steer the conversation; instead, just hear what he has to say. Together you might want to determine how this particular sexual interest will or will not play a role in your own bedroom. And no matter what, know that it's OK if you don't feel comfortable with participating in such sexual play. Now that you've learned about his fantasies, it may take some time to adjust to, so be patient with him and yourself.
