Pictures of the Day: Air Force Reservists Come Home

The new plan for US withdrawal from Iraq would have US troops out within three years, with withdrawals set to begin next Summer if it's agreed upon. But, these troops had their big homecoming this week.

Troops from the Homestead Air Reserve Base returned to Miami after a six-month deployment to Iraq. The reservists' mission was to provide security at Kirkuk airbase. Judging from the pictures, their loved ones are so glad to have them back.

Look What's on the Preservation List of 11 Endangered Places

The National Trust for Historic Preservation just released a list of 11 endangered sites chosen from almost 70 nominees. The list's goal is to protect significant buildings and locations. Of the approximately 200 places listed by the organization in the past 20 years, only six have been lost. The head of the Trust says, "The 11 represent the different kinds of historic places in different parts of the country. It's a representative list." Take a peek at where they're trying to save.

Boyd Theater, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
California's park system (made the list because of $1.2 billion worth of deferred maintenance.)
Charity Hospital and adjacent neighborhood, New Orleans, Louisiana
Great Falls Portage, Great Falls, Montana
Hangar One, Moffett Field, Santa Clara County, California
Lower East Side, New York (once home to immigrants and the working class in the 19th and early 20th centuries - gentrification and development threatens historic churches, theaters, schools and tenements.)

The Statler Hilton Hotel, Dallas, Texas

Picture It: The Polytheistic Kalash Tribe of Pakistan

When I ran across these jaw-droppingly striking pictures, I couldn't believe I'd never heard of the Kalash Tribe - and I wanted to rectify that immediately. The tribe lives nestled in the North-Western Province of Pakistan. Protected by the Hindu Kush mountain range lives this culture of people Muslims call Kafirs or “infidels”.

Among the region known as Kafiristan lies the town of Brir, considered one of the last remaining settlements of the Kalash - or “wearers of black." Its inhabitants consider themselves the direct descendants of Alexander the Great. The 3,500 souls are the last enclave of pagan tribespeople.

Incredibly, the Kalash have not changed much over the centuries. They make their own wine, elevate animals to religious status and believe in mountaintop fairies. To find out more about the tribe, read more.

Their gods, like those of the ancient Greeks, are split up into male and female deities and they claim they once belonged to highly literate culture until their books were burned by barbarian tribes. Shown in these pictures celebrating their annual Spring festival, the Kalash still maintain a fertility rite where a teenage boy is sent alone into the surrounding woods for a year and when he returns is treated to a feast and the mating rites to as many of the Kalash women he chooses.

They struggle to preserve their identity from encroaching Islamic rule, deforestation, and entrepreneurs who take advantage of their simple natures - as well as the assault of the Justin Timberlake/cell phone/jeans avalanche of the modern world. Here's to hoping they resist - I'm so taken with the fact that real diversity still exists in our ever-shrinking world.

Pictures Tell the Story in Myanmar, Life After the Cyclone

Pictures are starting to come out of Myanmar following the cyclone though media is discouraged. One CNN reporter remaining anonymous says, "They have no drinking water whatsoever. When you don't have drinking water and you are forced to drink out of puddles and drinking reservoirs contaminated by dead bodies... It is a very dire situation."

Aid has started to trickle in though UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon has spoken harshly to the junta. He says it's time to "put its people's lives first. This is not about politics. It is about saving people's lives. There is absolutely no more time to lose."

For the raver who celebrates Easter! Sure, Katie Sugar looked longingly at this candy when I walked by, but this toy (for ages five and up) isn't designed for paci-aged kids.

Perhaps this light-up lollipop/pacifier has the best intentions, but I can't shake my mental image of some clubber kid whiling away his Sunday ecstasy roll by sucking on the Easter bunny's head.

Party Like a Pilgrim! Pictures From Catholic World Youth Day

If you were wondering what the Pope was doing driving around Sydney in the Pope mobile, his Holiness is in town for World Youth Day. The world's largest youth event, organized by the Catholic Church, has brought almost 125,000 international visitors to Sydney, more than the 2000 Olympics!

Every two or three years the Pope invites young pilgrims to celebrate their faith's international counterparts. Pope John Paul II started the event in 1984. This year the celebration being held in Sydney, Australia, from July 15 to July 20, includes an opening mass, catechesis (teaching) sessions, and a pilgrim dance party. One Vietnamese pilgrim said: It's like a big family, the Church gets to see how people from all over the world live their faith and it is interesting to see and it is inspiring to me."

From the look of these pictures, this "promotional event" seems like it gets young people excited about the Church. But, some Australians see the event as "propaganda" and are protesting the event, which received some public funding. A MySpace survey of Australian youth found that 77 percent of respondents felt the Catholic Church was "out of touch" with youth. Does this event help it get in touch?
