Do You Prefer Sex With a Circumcised or Uncircumcised Man?

There's been a big push in Africa to get men circumcised in order to reduce their risk of contracting HIV. A recent study dedicated to evaluating the health benefits of male circumcision in Uganda decided to go further and see how the practice impacted a patient's sex life. The results show that 40 percent of women said that they had more satisfying sex after their partner was circumcised. (Note: 57 percent reported no change and three percent said sex was less satisfying.)

Women credited a variety of factors for their increase in pleasure, including improved hygiene, a longer period before their partner climaxed, and an increased sex drive from their partner.

I've heard anecdotal evidence to support a wide range of opinions on the topic. Some women say sex is much better when a man is au naturel, while others are turned off by the foreskin. And some women I know don't have an opinion either way. What about you?

What's Up With Curvature of the Penis?

Just as all women's breasts look different, men's private parts can differ too. Some are longer, shorter, thicker, or thinner. Some even curve. Since the penis is made of muscles, if certain ones are stronger than the others, it will cause a slight bend known as congenital curvature. A slight curve is normal and fairly common, and there's really nothing wrong or anything the guy should do, unless he feels pain during an erection or sexual activity. Actually some women prefer the curve, especially if it's bent upward since it can stimulate her G-spot better.

If the curve makes sex a discomforting challenge, then the guy may have a condition known as Peyronie’s disease. This disease usually develops in males between the ages of 40 and 60, but can happen at any time. The symptoms may appear suddenly or slowly, and vary in severity. Peyronie’s occurs in about one to four percent of the male population, and doctors aren't yet sure what causes this condition, though possibilities include injury, infection, or a vitamin E deficiency. If this sounds familiar, even though it may be embarrassing to address, it's best for the guy to see a urologist. They can help diagnose the problem and offer treatment so the man can get back to enjoying sex again.

You've learned about Hypospadias and Peyronie's disease and to close out this series, I'm going to talk about Balanitis. Balanitis is a fancy word for an inflammation on the head of the penis, and symptoms include redness or swelling, itching, rash, pain, and a foul-smelling discharge. Balanitis is prevalent with uncircumcised men and usually comes to fruition when men have poor hygiene. If dead skin, sweat, debris, and bacteria isn't properly cleaned, it can collect under the foreskin and cause inflammation and dermatitis. While a good cleaning can cure Balanitis, oral antibiotics or antifungal medication may be required. Again, this is not a life-threatening problem, but it can be painful and irritating.

Three Common Penile Problems, Part II

Yesterday you learned about Peyronie's disease, one of three common penile problems that some men have to deal with, but today I'm going to talk about Hypospadias. This condition is when the urinary meatus, the hole on the penis where urine and ejaculate pass, is abnormally positioned. It's usually just short of the tip of the penis but can be as extreme as being positioned underneath the penis or as far back as the scrotum. Hypospadias is actually fairly common, affecting approximately 1 in every 300 newborn boys (this condition is present at birth) so if you want to learn more about it, just read more.

The only way to treat this condition is to have surgery to reposition the urethral opening, and if need be, straighten out the penis. In most cases, the surgery is successful and results in normal or near-normal function and appearance with no future problems, although it is possible for a meatus to form under the penis where the new urinary channel was created, which can cause leakage. If that were to occur, another surgery would be necessary. Although this condition isn't life threatening, it can most definitely be an emotional burden.

We all know that men have a very serious connection with their penis, and just because it can be a source of great pleasure, according to AskMen.com, it can be a source of considerable anxiety as well. Peyronie's disease is really just a fancy name for a crooked penis. While it can also present itself as a bump or thickening area, it's most commonly a curvature.

Symptoms include a lump or thickening along the shaft, a bent appearance, a painful erection, an inability to maintain an erection, or the inability to penetrate during sexual intercourse. While the cause of Peyronie's disease is still unknown, some experts believe it's caused by an excess of scar tissue due to an earlier injury (hitting or bending of the penis).

Though Peyronie's disease most often doesn't require treatment (it can go away on its own), vitamin E, injected steroids, or anti-inflammatory drugs can help treat pain and improve sexual function. In severe cases, surgery is considered in order to remove scar tissue or to shorten the unaffected side of the penis.

You Asked: I Can't Tell if He's Kidding!

Dear Sugar,

I recently met this guy who seems too good to be true. He's extremely attractive, exactly my type, intelligent, funny and single! We have been on a few dates but have only kissed. Everything seems to be going well, but one thing has been confusing/bothering me. Since one of our first dates, he has been making jokes and comments regarding having a small penis. I asked my friends about it and they figured he was just saying that because it is in fact big, and he wants to make me curious. He made another comment yesterday (probably his fifth) and I just couldn't take it anymore. I questioned him as to why he keeps talking about his small penis and asked if this was a normal joke topic among guys. He told me it wasn't a joke, it was in fact the truth. He said he'd rather I know now, before we have sex (which may happen in the near future) so I'm not surprised.

This attitude is confusing and totally unattractive. I don't know what to think - I've never dealt with a man with a small penis before and definitely not the insecurities that come along with it. I don't know how to react to his jokes, which continued immediately following our "talk." Dear Perplexed Pam,

To be honest, I'm just as confused as you are! Since you're still in the getting-to-know-you phase, I would think that he'd be doing his best to show you all his good attributes, not wasting time cutting himself down. If he is in fact small, the only reason I'd think he'd continue to talk about it is that he's trying to lower your expectations so you're not disappointed when your relationship progresses to the next level.

I completely understand that his self-deprecating humor is both confusing and unattractive, so I think another little chat is in order. Tell him that talking about his penis size to soften the blow is actually doing the complete opposite. This is obviously an insecurity you cannot relate to, so keep reassuring him of your feelings and the next time he makes a jab at himself, try to stop him before he has a chance to finish. We all know the old saying, "It's not the size of the boat, it's the motion of the ocean," so hopefully his size, whatever it truly is, won't be an issue when you two finally become intimate.
