Group Therapy: Maid of Honor/Bachelorette Party Pickle

I am having a mini panic attack about my sister's wedding and need some advice. I'm her maid of honor but we don't really get along - the only reason she asked me to be in her wedding is because I'm her only sister. We just had the bridal shower, which was fine except for behind-the-scenes drama with another bridesmaid, but now I'm worrying about the bachelorette party.

I am a teetotaler and will be the only one not drinking at the bachelorette party. Since I'm the MOH, I'm the one who is supposed to plan everything, but I just don't feel comfortable being around alcohol all weekend. My sister and I have a very strained relationship as it is, but I feel like she'd almost have more fun if I wasn't there. Can I back out of the bachelorette party? Would that cause an even bigger rift than we already have? I just don't know what to do!

I caught up on Monday night's episode of The City last night, and I have to say, Jay's late-night antics really made me doubt his trustworthiness. He's currently living with his girlfriend, Whitney, while he looks for a new apartment, and while she's home cozy in bed, he's out being the rock star that he is until the wee hours of the morning, doing who knows what!

I happen to agree with the saying "nothing good happens after midnight" - well, maybe 2 a.m.! - but how would you feel if your significant other was out on the town until, two, three, or four in the morning? Would it be a red flag that he was up to no good, or does the time he comes home have no relevance to you whatsoever?

Handle This: Your Friend Ruined Your Plans

You have a large group of girl friends from college that you still stay in touch with. You've all been talking about getting together for a reunion night, but after months of talk, no one's taken on the responsibility, so you decide to take it upon yourself. You all agree that instead of a big group dinner out, it would be more fun to make it a girls' night in. The problem is your apartment is just too small for that many people. One of your friends has a great place for groups; you ask her if she'd be willing to let you throw it there, and she agrees.

When the weekend of the party arrives, you call your friend to confirm the plans for setting up at her house. But now she tells you that it's not a good time for her, and she's not feeling well. You assure her she doesn't have to do anything, but she refuses. Now you have a 20-person party with no location. How do you handle this?

I love attending work parties. It's always fun to blow off steam with co-workers and see what they're like when they let their hair down. But I always watch myself as drinking too much in the presence of superiors could lead to quite an uncomfortable situation! Luckily, I haven't had to learn the hard way, but I've witnessed people that have and their embarrassment was overwhelming. Of course, no one aims to be a sloppy drunk, but as we all know, accidents happen. So what do you think about partying with your co-workers? Is it a do or a don't?

Dear Sugar,

This weekend I was at a party where a friend of a friend turned up. I’ve never liked him because, well, he’s loud and boorish yet I always try to be polite to him. This time, though, he decided to tell a “hilarious” story that was incredibly racist. I tried to change the subject as soon as I knew where it was going, but he could not be stopped. The party had people from all kinds of backgrounds and races, and he was visibly making people uncomfortable. Finally, I said, “You know, I don’t think this story is funny at all. I find it offensive, actually.” He then turned it around and made a big deal about how I’m allegedly too sensitive. How would you have handled this kind of situation? - I Spoke Up Susi

Dear I Spoke Up Susi,

I have to say, I don't think I would have done much differently! I don't stand for people making racist remarks and it sounds like you feel the same way, so if you ask me, I think you did the right thing! So what if this guy thinks you're sensitive - I'd rather be viewed as too sensitive than a bigot any day. If you still feel like you took the low road, I guess you could have pulled him aside before it got so heated that you blew up in front of others, but the way he was carrying on, it doesn't sound like you had the chance, or you could have walked away, but Susi, shoulda, woulda, coulda! Your emotions got the best of you and I would hope that most everyone at that party shared your views anyway.
