When people think a public audience isn't listening, what do they talk about and what are they saying? Leah Garchik, a popular opinion columnist for The San Francisco Chronicle, includes a tidbit of public eavesdropping in each of her articles. (Woman on cellphone): "Well, because Amy wants to be on the show, and she's afraid she doesn't weigh enough."

Group Therapy: I Overheard Their Fight, Now What?

The other night, while enjoying an ice cold martini and a cigarette, I overheard my neighbors in a vicious argument. Maggie and Carl (names changed to protect the innocent) seemed to have a love triangle that Maggie was not happy with. As the volume increased and the pacing intensified, I felt bad that I was hearing this happen but couldn't stop myself from listening. How does one turn off there sense of hearing? The fight ended with Maggie claiming it's over and slamming the door. As she walked by on the way to her car, our usual hellos were replaced with avoiding eye contact, as she knows I heard everything that was said. How do I avoid the awkwardness in the hallways when we see each other again?

Teen Suspended For Telling Muslim-American to Take Off Hijab

Heather Lawrence, a 16-year-old from Spring Hill, FL, may want to rethink what it means to be a patriotic American.

A junior ROTC member who wants to enlist in the Army next Summer, Lawrence was recently suspended for chastising a fellow student in the halls who was wearing a hijab, saying, “Take that thing off your head and act like you're proud to be an American." She first took offense at the girl when she noticed that she didn’t stand for the pledge of allegiance. Lawrence's parents, outraged that she was suspended for five days, are thinking of taking legal action. (The girl Lawrence confronted didn't complain, but a teacher overheard the remarks and reported her.)

Lawrence’s parents say that it’s Heather’s First Amendment right to “speak her mind,” but Springstead High’s principal sees Heather’s behavior as a of violation the district’s policy against bullying and harassment. According to a school staffer who asked Lawrence why she confronted the student, her harassment seemed to have a prejudicial tinge. "She began to rant,” said the staffer, “that she was enlisting and was going to Iraq and that basically because the girl looks Middle Eastern, that makes her an enemy because all Iraqis are Middle Eastern."

We’ve talked before about how Muslim women wearing hijabs seems to set a lot of people off. As for having to say the pledge of allegiance, last year the US Circuit Court of Appeals struck down a provision in Florida law mandating that people must stand for the pledge.

What do you think of Lawrence’s treatment of the hijab-wearing Muslim-American and her subsequent suspension? When does patriotism go too far?

Where Do You Stand? Using the Term "Preggers"

While in line to get a cup of coffee the other day, I overheard a woman talking on the phone. No, I wasn't eavesdropping - everyone in the cafe heard her shout "You're preggers?!" It was really sweet that she got so excited, but I admit I was a little surprised that she used the term "preggers." Of course I've heard it before, but I didn't realize it was so mainstream. I'm kind of indifferent to the word myself, but I know some people who absolutely loathe it. So tell me, are words like prego, preggers, and preggie too cutesy for your taste?

Do Tell: What Does "Hooking Up" Mean to You?

I overheard some guys talking at a restaurant the other night. One of them was dishing about a girl he "hooked up" with, and he went on to talk about this elaborate sexual experience he had. I was in shock for two reasons: one, that he was speaking in such detail about his sexcapade in a public place, and two, that by "hooking up," he meant sex. I guess where I'm from, that term means you kissed a guy or fooled around a little, but I've never equated it with sex. The notion of hooking up has been in the news a lot lately, so tell me, what does "hooking up" mean to you?

Proof That Stupid Questions Do Exist! You know those people who speak before they think? Well, we got a sampling of them right here:

"What day is New Year's again?"
"How much is that $10 watch?"
"I hate stereotypes. We Canadians don't really talk like that, eh?"
"When I press on my brakes, the car doesn't stop. Do you think this is something I should have fixed?" -- Asked of a worker at an auto repair shop.
"If you record silence on a tape and then play it back with the volume all the way up, will that drown out the noise in the room?" -- Asked by a woman of her boyfriend.
"How do I tell the difference between the big staples and the little staples?" -- Asked of a fellow office worker.
"The Renaissance was during the 1920's, right?" -- Asked of a high school student by another.
"Where do you think water comes from? The SKY?" -- From an overheard argument about water conservation.
"Do you want specific information in general or what?" -- From an overheard conversation between two managers.
"I wasn't able to tape Oprah. Could I possibly come down there and watch it?" -- Asked of a local television station.
"Oh, honey, here's a watch store -- maybe they have it. Do you have any toe rings?"
"How do I get my car fixed?" -- Asked of a health insurance company.
"Isn't it funny how Thanksgiving lands on a Thursday every year?" -- Woman, overheard in a diner.

Day 3: The Big Vote, Clinton, Biden, and Big Obama Surprise!

Want to know the most American I've ever felt? When Hillary released her votes and Nancy Pelosi moved for a vote to make Barack Obama the nominee, and the arena full of citizens erupted into applause and song, moving as one mass of humanity inspired by the sheer force of democracy. It doesn't matter who you're voting for at that point; when you're in the arena, it just matters that you're all voting, and you're proud as hell of that right.

The Pepsi Center tonight was filled with citizens, celebrities, and elected officials packed in together and who are all equal come election day. The deafening roar that greeted Bill Clinton's speech (I overheard this afterward: "Did you hear Bill speak?" "I sure did. He's one-a the best presidents we ever had." Priceless.), then the Spielberg-directed video, John Kerry, the surprisingly touching intro of Joe Biden by his son Beau, culminating in the the firm clear message from vice presidential candidate Biden. When he said, "John McCain is my friend. We've traveled the world together . . . but I profoundly disagree with the direction John wants to take this country, from Afghanistan to Iraq," finishing with, "This is America's time!" the air in the arena was an odd combination of festival and gravity. Excitement over what could be, and the importance and weight of that task. The speech climaxed strongly and left the crowd ready for tomorrow.

THEN! Obama came out onstage!!! What did you make of the surprise? The speeches?
