Flashback: Space Food Sticks

I have no clue why anyone would choose to feed on the chemically enhanced and processed "food" they serve the astronauts in space, but there's obviously a market for it. Space Food Sticks were introduced back in the '60s and, to my surprise, are still available online today. The following commercial claims that these <strike>dog</strike> treats provide "lasting energy to feel alive." In only 44 calories. Which seems totally feasible to me.

Flashback: '70s TV Show Predicts Future Fashion Trends

Tomorrow Today was a UK television program of the '70s that claimed to predict trends and lifestyle habits of the future. And where did the experts foresee fashion going? They had a space-age getup in mind, complete with metallic miniskirts and "specially adapted cosmetics belts" to free us ladies of our bulky purses. How novel! Thirty years later, we can thank our lucky stars that these predictions were all wrong. Really now, what girl would give up her freedom to tote a Birkin?

Creepy-Ass Sci-Fi Valentine Is Killing Me

What lunatic actually thinks that an alien pointing a gun at his love, while robotically chanting "you must be mine" and "obey me," would make any gal swoon? He's gotta be joking, but even so, this is more nightmarish than funny. Run, Lisa Peters of Dublin, run! No, don't booty dance- run!

Plan 9 From Outer Space: The Best Movie Dialogue Ever

Depending on how you look at it, Ed Wood Jr. was either one of the worst filmmakers who ever lived or, as I see it, one of its geniuses. It takes work to make bad movies this bad. And from his magnum opus Plan 9 From Outer Space to his sensitive (and autobiographical) look into crossdressing, Glen or Glenda, this dude knew how to write some dialogue. How can you argue with the following line? "We are all interested in the future, because that is where we are all going to spend the rest of our lives." He's right! Check out this montage for more zingers.

Plan 9 From Outer Space: Worst Movie Ever?

This <strike>fiasco</strike> masterpiece by Ed Wood, Jr. has been called the worst movie ever made. Plan 9 is about aliens who want to stop humans from creating a weapon that will destroy the universe. How to do this? Through Plan 9, which involves the resurrection of zombies to get the planet's attention. Bela Lugosi (the famous Dracula) was in it for money cuz he was a morphine addict at the end of his life, but he died before the film ended. Problem solved: just have a chiropractor skulk around covering his face throughout the entire film. There's bad--and then there's craptastic.

Hillary Talks Sexism, Obama's Job Offer, and Mad Men to Vogue

Hillary Clinton finally sat down for a long-overdue Vogue interview. She offended editor Anna Wintour during the primaries by turning down the fashion mag out fear of looking "too feminine." And though she won't be on the December cover, the article is as substantial and satisfying as a cover story.

From night swimming alone to her favorite shows (Mad Men!), we see a side of Madame Secretary that all the vetting in the world would not unearth. See some of what she had to say below.

On visiting countries as a high-ranking female: "You can go to some countries and there's not a woman in the room. They don't even make the effort to give me the token woman minister. . . . And in lots of African countries the honorific for women is 'Mama.' So I had lots of people say to me, 'Mama, what about this; Mama, what about that?'"

On President Obama's job offer: "I was stunned after the election when President Obama asked me to consider this. . . . I really was very unconvinced. I did not think it was the right thing to do. I didn't want to do it. I just really had a lot of doubts, and I kept suggesting other people: Well, how about this person! How about that person! This one would be really good! But then a friend of mine called me and basically said, 'How would you have felt if you'd been elected and you'd called him and asked him to do this?' And that really made a big impression on me. How do you say no? And so . . . I said yes. And here I am."

On Mad Men: "That's how it was! That's why the women's-liberation movement was so shocking. It was like news from outer space"

See what else she had to say after the jump.

Meet Tessa: The Chopstick-Wielding, Spaghetti-Eating Cat From Outer Space

She eats ice cream with a spoon, Fancy Feast with a fork, and spaghetti with chopsticks! I know we've posted this before, but I guess there was a resurgence of interest in utensil-usin' cats while I was on vacation (naturally!) so here I am playing catch up. (Speaking of ketchup, I bet Faye taught Tessa to suck that up with a straw!)

Colbert Nation to Conquer Outer Space

Stephen Colbert always has his eye out for naming contests. He's managed to get his name on an ice cream flavor, a Hungarian bridge, and a bald eagle. Thanks to his fans' enthusiasm for write-in campaigns, he might get a room in the International Space Station!

NASA wants the public to name the upcoming addition to the space station, now called Node 3. NASA has opened public voting until March 20th. Node 1 is called Unity, and Node 2 is called Harmony. Besides providing astronauts with a spectacular view of Earth, Node 3 will also convert urine into drinking water. Who wouldn't want his name attached to such a life-giving node!

To watch Stephen ask NASA's William Gerstenmaier to commit to naming the space module "Colbert" if he wins, read more.

Astrology: Do You Believe in Saturn's Return?

If you're anywhere between 27 and 30 and have ever had, oh, a problem, someone might tell you not to worry - or, actually do worry. It's all part of a perfect celestial storm known as Saturn's return. Taking about 29 years to orbit the Earth, Saturn returns to the place it was in at your birth every 29 years. This means one thing to astrologers - rebirth!

Birth is painful; rebirth isn't much better, especially considering Saturn is a sign of growth. Astrologers believe Saturn's return represents life changes: the first time it returns in your late 20s, you enter adulthood. The next time, around 60, you enter maturity, and the final time, at 90, you enter the wisdom of old age. None of it comes easy.

So what does Saturn's return mean for those approaching 30? It's out with the old and in with the new: self-examination, career changes, bad relationships ending, good relationships deepening, and, hey, maybe you'll have a baby! To which I say, these are all things that happen anyway.

Yet, Saturn's return is all over pop culture. No Doubt named its 2000 album Return of Saturn as Gwen Stefani approached her 29th birthday; there's a book - Surviving Saturn's Return - about it; and then there's this amazing blog that connects Saturn's return with events in celebrities lives. It's quite morbid, actually, blaming Annie Leibovitz's money troubles and the deaths of John Hughes, Heath Ledger, and Julia Child on the return of Saturn.

Sound about right to you, or should the idea return to outer space?

Sorry, No Refunds?!

Would-be Japanese Space Tourist wants $21M back

You know how you sometimes buy a $200 pair of shoes, say, and then later regret it? Well, replace "shoes" with "trip to outer space" and $200 with $21 million and you'll understand Japanese millionaire Daisuke Enomoto's position. (As much as you can understand any problems a millionaire would have.) Without getting into the he said/she said details, this "eccentric entrepreneur" paid Virginia-based Space Adventures a buttload of money so that he could dress up as his favorite cartoon character and, through Space Adventure's alliance with the Russian space agency, be the first space tourist to do a spacewalk. He's backed out of the deal because of his kidneys stones (like I said, it's a long story, click here if you're interested for their side of the story), and they're all, fogeddaboutit. Wow. Sucks to be you, Daisuke! Buyer of redonkulously self-indulgent trips to outer space beware!

Source
