Making Tiaras a Habit: Nuns in a Beauty Pageant - Good Idea?

I'll watch any pageant, or any show about pageants but this one? I'm not sure. An Italian priest is organizing an online beauty pageant for nuns called "Miss Sister 2008." The aim of the contest is to fight the stereotype that all nuns are old and homely. The priest behind the plan says, "Nuns are a bit excluded, they are a bit marginalized in ecclesiastical life. This will be an occasion to make their contribution more visible."

And the answer to the big question I know was on the tip of your tongue is this: "We are not going to parade nuns in bathing suits." He continues, "But being ugly is not a requirement for becoming a nun. External beauty is gift from God, and we mustn't hide it." Visitors to the website hosting the online pageant are supposed to vote for the nun "they consider a model."

The effort, said to have been inspired by suggestions from nuns, has drawn criticism from the association of Catholic teachers saying, "It's an initiative that belittles the role of nuns who have dedicated themselves to God." The idea of showcasing nuns' beauty as a means of "making their contribution more visible," is an interesting concept. Is it an inspired way of bringing the life of a nun into modern times, or missing the point of being a nun altogether?

Holy Carp! Nun Landlords Sue Tenants For Fish Smell

The owners of a NYC apartment building have filed a lawsuit against their tenants who continue to stink up the place when they cook large quantities of fish. These landlords seeking relief from the smell have a special connection to another Lord - they're nuns!

In the lawsuit, the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart Inc. allege that the defendants produce smells "similar to that of vomit or rotten meat." In fact, one resident worried that a dead body was decomposing and called the authorities!

The nuns have asked the court to make the fish-fryers stop producing the orders, while also paying the nuns' legal fees and damages of at least $50,000. Do you think a court can determine what smell should be illegal, or is it too subjective? While it seems reasonable to ask neighbors to stop making your place smell like vomit or a corpse, I wonder if they should pay thousands in damages.

70,000 Women a Year Die From Unsafe Abortions

After three years of research, the New York-based Guttmacher Institute has concluded that although contraceptive use has lowered the number of abortions worldwide, unsafe abortions still account for a staggering 70,000 deaths a year, particularly in the developing world. More than half the deaths are in sub-Saharan Africa, a region with the lowest rates of contraceptive use and the highest rates of unintended pregnancies.

"In much of the developing world," said the Institute's president Sharon Camp, "abortion remains highly restricted, and unsafe abortion is common and continues to damage women's health and threaten their survival."

The report calls for easing developing nations' abortion laws, citing that laws banning or restricting abortion don't keep it from happening, they just make abortion unsafe and either self-induced or performed by unskilled people in any unhygienic conditions.

The Guttmacher Institute's recommendations: expand access to family planning and modern contraceptives and to legal and safe abortion, and improve the coverage and quality of post-abortion care.

Their recommendations have been criticized by Deirdre McQuade, a policy director for the US Conference of Catholic Bishops' Secretariat for Pro-life Activities who also castigates priests or nuns who make referrals to family planning services, which she says veers from church policy. "We need to be much more creative in assisting women with supportive services," she said, "so they don't need to resort to the unnatural act of abortion."

Ireland Released Five Volumes on Abuses, But No Names

Ireland released an extensive report yesterday revealing that more than one thousand children were beaten, neglected, or raped at Catholic reform schools. The five-volume accounting took nine years to compile and covers six decades, but it doesn't include a single name of a priest, brother, or nun who abused children at the Catholic institutions. A religious order in question successfully sued the government in 2004 to keep the names secret. Thus, the perpetrators of rape and other physical, emotional, and sexual abuse are free from criminal prosecutions. Now victims say they've been cheated of justice.

While the victims feel vindicated by the inquiry, many maintain that they never would have opened their wounds if they knew it would result in zero criminal accountability. The report did offer over 20 ways the government could address the wrongs, including: building a monument, improving child protection services, and providing counseling to the victims. The Catholic Church in Ireland has also apologized.

Miss Sassy Gruaig Rua has clearly not changed much since she was a fiery little tot. Our friend from Ireland tells us what she likes about GiggleSugar and throws in a joke at the end to boot! Yay, Gruaig Rua!

GS: What’s your motto?
GR: “When life gives you lemons, just add vodka.” It’s so true! Seriously though, my favourite motto is “Dream as if you’ll live forever, live as if you’ll die today” - James Dean. I’m managing the first part, just struggling with the second part. But I’m working on it!

GS: Where are you from?
GR: Ireland, The Emerald Isle, The Land of Leprechauns and Guinness, Top o’ the Morning. I’ll stop now

GS: What do you do?
GR: I work for the government. I’m tempted to leave it at that so everyone will imagine that I am this glamorous undercover agent, but no. I work for the local government county council offices. You know, I’m too lazy to explain it so I’ve copied the mission statement from our website! “Cork County Council is a local authority established by statute whose corporate purpose is to enhance the physical, social, cultural and economic environment of the county in a sustainable and socially inclusive manner, so as to improve the quality of life of its citizens.”

GS: How would you describe your sense of humor?
GR: Childish and sarcastic. Could I BE anymore like Chandler Bing?

GS: What’s your favorite GiggleSugar post?
GR: Anything to do with dogs! Seriously. I’m a canine-aholic! I also love the Family Guy posts. And I really miss Pearl – she’s a legend!

GS: Who’s the cutest funny man and funny woman?
GR: The love of my life will always be Mr. George Clooney. Ok, so he’s not technically a “comedian,” but he’s a funny guy! As for a good looking female comedian, I’m stumped. That’s terrible isn’t it?! Oooooh, I’m going to say Tyra Banks, although I don’t think she’s intentionally funny on ANTM, but I sure do laugh my ass off!

GS: Who are your favorite male and female comedians?
GR: I just love Kath & Kim. I ordered the Series 4 DVD online and when I got home from work today, it was here!! I’m not ashamed to say I did a little dance around my bedroom I also love Catherine Tate, the woman is a genius. As for the male of the species, I’m going to go with a duet – David Williams and Matt Lucas of Little Britain. Genius.

GS: What’s your favorite comedy of all time?
GR: Just one? Too hard! My favourite depends on my mood. I love Priscilla Queen of the Desert, The Princess Bride, Little Miss Sunshine, Old School and…….my guilty pleasure….White Chicks. I know, I know! The funniest movie I’ve seen recently is Superbad. Ahhhh, McLovin.

GS: If your life were a comedy, what would it be?
GR: It would be Ugly Betty. Seriously. My office seems to have gradually transformed into “Mode.” Each day there are prettier and more stylish girls walking the halls. And the two colleagues I go to lunch with look like freakin' supermodels – I’m like an oompa-loompa walking between them!

GS: Do you look like someone famous?
GR: Well, I tried a lookalike website earlier this year and it said that I looked like Audrey Tautou. Hah, I wish I did! Also listed were Shannen Doherty and Sophia Bush. But the one I most looked like was Thora Birch. It’s only in a couple of specific pictures, but it’s uncanny!

GR free-for-all: I’m 28, but feel like I’m still 19. I’m living at home
with my parents (god love 'em!) because I’m desperately trying to save for my upcoming world travels. Yes, indeedy, if everything goes according to plan next year, I should to be heading to Australia for 12 months. Fingers, toes, and eyes crossed people! I’m also completely and totally obsessed with dogs. Amazingly though, I just have the one – my golden retriever Holly. I just adore her!! She’s a bit of a nutter, like her mama! If and when I get my own place, I hope to adopt lots more fuzzy friends. I’ve had several people tell me that they can see me in five years, living in a foreign land, driving one of those small convertible jeeps, with about 15 dogs hanging out on the back seat. They forget to mention that Mr. Clooney will be in the passenger seat……And finally I’m going to share my favourite joke: Two nuns are driving down a road late at night when a vampire jumps onto the bonnet. The nun who is driving says to the other, "Quick! Show him your cross." So the other nun leans out of the window and shouts, "Get off our f*cking car."

Pope Names Four New Saints, Including First Indian Woman

Thousands of people appeared in St. Peter’s Square yesterday to watch as Pope Benedict XVI gave the Roman Church four new saints, one of who was of particular importance to Indian Catholics. Sister Alphonsa of the Immaculate Conception, is the first Indian woman to achieve sainthood. Her nomination is seen as a comfort to those who have recently suffered at the hands of Hindu violence in India.

The three other saints are: Gaetano Errico, a Neapolitan priest who created an order of missionaries in the 19th century, Sister Maria Bernarda who dedicated her life as a nun in Ecuador and Colombia and Narcisa de Jesus Martillo Moran, another woman who aided the sick and poor in Ecuador. Mother Teresa was beatified in 2003, and though she's usually associated with India, she was Albanian.

It's one small squeeze for woman, one giant leap for hug-kind. I didn't believe the prevalence of the McCain/Palin embrace until I went searching for pictures - and found the mother lode of warm greetings. The second mixed-gender ticket in history is breaking the boundaries of the cold handshake with a now signature - yet brief and businesslike - clinch.

What a change from 1984, when candidate Walter Mondale had a strict look-don't-touch policy with his running mate, Geraldine Ferraro - so much so that he didn't even put palm to back when the two stood side by side on stage, with waving arms high. Ferraro remembers, “people were afraid that it would look like, ‘Oh, my God, they’re dating.’ ”

Campaign advisors say all of the affection rules have evolved on the trail naturally, but some etiquette experts disagree. The former White House social secretary under Jacqueline Kennedy says, "He's hugging her to show the world that he’s all for her, and protecting her, but she doesn’t need that."

The McCain/Palin hugs, of course, have a chaste distance to them - or as Christopher Buckley mused, “As the nuns used to say before school dances, 'Leave room for the Holy Ghost.'" Is there enough room? Does all the hugging make you warm and fuzzy - or is he treating (and greeting) her differently because she's a gal?
