This Just In: Scarlett Johansson Makes a Midtown Move

Remember how Scarlett Johansson sold her TriBeCa loft? Well, you didn't think she'd stay in a hotel her whole life now, did you? Course not. According to Big Time, she has purchased a four-room penthouse in Midtown Manhattan for $2.1 million. The listing for the 2-bedroom, 2-bath condo reads:

Triple Mint Penthouse designed by architect/owner with the most discriminating taste! Elegant and simple with clean lines, top-of-line finishes, and an extraordinary chef's kitchen. In addition, both bathrooms are exceptionally renovated with stone and wood. The terrace is large and beautifully landscaped and features open city views. Additionally, there is a lovely greenhouse off the bedroom. Superb closets and much more!

Sounds pretty fabulous to me. Those open city views are certainly an exceptional selling point. Maybe she can have deal hunter Nick Olsen who lives nearby come over for a design consultation, or just stop by the MoMa in the 'hood for some interior inspiration . . .

This Just In: Scarlett Johansson Sells Tribeca Loft at a Loss

According to Big Time, Scarlett Johansson has sold her 1,300-square-foot duplex loft in Manhattan's Tribeca neighborhood for nearly $1.89 million. The starlet purchased the unit for nearly $1.95 million in January of 2006, meaning she took a loss on this sale, perhaps thanks to the looming housing crisis. But, a loss of $52,000 is uncommon in Manhattan, if not everywhere, so perhaps next time Johansson should hire a more experienced broker. The loft sits in a former textile building, a Beaux Arts landmark designed by renowned architect Henry Janeway Hardenbergh, which was built in 1901. The listing reads:

An airy, state-of-the-art duplex, this loft features 22-foot ceilings, hand-painted Tuscan walls, Brazilian cherry wood floors, Limestone fireplace and double-height windows. This Just In: Kevin Spacey Slices His Tribeca Price Tag

According to the New York Post, Kevin Spacey has cut the price of his TriBeCa duplex from approximately $5 million to $4.67 million. The sprawling 2,363-square-foot, 3-bedrooms, 2.5-bath apartment occupies the top two floors in a five apartment boutique condo building. The listing reads:

A complete Crestron system controls the window shades, lighting, entertainment system and internet. The wrap around terrace has open views, built-in grill, planters at every turn, custom lighting, sound system, timed irrigation system and retractable awnings. A perfect oasis for outdoor dinning and lounging.

Perhaps Spacey needs to downsize because he's been losing money at the casinos lately?

This Just In: Sting Settles on Central Park West

According to Big Time, Sting has purchased a 5,500-square-foot condo unit on the 16^th floor of a Central Park West building for $26.5 million. Apparently, according to records, Sting actually signed a contract to purchase the unit on May 26, 2006, but the deal didn't formally close until March 11, 2008. So, this purchase has been almost two years in the making! The CPW building is truly magnificent, boasting an elegant motor courtyard, a 35-x-45-foot limestone and marble lobby with two fireplaces and custom English oak paneling, an unprecedented view of Central Park and the Manhattan skyline, a 75-foot sky-lit lap pool, a private theater screening room, a private library, and 30 climate-controlled wine rooms. Sting also owns an 18-room duplex co-op elsewhere on Central Park West, which was at one point on the market for $24 million, meaning he and his wife now own more than $50 million worth of real estate on Central Park West! This Just In: Richard Gere Puts an Asset on Market

According to Real Estalker, Richard Gere has put his four-bedroom, four-bath property in the Palazzo Chupi building in New York's West Village on the market for nearly $18 million. You may remember the building, which was designed by Julian Schnabel of directorial fame, from my recent Coveted Crib. Schnabel is said to have "created the apartment to feel like Venice in Manhattan." The listing reads:

Room proportions are grand, ceilings are 12'6"+/- high, light streams in from all directions and there are huge French doors in every room leading to terraces with Hudson River views. A large wood-burning fireplace exists in the living room and there is a covered 66'+/- colonnade running along the entire north side of the apartment. Drama abounds. Amenities include parking, elevator, air conditioning, pool, and 24-hour doorman.

Well, it turns out that Gere isn't much for old Venezia; he purchased the property in September 2007 for only $12 million, and never moved in. He's made few improvements aside from aesthetic changes like changing the color of the kitchen cabinets, so the $6-million markup seems a little absurd. But, it may actually be a steal — Schnabel himself is selling the two other units in the building (there are only five) for $32 million each.

This Just In: Two Andy Warhol Pop-erties Up for Grabs (Part II)

You recently learned that two former homes of Andy Warhol are on the market, and I gave you details on (and showed you images of) one of the properties. While the other property may not cost you forty million, it's certainly a landmark, and has plenty of original architectural features. The property, listed at over $5.9 million, is an 8-room, 4-story Carnegie Hill townhouse, which he purchased in 1959, became known as the first of his "factories" in Manhattan.
According to the listing, he moved in there with his mother and "25 cats all named Sam," and lived there until 1974 (when he moved to the other UES property). The property is "one of six historic adjoined buildings designed by Henry J. Hardenbergh, renowned architect of the Plaza Hotel and the Dakota," and it is also the place where Warhol's "Campbell’s Soup series Brillo, the Do It Yourself and the Close Cover before Striking series, Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley," were produced, and stars like Elizabeth Taylor visited. It features "a dramatic center staircase, high ceilings, fireplaces with original mantels, elegant moldings, magnificent woodwork, and hardwood floors." An NY Times article says that in the early '60s, the ground floor was used as his studio, where he propped up "his paint-by-number canvases against a large fireplace mantel in a wood-paneled room." Not bad, eh? I hope whoever purchases this property respects its cultural importance, or perhaps, makes it open to the public.

This Just In: Two Andy Warhol Pop-erties Up for Grabs

According to Page Six, two of Andy Warhol's former Manhattan residences are on the market, under Corcoran listings. One of the properties is a 12-room, six-story Upper East Side house owned by former Viacom head Tom Freston, and has an asking price of $38.5 million. The pop icon "paid only $310,000 for the now-renovated 1910 townhouse," and "lived there from 1974 until his death in 1987." Amongst its "exceptional finishes and extraordinary architectural detail," it boasts "a master floor plus three additional master bedrooms, a wonderful library, living room, dining room, chef's kitchen, staff suite, gym and seven wood burning fireplaces," as well as an elevator, says the listing. Warhol is also honored by a plaque on the front of the building, placed there by the Historic Landmark Preservation Center. This Just In: Brooke Shields Movin' to the West Village Jungle

Since Lipstick Jungle has been reinstated, Brooke Shields and her producer/writer hubby Chris Henchy are anti-ing up for some new NYC digs. According to Big Time, the couple have signed a contract to purchase a vacant Greek Revival house in New York's West Village. The townhouse, which has been on the market for $5.6 million, has four apartments on four floors, with original parlor floor details, "eight fireplaces, original wide plank floors, original mantles and moldings," and a large, South-facing garden, according to the listing.
The 3,314-square-foot, 18-room, 5.5-bath building has four kitchens and was built in 1905. Although the place may need some renovation (what to do with four kitchens?), the original architectural details alone — exposed brick walls, ornate fireplace mantles, tin tile ceiling — as well as the built-in cabinetry, would be enough to justify some renovation costs. Shields also owns a home in Los Angeles’s Pacific Palisades area, as well as a co-op in SoHo, where she'll presumably reside until her new place is up and running.

This Just In: Nicole and Joel Call NYC Home

According to Page Six, Nicole Richie and Joel Madden quietly purchased "a two-bedroom, two-bath downtown condo on the Bowery" for $999,999 in December. The 1,000-square-foot, 11th-floor pad, which is said to be "very simple, nothing high design," and "was sold unrenovated," will be the primary residence of the family of three. A Corcoran listing for the building says, "The kitchen features stainless steel appliances, granite counters, and Shaker-style maple cabinetry. The baths are finished with marble floors, walls, and vanity."
Page Six notes, "celeb-friendly clubs BLVD and Crash Mansion are on the block." Let's hope baby Harlow gives it a few years before becoming a club kid.

Coveted Crib: Nick Olsen's Anti-Crack Den

In early October, 25-year-old Nick Olsen, a protégé of high-profile interior designer Miles Redd, moved into a studio apartment in midtown Manhattan, which he said looked like a "crack den." It didn't look like a lair for substance abuse for long; Nick has a history of overcoming the perils of big-city living. You may recognize Olsen as the "Deal Hunter" from Domino's blog, Daily Dose. Well, it was because of Olsen's thrifty, inspiring, and jaw-dropping transformation of his first NYC apartment, his refined sensibility and his can-do attitude that he actually landed the gig with Domino, in the first place. If Olsen couldn't afford high design, he "faked it" with flea-market finds and tactics like covering an Ikea table with faux marble paper . . . until it looked straight out of, um, a Condé Nast magazine. Redd saw the digs at Olsen's housewarming party and tipped off Deborah Needleman, Domino's editor-in-chief, who quickly snatched it (and him) up for her November '06 cover. For a tour, read more

This Just In: Olsen Twins to Sell Their NYC Penthouse

According to the New York Observer, Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen have put their 5 bedroom, 4.5 bath home in the West Village, NYC, on the market for $11,995,000. The twins have apparently been renting it out for $35,000 a month for a few years, but did help create it. They "bought four properties from the developer preconstruction and designed their own floor plan in collaboration with the developer."

The Corcoran Group calls the listing "one of the largest penthouses in the West Village to ever become available," and a "12 room trophy, commanding some of the most spectacular water and city views in all of Manhattan through 53 large picture windows."

Some of the notable amenities include a private elevator, a glass-enclosed wood-burning fireplace, and a 22' x 18' eat-in kitchen with an oversized granite island and Viking Professional 6 burner stove. Oh, and naturally, an oversized walk-in closet with Southern views of The Statue of Liberty. Corcoran's broker, Jared Seligman, also said, “You have a separate staff exit; you can have the most fabulous parties." I'd hope that with a preteen entertainment firm (Dualstar) raking in $1 billion a year, the Olsens could, at the very least, throw a good party...
