Americans Are Optimistic About 2009 - Are You?

Despite the recession and shaky economy, most Americans are optimistic about what lies ahead in 2009. A new poll shows expectations for better conditions were higher among younger generations with 64 percent of those under 45 having an optimistic view.

Younger Americans were more likely to adopt New Year's resolutions as well. More than half of those aged 45 or younger plan to adopt lifestyle changes next year, compared with 29 percent of those 45 or older.

Last week, CitizenSugar readers shared suggestions for America's New Year's resolutions, with an emphasis on fixing the economy and international relations. There's certainly some change in the works - are you still feeling fine with 2009?

What Should Be America's New Year's Resolution?

Every year individual Americans vow to lose weight, pay off debts, quit smoking, or volunteer. It may be time for the entire country to make a commitment to reform in 2009. The country sure has a lot of debt to pay off, government policy could do more to fight obesity and volunteer programs are crucial to keeping social programs running. This year, America could resolve to become more healthy, by joining other Western nations by creating universal healthcare. Or, as a nation the US could become more environmentally responsible, proving a domestic and international commitment to conservation.

Obviously, there is lot Americans want to, shall I say, "change" this year. What do you think the country should make its number one priority for 2009?

In this Nike ad, a woman makes good on her promise to "bob for lobsters" if she doesn't maintain her new year's resolutions. Yowza. If I fall short of a) exercising every day and b) writing the great American novel within the next year--I'll just make up new resolutions!
