Sunday Confessional: I Cheated on Our Resolution

My boyfriend has been smoking cigarettes since he was in high school; he is now 31. When we started dating, I was a non-smoker but I recently picked up on his habit. I've been suggesting that we both quit for some time now, but it wasn't until this New Year's Eve that he felt ready and determined to kick the habit. He knew it was going to be hard to quit, but doing it together made it seem much more manageable for him.

We were doing great - three days cigarette free - but last night when out with my girlfriends, I cheated and smoked two cigarettes. I tried to cover up the smell as best I could, but he was luckily asleep when I got home.

When I told him about my night with the girls the next day, I purposely left out what I had done. I want him to be successful in his quest, but I feel terrible for lying to him. I've since sneaked a couple more cigarettes, but he has no clue. Can I be forgiven for keeping my cheating to myself?

DearSugar and Don't Want to Be a Jerk Jenny need your help. She has plans for New Year's Eve with a friend. Is it OK for her to ditch her friend and go out with a guy she has a crush on instead?

Dear Sugar,

My best friend and her husband are throwing a fabulous New Year's Eve party, and I was so psyched to go. I bought this hot little black dress to wear, but I'm having an issue. You see, this guy I'm strictly friends with asked me to go and I said yes. Then the following day, this guy from work I've had a huge crush on invited me to a holiday party at a fancy restaurant.

So I know that I've already made plans, but I really want to break them and see where the night takes me with my crush. We've been flirting for weeks and I really like this guy. Is it wrong to break the plans I had with my friend? What should I do?

What Celebrity Would You Want to Kiss at the Stroke of Midnight?

One benefit to being single on New Year's Eve is that you could end up getting a midnight kiss from an alluring stranger. Now let's imagine your NYE party is inhabited by celebs. It's no secret that I have a huge crush on Ben Affleck, so if we happened to be at the same New Year's party, I would make sure to be right next to him at the stroke of midnight in hopes that he'd be my New Year's kiss! Since there certainly isn't a shortage of good looking men in Hollywood, what I want to know is, what celebrity would you want to kiss at midnight on Dec. 31?

Some people get bummed out if they're single on New Year's Eve and have no one to kiss at midnight. But this holiday is about way more than who you lock lips with when the ball drops. For some tips on how to enjoy New Year's as a single and fabulous woman, click here to read more.

New Year's is all about getting dressed up and celebrating the end of the year with the people you love, so try not to get too fixated on what you'll do come midnight.
If you're single, make plans with other single friends so you don't feel like the odd woman out.
I'm sure you will have a plethora of parties to choose from come Dec. 31, so go to the one where most of your friends will be.
As soon as the countdown starts, make sure to be surrounded by your friends. The best part about going to a big party is being able to celebrate with everyone, so hug and kiss all of your friends when the clock strikes midnight.
If you get lucky, or just tired, be sure to tell you're friends if you leave the party so someone knows where you are.

I hope these tips help you this New Year's. For the record, I have had my best New Year's Eves when I was single, just dancing and having fun, so I recommend doing the same! Be safe, don't drink and drive, and Happy New Year!

Oh Tara, Tara, Tara. All they asked of you was to do the New Year's countdown; now I know why counting backwards is part of sobriety tests. I thought Paris Hilton getting a million bucks to host New Year's Eve in Sydney, Australia was a lot of money, but maybe getting a celeb to count accurately is harder than I thought.
