Last night while I was watching the Grammys, my ears perked up when the president of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences Neil Portnow began addressing a certain two-time Grammy winner directly — President Barack Obama.
Potnow wasted little time getting to his point: He wants the president to create a new cabinet position, namely secretary of the arts. On stage he persuaded:And to our new president, we have a request: Our finest national treasure is our culture and the arts.

America's wild horses may be the latest casualties of federal budget problems. Thirty-three thousand wild horses roam the West, well above the 27,000 target. Expensive holding facilities house another 30,000 rounded-up horses, making them available for adoption.

Africa: a continent of untold riches in gold and diamonds, contrasted with shocking poverty of citizens living on the surface just above the treasure trove. Veins of gold run through the earth demanding to be mined — a job dangerous enough for adults, but savagely brutal when you're four years old.
The AP conducted a yearlong study of six African gold mines and found more than 150 child miners to interview, tracking the gold from kid to ring.

Firefighters are battling at least 100 brushfires that still rage over Virginia and the Carolinas. Governor Tim Kaine of Virginia has declared a state of emergency as half of his state's counties are burning. Though no deaths have been reported yet, fires displaced scores of residents — the largest fire reached 400 to 500 acres in Bedford County near Roanoke.
