Dressed for Arrest, Eh?

I'm sure no one wakes up and decides what to wear thinking they're going to get thrown in the slammer later that day. Most people dress to impress or dress for success, but dress for arrest? Not so much. All of these fools unintentionally picked out the perfect tee to wear for their mug shots later that day. It's an ironic twist of fate that the gramps with "I am the law!" scrawled across his chest ended up behind bars, thanks to the law. Dumb Mugshots

Getting arrested is pretty serious - or so you would think. The people in these mugshots thumb their noses (and other body parts) at the authorities taking their mugshots. Either that, or they're so tragic looking you get the sense that getting arrested was inevitable. Sigh.

The arrest happened way back in August, but given our in-depth reporting on mugshot fashions today, this story is too apropos to pass up. Amanda Lynn Bailey was charged with driving under the influence (and without a license, no less!) during the early hours of the morning last summer. On-Demand Fingerprint Machines Let Police ID in the Street

Mobile fingerprint scanners are hitting the beat in the UK, helping police officers issue identity checks on the street. Right now, police must take a suspect into custody to issue fingerprint checks.

Thanks to the scanner, the size of a cell phone, the time of checking identity would go form from 67 minutes, to five, thus reducing the number of police needed by 366 officers. The next step would be to transfer mugshot images to verify identity when fingerprints are not available. To see why some worry that the government is overreaching with this technology, read more.

Officials insist that the prints will be deleted once checked. Proponents also believe that the procedure would reduce the number of mistaken arrests. Yet, others worry that the pricey gadgets could violate civil liberties by increasing surveillance and paving the way for an expansion of powers toward totalitarianism.

NY County Has to Remove DWI "Wall of Shame": Fair Move?

Drunk drivers are losing part of their 15 minutes of shame after a judge's ruling deemed that New York's Nassau County had been violating due process by posting the mug shots of DWI suspects on its Internet "Wall of Shame." The county began posting the mug shots of DWI arrests on Memorial Day, and has since been sued by one woman who was pictured. She said the online gallery was unconstitutional as it was posted before her trial. The county attorney says the mugshots are public documents and are just being given a public airing.

The judge however points to the power of the web, saying that posting the photos to the Internet creates "limitless and eternal notoriety." However, the county executive and proponent of the "Wall" says of the program, "The objective of what we're trying to do here is to change the culture that exists related to drunk driving, that it's not just a socially acceptable crime."

Since the Memorial Day start of the program, more than 1,400 drunk drivers have been pictured, and drunk driving arrests are up 6 percent over the previous year.

There's nothing quite like mug-shot fashion. I guess you never know when you're going to get arrested, but somehow these criminals managed to pick the most inappropriate, ironic, or just plain tacky shirts. So which lucky contender gets the prize? And by "prize" I mean "ridicule."

Check This: Clinton Campaign Adviser Oops

What do a senior Clinton adviser and Lindsay Lohan have in common? A stylish mug shot and an arrest for DWI, apparently. The night before the New Hampshire primary (and Clinton's big win) campaign adviser Sidney Blumenthal was arrested in Nashua for aggravated DWI after being caught by police traveling 70 mph in a 30 mph zone and subsequently failing a field sobriety test. Mr. Blumenthal will be arraigned later this month. Is the Mischa-Lindsay- Paris-Nicole propensity for drinking and driving hitting politics too? What's behind this outbreak of high-profile mugshots?
