This past week the Postcards From Yo Momma editors prepared us for Mother's Day by helping us understand mom better. Now authors of a book - Love, Mom - they should know!

What did we learn? Mothers will go to any length to talk to us. Their messages don't always say what they mean, but they do always mean something. From the Staunch Cheerleader to the Technically Savvy and Luv-ing It, moms are keeping up the times so they can keep up with us.

Outsourcing work we don't want to do to foreign nations is the American way. And on Mother's Day, when you're too busy to call good ol' mom, you used to have two options: call her even though you're too busy, or forget to call her and give her a doubly special gift for her birthday. Now, you have an alternative: MomSourcing, the outsourcing of your responsibilities to your mom to foreign nationals. When nothing but (second) best will do! Moms can be such pushovers. Sometimes all it takes are a few well-chosen words, like "I respect you," to make her day. So if you forgot to send a Mother's Day gift, don't despair: there's still time to send an ecard! Better yet, send one for a good cause.

The Respect Campaign, devoted to the prevention of family violence, has an easy-to-send ecard that gives you plenty of space to tell your mom - or anyone, for that matter - why you look up to her. So throw together a few elegant lines about what she taught you about respecting yourself and make your mom's day.

Our last email is from an increasingly popular mom - the Technically Savvy and Loving It. She's probably your Facebook friend and if she wants to know what you're up to, she'll Google you. The bright side? She'll never ask your iPhone to send her BlackBerry a message. Probably! Technically Savvy and Loving It moms are known to have Technically Challenged-mom tendencies.

Today's a typical mom email - oversharing, embarrassing, and caring - from the I'm Just Being a Mom . . . and Maybe a Nurse mom. She cares about your health. She cares about your social life. And she cares enough to let you know she was at the gynecologist today. You should go, too!

Today's my favorite - the Partner in Crime Mom. She's a lot like the ubiquitous best-friend mom but more devious. She's not afraid of lying, or telling you to lie, or even telling you what exactly that lie should be. Besides, it's for a good cause! A job.

Just tell them your appointment is about "female stuff" and they won't ask any more. And it is, right? You're a female, and it's your stuff.

Doree and Jessica: PMS worked as an excuse in gym class, and it can work into your 40s.

Do Tell: What Did Your Mother Teach You About Respect?

"Respect" isn't just an awesome song by Aretha Franklin. It's a seemingly simple word loaded with meaning, from showing respect for our elders to seeking respect at work to demanding respect in relationships. In the Respect Campaign of the Family Violence Prevention Fund, it means respecting yourself and your loved ones in order to avoid resorting to violence or emotional abuse.

So in honor of Mother's Day and the Respect mission, tell me: what lessons did you learn from your mother about respecting yourself and others?

Momma Said: Postcards From Yo Momma Read Our Emails

It's hard to believe we used to laugh at our moms' hilarious emails alone. But we had to! We had no idea anyone else would find them funny until Postcards From Yo Momma - the site that gave children a place to publish mom's emails - came along.

What began as two friends IMing emails from their moms over Gchat turned into an overnight success when Postcards tapped into a secret that had been password protected in our inboxes: all moms sound the same - smart, loving, and un-self-consciously hilarious. And now, their wisdom has been bound into a book, Love, Mom: Poignant, Goofy, Brilliant Messages From Home.

Using the best of the 7,000 emails sent to Postcards From Yo Momma, Love, Mom looks at the modern-day relationship between adult children and mothers, and how the Internet has changed it for the better. As coauthor Jessica Grose's mother said, "In a not particularly intrusive way, I can be part of your life." Unintrusive, until they find our blogs!

I'll be thinking of you all day today. Remember, when people are
bombastic and caustic it is a sign of insecurity. They put their pants
on one leg at a time, and probably don't know the difference between
straw and hay!

Do Tell: How Are You Most Like Your Mom?

They say when we grow up, we turn into our mothers. I know that I'm often startled when I get glimpses of my mom's face in the mirror, but more fascinating to me are the ways our personalities often resemble one another.

As I get older, I'm more aware of the traits that make me similar to my mom, whether it's our fondness for cheese, our taste in earrings, or our tendency to interrupt people during spirited conversations. So in honor of Mother's Day this Sunday (you sent a card, right?!), tell me: how are you most like your mom, in both good and bad ways?
