Today's Fashion World Might Have Passed Up Cindy

Standards of beauty might change with time, but I think most of us can agree that Cindy Crawford is a gorgeous woman. Even so, the classic late-'80s/early-'90s supermodel thinks that the 2009 fashion industry would have passed her up. Cindy told German magazine Bunte that her "big breasts, normal thighs, and toned upper arms" are not so desired anymore. She said: "I would not have become a supermodel in 2009. I look too healthy."

Cindy's probably onto something, considering even extremely thin models are being photoshopped to look impossibly skinny. Of course, Cindy isn't losing any sleep over any of this. She says now that she is in her 40s, she knows her "strengths beyond being pretty."

While there has been a recent push to use more normal looking women in fashion magazines, I don't think Cindy's goddess-like beauty would qualify her as average. Still, her healthier look could be a welcome change from the sickly figures we often see walking down the runway. Do you think models like Cindy could make a comeback in the near future?

Models Strip Against Climate Change - Love It or Leave It?

A few days ago, an International Day of Climate Action was put on by the global campaign 350.org. Figuring the public is more likely to pay attention to practically naked models than Al Gore (naked or not), the group put together a video of smiling models taking off their clothes because global warming makes them too hot. I'm already skeptical of naked activism, but I think this video is trying to appeal to people who like barely-clothed models. I think they might want to rethink their angle - if global warming causes beautiful people to strip, won't some people think that's a good thing?

Glamour Magazine's November Issue: Plus-Sized Beauties

Glamour magazine learned that it pays to feature so-called plus-sized models in addition to the typical size 0 variety in their pages. (I say so-called because these women look pretty average sized to me!)

They got so many positive reader responses from their nude picture of model Lizzie Miller (sporting a little familiar-looking-to-most women pooch) that they've decided they're going to feature Miller and other curvy models like Crystal Renn, Kate Dillon, and Amy Lemons (shown above) in their November issue. They, too, will be in their birthday suits.

Très Bizarre: Robot Model Walks Japanese Fashion Show

Why force unrealistic standards on models when you can just get a robot to walk down the runway? That's what designer Yumi Katsura did, sending Miim the robot down the aisle in a wedding dress. You can see a picture of Miim here, but I imagine she's creepy-close to the spokes-bot in the commercial below. Spooky.

Fiercest Little Runway Diva

I am both disturbed and impressed by little Diva Davanna, America's Next Tot Model. Talk about owning the runway and smiling with your eyes, legs, arms and, well . . . everything! How many of those gawky, insecure chicks on America's Next Top Model could sashay down the runway (in a freaking bubble, no less!) with this much ferocity and aplomb? Diva Davanna is going to rule the universe one way or another. We're just going to have to get out of her way. (I'm totally gonna practice that thing she does with her arms; I'm not sure on what occasion it could be useful, but it may come in handy somehow!)

Beauty and the Geek: Lawmaker Wants Models Off Tech Visas

International geeks may be able to thank their beautiful counterparts for freeing up about 1,000 H1-B visas. Congressman Anthony Weiner, from New York, wants to end the practice of making foreign models and foreign hi-tech workers compete with each other for a limited number of work visas.

Rep. Weiner wants Congress to create a separate immigration class for models. Oh, and in case you were wondering - foreign supermodels such as Gisele Bundchen already qualify for super O-1 visas, those reserved for immigrants with extraordinary ability, like Nobel Prize winners.

Of course creating a Beautiful People Visa would not solve the HB-1 visa crunch. The 65,000 H-1B visas granted this year were snatched up in one day. Bill Gates told Congress last March that the tight controls force companies to outsource jobs overseas.

When companies, technology or fashion, set up global businesses they're likely to go where they can hire the best, brightest, and beautifulist. Should America do more to fight the brain and beauty drain?

Who Doesn't Want to See Models Falling?

Fashion shows are much more worthwhile when we get to see how the clothes look on the ground, upside down, flying, tumbling, rolling, and so on. In other words, when the models are falling. Picture perfect is nice and all, but a little down-to-earth spontaneity never hurt anyone. Well, it might hurt just a little.

French Parliament Outlaws Thinness

While we all know French women don't get fat, now they might be forbidden by law to appear too thin. The French parliament's lower house passed a controversial bill today that will make it illegal for anyone - that includes fashion magazines, advertisers, and websites - to publicly encourage extreme thinness.

If the bill passes the French Senate, the no-thin law will be the strongest of its kind. The measure was proposed in partial response to the 2006 anorexia-linked death of a Brazilian model. Her death has spurred efforts throughout the international fashion industry to address the impact of glorifying and showing ultrathin models.

The Conservative author of the law went so far as to argue that encouraging anorexia or severe weight loss should be punishable in court. The bill will give judges the power to imprison and fine offenders up to $47,000 if found guilty of "inciting others to deprive themselves of food" to an "excessive" degree. Industry leaders in French couture are opposed to the idea of legal boundaries on beauty standards, and doctors warn that the link between seeing images of extreme thinness and anorexia is hazy at best. The president of the influential French Federation of Couture, said he was not aware how expansive the proposed measure was, but firmly expressed his disapproval of such a sweeping measure.

Never will we accept in our profession that a judge decides if a young girl is skinny or not skinny. That doesn't exist in the world, and it will certainly not exist in France.

Do we need government protection from unhealthy images of thinness? Should ads that encourage anorexia through showing the super skinny, be a crime? Is it the government's duty to ban this kind of speech, or should we be able to filter out negative images for ourselves? Will the ban make for a more hospitable environment?

Model Walks, Skirt Drops

It's not unusual for embarrassing clothing (or shoe!) malfunctions to happen on the runway. For this poor model, it's one of those days. What's even more disturbing is the camera dude's instinctive urge to zoom in when the chick is trying to run out of sight. A close-up of the model's arse is need-to-see "news," eh? Joke Confuses Model

Some punk ass with a mic was in the mood to ridicule (or flirt with) a model, so he pulled this chick aside and told her one of the oldest jokes in the book. She knew the joke was on her, but that's about all she knew. To be fair, she mumbled something about being a stupid model- a wise assessment, indeed! So we'll give the gal points for self-awareness.
