Teaching children about historical figures can be stressful because it's important to provide them with plenty of back story and ample perspective, which is why I rely on books to help me educate my children about weighty subjects. I'm crystal clear on Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s immeasurable legacy and effect on our country and culture, but when my children start asking questions I like to provide them with age appropriate story lines, anecdotes they can relate to and pretty pictures.

With Martin Luther King, Jr. Day coming up now is the opportune time to share Dr. King's dream with your lil one's inquisitive mind. Friends of MLK Gather to Raise Funds For Memorial

In 1996 President Clinton signed a bill proposing the establishment of a Martin Luther King, Jr. memorial. Twelve years later, friends, associates, and admirers of King are still working to raise the $120 million needed to build the memorial.

Yesterday, original civil rights activists gathered on the National Mall at the planned memorial site for a rally. Their goal: to raise the final $18 million so President-elect Obama can dedicate the memorial during his first term. King's memorial will sit between Lincoln's and Jefferson's, and the design pleases King's associates. Clarence Jones, who worked as King's attorney and sometimes speech writer said yesterday: "At some points, I was so welled up in the memories of what the memorial reflected that it really caused me to have quiet tears."

Yesterday, the first family marked the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday with a day of volunteering and a night of celebration. Barack, Michelle, and daughter Malia spent the day at the Browne Education Center, building bookshelves for the library and painting quotes from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. onto the walls. After a day of giving back, Michelle and Barack got dressed up for the Let Freedom Ring Celebration at the Kennedy Center in honor of the civil rights leader.

Today, they'll be celebrating someone else: Michelle herself! The first lady turns 48 today. The president has been asking supporters to send surprise birthday greetings to his wife. As we near the end of October we continue to dig into our favorite reads for National Book Month, support National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and get excited to trick or treat on Halloween. This week was a shaky one, as the Bay Area experienced some earthquakes, Occupy Wall Street went through growing pains, and a handful of celebrities and world leaders made some big announcements. While we were happy to see actor Zachary Quinto come out about his homosexuality and Nicolas Sarkozy and Carla Bruni welcome a baby girl, we were sad to hear that Giuliana Rancic has breast cancer. The Jackie Kennedy Tapes: Diane Sawyer Lets Us Listen

A 1964 taped interview with Jackie Kennedy will be released for the first time tomorrow, some 47 years after it was recorded. In it, the newly widowed former first lady opens up with frank opinions about figures like Martin Luther King Jr. and French leader Charles de Gaulle, while also reminiscing about her marriage. Diane Sawyer will host an upcoming special on the tapes, and she was on The Colbert Report last night to discuss. Before she came out, we got to listen to parts of the interview, and it was more moving to hear Jackie's voice than just read the quotes. Of becoming first lady, Jackie said, "Suddenly everything that had been a liability before - your hair, that you spoke French, that you didn't just adore the campaign, and you didn't bake bread with flour up to your arms - then when we got into the White House all the things that I'd always done, suddenly became wonderful."
