Happy St. Patty's Day, everyone! Since the four-leaf clover is one of this holiday's mascots, I thought it'd be a good time to talk about luck. While luck is really just triumph or failure determined by chance, it seems as though some people have it on their side and some don't. There are those who are typically lucky in love, lucky in their career, and lucky when it comes to taking risks, but then there are those who always seem to get the short end of the stick. Of course we all have our good days and our bad, but tell me, do you consider yourself to be lucky?

Jennifer Aniston sat down with her good friend Oprah yesterday to talk about her December Vogue article, her new movie, and of course, her love life. She went on to squash some of the never-ending rumors, but she also voluntarily stated that she considers herself to be lucky in love, even though it may not look how it's supposed to!

Love is multifaceted and while it's easier for some to find than others, I do think there are certain people that just get lucky in that way. Are you one of them?

In the midst of the only Friday the 13th slated for the year 2008, cross in front of those black cats and shatter those mirrors with abandon - Dutch statisticians have cleared the unlucky rep. They've found that Fridays that fall on the 13th are actually safer than their 51 non-spooky cousins. The study shows that fewer accidents and reports of fire and theft occur on the big day than any other - and they're not sure just why. One statistician said, "I find it hard to believe that it is because people are preventatively more careful or just stay home, but statistically speaking, driving is a little bit safer on Friday 13th." Phew!

Unfortunately the breaking of the curse hasn't extended to everyone - get a load of this luck:

Park Avenue doorman, Richie Randazzo, won $5 million in the lottery - but when he asked to move into the building where he worked, he was still $4.95 million dollars shy of purchasing the only available unit.

Still, the winner is undaunted. “After I hit the next lottery, I’ll buy that one.” Randazzo said at the winner’s ceremony. The doorman purchased a $10 Set for Life instant ticket which pays $5,000 per week and guarantees a minimum of $5 million. He will receive $65,000 every three months or $41,926 after Uncle Sam wins his share.

A bummer (with a silver lining) but it's not as bad as this unlucky dude: a tardy German journalist covering the European football championship tried to delay his flight by making a fake bomb threat. From his traceable cell phone. The ploy didn't work as you might imagine as it's pretty tricky to make a flight when you've been arrested.

Is It Bad Luck For the Bride and Groom to See Each Other Before the Wedding?

Since I'm so traditional, you probably won't be surprised to hear that I consider it bad luck for the bride and groom to see each other before the wedding ceremony. Of course some couples don't believe in that old-wives tale, and I'm sure those that do get a peek or even share a moment together before their walk down the aisle still live happily ever after. I'm just too superstitious to chance it. Are you like me? Do you think it's bad luck for the bride and groom to see each other before saying "I do"?

Happy St. Patrick's Day! Since the four-leaf clover is one of the mascots for this holiday, I thought it would be a good time to talk about luck! I've never considered myself lucky per se, but I know some people who just always have luck on their sides. They nail every job interview, they hit every green traffic light, and they even win big at the blackjack tables. Then there are those who are considered unlucky. They unfortunately have a dark cloud over their heads and everything that can go wrong, does. I think I fall someplace in the middle, but what about you? Do tell: Do you consider yourself to be lucky?

Do Things Happen For a Reason?

I've always felt that things happen for a reason. Whether you're experiencing good times or bad, I feel that there's some sort of hidden lesson or purpose in every circumstance. I learn so much from every experience I go through, and oftentimes I find that I grow and mature the most when something unbearable happens.

So tell me, do you think that things happen for a reason or do you believe more in chance and luck?

Do you believe in luck? Do you have friends that always have luck on their side, people that seem to constantly strike it rich in the casinos for example, or do you know more people that you would consider totally unlucky, aka, when it rains it pours? I am sure we all know both kinds of people, but is there one specific person's luck that you envy? Or do you not even believe in the concept of luck in the first place? Ladies, do tell, what do you think about luck?

Do You Knock on Wood?

Ever since I could remember, I've been "knocking on wood." I learned it from my mother actually - she is an avid wood knocker. It's something we do to prevent something bad from happening. I'll say something like, "I've never gotten pregnant while on the Pill, knock on wood." Or "It looks like it'll be sunny for our BBQ this weekend, knock on wood." And I don't just say "knock on wood," I also find wood and literally knock my knuckles on it. It's definitely one of my superstitions, and in some way, I feel like if I don't do it, I'll have bad luck.

So where did this weird little phenomenon of "knocking on wood" or "touching wood" start anyway? The origin isn't really known, but in the early 1800s, kids used to play a game called "Tiggy-touch-wood," where they had to touch wood in order to be "safe." It could be that the phrase stuck all these years.

I've also heard that people used to "knock on wood" to awaken the kind tree fairies that lived in the woods in addition to preventing the Devil from hearing your bad comments.

I came across a children's book called "Knock on Wood, " so I know I'm not the only one who believes in this, but now I'm curious to know - do you "knock on wood?"

Finding a four-leaf clover means good luck, breaking a mirror brings seven years bad luck, and walking on a crack. . . . Most of us have a few superstitions, and while one, small charm might seem powerful and helpful to you, it might mean nothing to someone else. Even movie stars, whose lives people imagine to be already charmed, find comfort in little objects or other symbols of good fortune.

A number of winners had good-luck charms with them. Freeman carried a silver dollar coin in a velvet box. Eastwood carried ''Flat Stanley,'' a paper cutout that he said was part of his daughter's school project. Blanchett, who kept one of Katharine Hepburn's gloves in a handbag during the Aviator shoot, brought a full champagne flute backstage, saying, ''I've been looking forward to [drinking] this all evening.'' And Jamie Foxx brought his daughter, Corinne, who helped keep him from getting a swelled ego. Do You Throw Salt Over Your Shoulder?

My best friend does it. Her mom does it. I see strangers do it at restaurants, and now I do it too. Whenever a salt shaker falls over and spills, they stand it back up, pick up a pinch of salt, and throw it over their shoulder.

It's one of those obscure superstitions that have been passed down, such as knocking on wood, or not opening an umbrella inside, that we can't help but do. I'm sure many of you are salt throwers too, but do you know where this originated?

It goes back to biblical times when salt was a treasured commodity since it was necessary to use when preserving food. It was even used instead of money. Spilling this prized obsession was almost considered a sac-religious offense, so if you spilled some, throwing salt over your shoulder was aimed to "keep the devil at bay," (just like when you say "bless you" after someone sneezes).

Some people think the salt blinds the devil so he can't see your salt spill mess, or to keep him from sneaking up on you while you're cleaning it up. In order to follow through on this superstition correctly, you must throw the salt over your left shoulder (the "sinister" side) with your right hand (the "good" side).

The people I know who do this (myself included) just do it for good luck. Are there any other things you do for good luck, or maybe to prevent bad luck from happening? Do you even believe in luck? I'm curious to know.
