Happy News! A Group of Teachers Wins the Lottery

In these tough economic times, there's one group of teachers that doesn't have to worry about making ends meet. Fifteen educators in Shasta County, CA hit the $76 million jackpot on Monday!

The team of administrators, teachers, a school nurse, and a psychiatrist have been playing the same numbers for seven years. The winning assistant principal said he's happy to see people who chose careers in education finally strike it rich.

Since a basic understanding of statistics would keep most from playing the lottery, I'm assuming this group doesn't include any math teachers!

And the school won't need to hire an entire new staff right away at least. Most of the winners say they plan to keep their day jobs!

Man Wins Lottery - and His Church Shuns Huge Donation

The chances of winning the lottery rely on a lot of prayer and the immutable laws of statistics, but one such lucky soul bagged a jackpot, and couldn't even give the winnings away. A Florida Lottery jackpot winner took home more than 6 million in cash and was hoping to follow his religion’s tithe commandment - offering 10 percent of his winnings to his church. Unfortunately, his church wanted no part of this money and refused to say exactly why they turned down the $600,000 donation, though many churches don't approve of the lottery or gambling in general.

Other churches, who caught wind of the story were amazed. “I’m against the lottery, but if one of my members won. . . . I wish and hope he would give 10 percent to the church,” said Pastor Dr. Lorenzo Hall of the El-Beth Divine Holiness Church. “We are in the process now of building a youth center, and you would be surprised at the people that can be helped with $600,000.” Hall adds he wouldn't ask where a donation came from and would welcome the lucky-lotto-man's donation anytime.

This has to be the oldest prank in the book, but our boy fell hard for it. While his lovely family stood back and stifled giggles, he did his victory thang. He even cheesed up his hair for a photo. And then he read the fine print. . .

Beau of Woman Stuck on Toilet Wins Lottery Again

If you think the universe is unfair now, wait until you get a load of this update! A while back, a man from Kansas called 911 and said his girlfriend wouldn't leave the loo - in fact, she'd be in there for two years. (Ummm, what?! Ever heard the expression, "Shit or get off the pot?!") Turns out this poor woman had been stuck to the toilet seat for an entire month. (I'll spare you the details.) Anyway, somehow this wonderful boyfriend of hers, in addition to getting only six months probation for misdemeanor mistreatment, managed to win the $20,000 lottery - twice! Ugh. Obama Brand Goes Global Perhaps Lifting American Brand

From Europe to South America to Asia to his father's birthplace in Kenya, Barack Obama's candidacy has made an impact. Black Europeans are pinning their hopes for more representation in their government on a persuasive example set by the election of Barack. Citing his charisma and ideas, black community leaders say his race is not the only reason for the transatlantic support.

Meanwhile, Colombia has adopted a more spirited way to show support - making Obama the mascot of their lottery. Colombia's Metal region placed Obama's face on its Oct. 22 ticket. In a country whose president strongly supports President Bush, the lottery officials explained the mood of the people: "We picked Obama's portrait for our lottery because we're always looking for somebody people are raving about. He's ahead in opinion polls and right now he's the most popular guy around here."

In his NYT's column today, Nicholas Kristof recounts the disbelief a friend in Beijing shared when he told her there's a good chance America will elect a black man president. To see how he explained the potential of an Obama presidency, read more.

We’re beginning to get a sense of how Barack Obama’s political success could change global perceptions of the United States, redefining the American “brand” to be less about Guantanamo and more about equality. In the midst of the only Friday the 13th slated for the year 2008, cross in front of those black cats and shatter those mirrors with abandon - Dutch statisticians have cleared the unlucky rep. They've found that Fridays that fall on the 13th are actually safer than their 51 non-spooky cousins. The study shows that fewer accidents and reports of fire and theft occur on the big day than any other - and they're not sure just why. One statistician said, "I find it hard to believe that it is because people are preventatively more careful or just stay home, but statistically speaking, driving is a little bit safer on Friday 13th." Phew!

Park Avenue doorman, Richie Randazzo, won $5 million in the lottery - but when he asked to move into the building where he worked, he was still $4.95 million dollars shy of purchasing the only available unit.

Still, the winner is undaunted. “After I hit the next lottery, I’ll buy that one.” Randazzo said at the winner’s ceremony. The doorman purchased a $10 Set for Life instant ticket which pays $5,000 per week and guarantees a minimum of $5 million. He will receive $65,000 every three months or $41,926 after Uncle Sam wins his share.

A bummer (with a silver lining) but it's not as bad as this unlucky dude: a tardy German journalist covering the European football championship tried to delay his flight by making a fake bomb threat. From his traceable cell phone. The ploy didn't work as you might imagine as it's pretty tricky to make a flight when you've been arrested.
