John Hughes: Influential Director - and Pen Pal

Director John Hughes, who passed away Thursday at age 59, made a big impact on those of us who grew up watching his films and crushing on his characters. But he made an even bigger impact on Alison Byrne Fields: he was her pen pal.

As she recounts on her blog, We'll Know When We Get There, Fields and Hughes sent letters back and forth between 1985 and 1987, after Alison poured her heart out to Hughes praising The Breakfast Club. Initially, she got a form letter back and wrote Hughes again, chiding him. Find out what happened next.

Best Airline Complaint Letter Ever Written

The following complaint letter to Continental Airlines kvetching about being seated next to the lavatory can only be described as "epic." You can practically smell those yucky blue toilet chemicals that are supposed to make bathroom stench go away but instead intensify the stink. Complete with drawings and writing that Dostoevsky would have tipped his hat to, this letter is also freaking hilarious. I like to call it Notes From Above the Ground. Enjoy. The Love Letter Project Embraces the City of Brotherly Love

What is it with Philadelphia and quirky outdoor art? On the heels of the new documentary In a Dream, about one man's giant mosaic memoir, comes Love Letter, a massive mural project by artist Steve Powers and the City of Philadelphia Mural Arts Program.

The visual love letter plays out across 50 painted walls along Philly's Market Street elevated train. Through the month of August, 40 artists are creating their masterpieces for all to see starting around Labor Day. You can check out the progress so far on the official Love Letter mural. Lost Love Letter, Recovered, Sparks Marriage 17 Years Later

Seventeen years ago, Steve Smith and Carmen Ruiz-Perez fell in love and were engaged in their 20s. After being together for a year in England, where Carmen was a foreign student, their relationship waned and Carmen returned to France.

A few years later, Steve wrote to her hoping they could get back together. Unfortunately, her mother put the letter on the mantelpiece and it slipped behind the fireplace - where it stayed for the next 10 years. During a renovation, the unopened letter was found and Carmen finally read the lines: “'I hope you are well. I was just writing to ask if you ever married and if you ever still thought of me?”

After getting the courage to call him up, still-single Carmen met up with Steve in Paris. It was love (again) at first sight. They married soon after, after 17 years of meeting one another. “I never got married,” said Carmen, “and now I'm marrying the man I have always loved.”

Although Steve’s letter wasn’t exactly a Shakespearean sonnet, his romanticism did the trick, even after ten years. Have you ever received a beautiful love letter?

Have You Ever Received a True Love Letter?

Remember the scene in Sex and the City where Carrie reads her book of love letters aloud to Mr. Big? Well apparently it caught the attention of many, because according to an article yesterday in the Telegraph, fans were inundating book sellers with requests for a copy of Love Letters of Great Men. And in typical movie form, the book didn't exist . . . until now. The British firm Macmillan decided to issue a book filled with excerpts from historical figures using the same name - genius, if you ask me!

This news got me thinking about love letters in general. Since times have so drastically changed, love letters seem to be a thing of the past, as are handwritten letters of any kind. I've been lucky enough to have received a love letter, and it will be something that I'll treasure forever, but what about you? Tell me ladies, have you ever received a true love letter from someone special? If so, tell us about it!

A "Dear John" letter is the quintessential breakup tool if you can’t bear to say goodbye to someone’s face, or at least it used to be back when people wrote letters. With so many outlets for communication these days, if you’re going to back out of the direct breakup, it might just be easier to get him on the phone. But letters and well-written emails can actually be a great way to say what you really want to say to someone. So I wonder, have you ever written a letter to end a relationship?

Good news! Paris is practicing her spelling again, which means that she's written another tell-all letter to the people who claim to like her. (We'll call them "friends" for short.) This time, Paris writes about ~~lying~~ talking to Barbara Walters, discovering that Jesus hottie, and all the "friends" she's made in jail already. Oh, Paris... (Want more? A Prison Letter From Paris

If you don't know already, Paris was sent back to jail on Friday and given a 45 day sentence. What will we ever do without her? Well, have no fear, because the first of her prison letters is here and, to my surprise, the girl's got more than a two-word vocabulary. Dare I say it? Ok, it's hot.
