Director John Hughes, who passed away Thursday at age 59, made a big impact on those of us who grew up watching his films and crushing on his characters. But he made an even bigger impact on Alison Byrne Fields: he was her pen pal.
As she recounts on her blog, We'll Know When We Get There, Fields and Hughes sent letters back and forth between 1985 and 1987, after Alison poured her heart out to Hughes praising The Breakfast Club.

The following complaint letter to Continental Airlines kvetching about being seated next to the lavatory can only be described as "epic." You can practically smell those yucky blue toilet chemicals that are supposed to make bathroom stench go away but instead intensify the stink. Complete with drawings and writing that Dostoevsky would have tipped his hat to, this letter is also freaking hilarious.

Remember the scene in Sex and the City where Carrie reads her book of love letters aloud to Mr. Big? Well apparently it caught the attention of many, because according to an article yesterday in the Telegraph, fans were inundating book sellers with requests for a copy of Love Letters of Great Men. And in typical movie form, the book didn't exist .

A "Dear John" letter is the quintessential breakup tool if you can’t bear to say goodbye to someone’s face, or at least it used to be back when people wrote letters. With so many outlets for communication these days, if you’re going to back out of the direct breakup, it might just be easier to get him on the phone. But letters and well-written emails can actually be a great way to say what you really want to say to someone.

Good news! Paris is practicing her spelling again, which means that she's written another tell-all letter to the people who claim to like her. (We'll call them "friends" for short.) This time, Paris writes about lying talking to Barbara Walters, discovering that Jesus hottie, and all the "friends" she's made in jail already.

If you don't know already, Paris was sent back to jail on Friday and given a 45 day sentence. What will we ever do without her? Well, have no fear, because the first of her prison letters is here and, to my surprise, the girl's got more than a two-word vocabulary.
