What Do Your Grandparents Mean to You?
Aug 6 2008 - 10:00am This morning, Leonardo DiCaprio is mourning the death of his grandmother, who passed away at 93 in her native Germany. Apparently Leo is close to heartbroken, which comes as no surprise, because they had always been very close. As we all know, death is one of life's natural progressions, and for many people, losing a grandparents is their first experience with loss.

I am extremely close to my Grandparents on my Mom's side! If they are not living with my Aunt they ALWAYS live with us. They helped raise me when I was a baby in the Philippines while my Mom came here to America to settle down and start school. They always give me money and support when I need it and I dread the day when they will pass away. I feel terrible for Leo. Sad

*BTW, sorry about the previous 3 comments. I don't know what happened. Puzzled

Unfortunately, I never knew my father's mother and my mother's father. They passed away before I was born. I didn't know my father's father too well, because he babysat us when my sister and I were very young. However, we always had a nice connection. He has Alzheimer's disease, but always remember me. I am close to my mother's mother. She was living with us when we were growing up.

I was extremely close to my father's mother and she passed away when I was 12. I've never been especially close with my Mom's parents but they are great people and I don't have a problem with them. My Dad and his Dad weren't close so I only met him a few times and I'm not close to my Dad's Step-Dad.

Well my paternal grandma lives in Jamaica and I don't see her much, we didn't get along that great but i will be sad when she dies. My maternal grandpa lives in Georgia and I'll be heartbroken when he departs this earth. He's kind and sweet.

My maternal grandma died when my mother was 7 months and my paternal grandpa was never apart of my father's life.

I really don't know my grandparents at all. My Dad's parents live in North Carolina, so I rarely see them (I'm in Ohio). They have like eight children, most of which have had kids. Which means almost all of their family is up here yet they do not like to visit. It's a weird situation that I don't really understand. My mom's dad is still alive, but he is a very very VERY private person. He is a really nice man, but we don't really have a sentimental relationship. My mom's mom died when I was about nine, she had Alzheimer's which was really hard. I hate that I have very few memories of her before she was sick. I really wish I could have been able to know her, because from what I can remember (and the stories I hear) she was a really warm and loving person. For some reason, I feel I would have been able to relate to her.

boo this post depressed me lol.

I don't really know my grandparents. My mom had a falling out with her mom before i was born so i never knew her. Her dad died when she was little.

My dads parents didn't want anything to do with me and my sister. My parents divorced when i was 6 months old and they didn't want to get close to us because they said they were afraid my mom would move us away and they wouldn't get to see us. It's funny because we have lived in the same area our whole lives. Well it's their loss, what a couple of idiots.

My grandparents lived with my family while I was in high school, and though they were quite irritating, I still loved them more than anything. We finally managed to find them a small apartment near where we live, but my grandfather is now in a nursing home due to an accident. It's getting really hard for me to even go see him, he's nothing like the man I remember from my childhood. It's hard to see someone I love so much slowly die. I've gotten to the point that I don't even go visit him, even though I know he's lonely and would love to see me, because inevitably I will end up making myself depressed. I feel awful that I'm being so selfish. I love my grandparents.

I really agree with everything said. Losing my grandparents was the first real loss in my life, and it was made harder by the fact that I was so young and unsure of how to process things, and by the fact that we were extraordinarily close. I miss them now everyday. And I have lost other family members very dear to me, but it's easier to keep going because I understand that I'll never really understand the mechanisms of dying. I think when I was a child the lack of answers and the unfairness of it all was what made it so horrible, lol.

I have the most amazing grandmother (my mom's) who I cannot ever imagine having to live without. We talk multiple times a day, and I love getting to spend time with her. She is almost 87 and is so wise, funny, smart, loving, and even a little b*tchy! She is so determined though... even when we walked around Europe for three weeks straight she never once complained and even offered me her pain pills when I started to whine! haha I love my Grammy (it's official, I'm a bit nerdy!)

I only have the one surviving grandparent, and sadly she and I don't get along very well. She has never accepted or appreciated the granddaughter she's got (she once gave me a Christian weight loss book, in an attempt to convert me AND get me to slim down), she's really racist and ignorant, and she's terribly bitter about everything.

At the same time, even though I don't like her, I can't imagine a world without her.

My dad's parents are insulting, cold people. I avoid them as much as possible.

My mom's mom is the typical Mexican grandma, and I love her. She's always insisting that you eat, and then feeding you even if you said you aren't hungry. Her English is as bad as my Spanish, but we've always had a strong bond. Never met my mom's dad because he died when she was 12, but he means a lot to me because he meant so much to my mom. I wear a ring he gave her when she was a little girl.

My mothers parents I am not too close with. I havnt seen my grandpa since I was probably 14 (im 24 now) and my grandmother is kind of an old hag who makes everyones life miserable, but we all pretend to adore her. Thats not to say that I wont be sad when she passes away, she is still family. On my dads side, my grandpa died when I was 2, my grandmother re-married and he died when I was about 12. That was really hard for me because he treated my sisters and me like we were his own. We spent a few weeks every summer with them and it was great. Some of my favorite memories are of us sitting at the table watching Wheel of Fortune and playing Uno. My dads mom is still alive, but I havnt seen her in a few years, I really need to go visit her. I will probably be devastated when she passes away.

I love my grandmother! She is the only one who is alive and the only one I ever got to know. My grandfather was alive, but he died a few months after I was born. I love my grandmother and I try to be helpful and respectful, but sometimes I just snap and I'm kinda mean. I do apologize and she always forgives me. I try to tell my other sisters and brothers and cousins not to take her time for granted because she is going to be 85 soon. I call her my best friend even though I don't tell her a lot of things. She always makes me laugh even if she hurts me or makes fun of me because her laugh is so contagious. I go out with her when she asks me and we have a lot of fun. She is the best and I know a giant part of me is going to be gone when (if - I live in denial for her. She and David Bowie can't die) she dies.

I'm one of the few members that will sit and listen to her stories and really be interested. I've learned some funny and shocking things about her i never would have thought her doing. She unfortunalety has lung cancer but is doing so well (knock on wood) you wouldnt know to look at her. She only lives five minutes away but i dont visit as much as i should. When i do i come home with bags full of food though, she makes the best curry and apple pie ever...

I work in an old folks home and it disgusts me to see how many people ABANDON their parents/grandparents for somebody else to "deal" with!

Anybody who doesn't visit their parents/grandparents in a home ought to be ashamed of themselves... seriously.

My nan has vascular senile dementia (we think) so she doesn't really know who I am but my grandad still has all of his faculties and they're both 87! Laughing out loud

My grandparents are everything to me! We are very close. I grew up staying over at their house every weekend. My grandma is the best cook. My grandpa always made me work in his garden with him. We vacation together all the time. They are my heroes and my inspiration. I love spending time with them and can't bare to think of life without them...
Still they are old and I know won't be around forever. I just focus on treasuring them now and getting to know them as best I can, while I can.

Mum's side - Both died before I was born
Dad's side - More acquaintances with them, didn't really see them that often myself (my parents do, obviously). My grandma on that side passed away from dementia a few years ago but it wasn't too devastating as she was slowly deteriorating and had been such a feisty spirit before the dementia took hold. Grandpa is currently in a nursing home.

i have a weird relationship grandparent-wise which is why i have avoided this conversation for a little while. my dad's father died when i was young and his mother isn't the most loving person. she is the only real grandparent i have that is still alive. my mom's father cheated on her mother and left her a few years before i was born. she got remarried before i was born and even though my mother's father is still alive i don't consider him my grandfather because he was never there. my grandmother's second husband has been there from day 1, even before him and my grandmother were married, so i consider him my grandfather even though we are not blood related. unfortunately, my grandmother died when i was in the fifth grade.

the thing that really stuck with me was when she showed me her bald head. she wore a wig for a long time but one day she finally showed me her bald head (semi accidentally) and she told me "i am doing all this to see you guys grow up". this has stuck with me my whole life.. the fact that she had that much love for me. i think about her every day and stive to make her proud in every decision i make.

that is what my grandmother is to me. it really stuck out to me this year more than any other because i had 3 roommates who called their grandma's all the time. i have one living grandma but i don't have that relationship with her that i could call her often. i know i would have had that relationship with my grandmother, where i would call her all the time, if she were still alive. so i strive every day to make her proud. and i consider her second husband my grandfather because he is an amazing man.. even though he is not my biological grandfather.

so i guess my point was that some people take their grandparents for granted. be thankful that you can call them or talk to them whenever you want. i only have two grandparents (on opposite sides) that are still alive and i don't have the type of relationship with either of them that i can just call and ask for advice or talk to.
