What's With Men Shooting Way Out of Their League?

Do you ever notice that gorgeous women are always getting hit on by not-so-gorgeous guys? In the movie Knocked Up, this point is illustrated to a T when Ben says, "You're prettier than I am," right before pouncing on Alison.

Although these characters are fictional, this happens all the time, and now there's a study to prove it. No matter how unattractive a guy thinks he is, nothing will stop him from hitting on a woman who looks like she should be on the cover of Elle magazine. In this study, 16,550 people were asked to rate their attractiveness and the looks of the people they date. The researchers discovered that men think appearance is way up there on the scale of importance, more so than women, and their own less-attractive appearance wouldn't stand in their way when it comes to going for a "hottie."

Perhaps this is due to men hoping women are more interested in inner beauty, or maybe male egos have something to do with it too. Whatever the case, the study suggests that eventually, men learn to accept that they most likely won't be able to get a date with an overly beautiful woman, since "The 10s among us, both male and female, want only to date other 10s." But hey, I give these guys credit for trying - you never know what could happen!

Where Do You Stand? Using the Phrase "Knocked Up"

The other day, a married friend called me up and said, "I have good news! I'm knocked up." At first I didn't understand what she was talking about, but then she went into detail about her ultrasound, and I knew she was trying to tell me she was pregnant. The term "knocked up" doesn't really conjure up happy and blissful thoughts to me though. I don't think I'd ever say that I was "knocked up," or refer to someone as "knocked up" since it seems like such a harsh way to announce something so wonderful.

What if it was an unplanned pregnancy, would the term be okay then? In my book, no, it wouldn't, because I just really hate the phrase but what do you think? Do you think the words "knocked up" and "pregnant" are interchangeable, or do you think "knocked up" has negative connotations?

James Franco Goes Apesh*t

In this spoof, James Franco gets all "method actor-y" in a pretend scene on the set of Knocked Up and he and annoyed director Judd Apatow start arguing. Apatow thinks that Franco is still sore that the television show he directed and Franco starred in ("Freaks and Geeks" ) was taken off the air. If that's the case, I feel your pain, man. "Freaks and Geeks" was awesome.

Uh Oh! Counterfeit Condom Factory Discovered in China

Condoms might top the list of things that should never be counterfeited. Unfortunately, there may be as many as one million ineffective knock-off condoms on the market in China right now.

Four people were arrested this week at a factory allegedly producing and selling condoms that provide little to no protection against disease or pregnancy. What's worse? Authorities said they found "bare-chested" employees using vegetable oil to lubricate the condoms that they then packaged without any sterilization. Whoever came up with this fake factory sounds like they were fulfilling some sort of bizarre fantasy.

This story is scary enough to make someone outside of China paranoid. If you're freaked out, just make sure you never buy condoms labeled as "Jisson, Durex. Rough Rider, Six Sense and Love Card."

Have You Ever Had to Use Self-Defense?

I have to admit that I've never taken the time to enroll in a serious self-defense course. Luckily, I've never been in a situation requiring it (knock on wood!), but I think it's about time I sign up!

Knocked Up By A One Night Stand

Dear Sugar
I am a junior in college and I just found out I am pregnant. The father is a guy that I had a one night stand with. I am not a promiscuous girl and this was the first time I have ever been with a stranger. At the beginning of the night we exchanged phone numbers, and he seemed like someone I would want to go out with, but when we woke up it was really uncomfortable.

We shared an awkward glance and we didn't even really talk. Within five minutes of being awake, he quickly got dressed and he left without even so much as a warm goodbye. To be honest, I barely remember him. If not for the name and number on the crumpled up bar napkin that was in my jeans pocket, I may not even have remembered his name.

It has been three and a half weeks and he has not called me. I know I need to explore my options immediately as I certainly wasn't planning on this pregnancy. I obviously don't know this guy, but since I do have his phone number, is it my obligation to contact and consider him before I make a decision about this pregnancy on my own? One Night Stand Sophie

This is a very personal decision that only you can make. Have you reached out to any of your friends or family members so that you are not alone in your decision making process? If you are struggling and you don't want to involve anyone that you know personally, I suggest going to a school counselor and talking to someone there for an objective opinion.

We are lucky to live in a society, where woman have many options when it comes to unplanned pregnancy. If talking to a school counselor is still too close for comfort then a great place to research family planning choices and birth control (for the future) is at Planned Parenthood. This free or low cost center can help educate and mentor you during this difficult time.

Since you technically don't know your one night stand, I think that you have complete freedom in making the choice of whether to tell him or not to tell him about the pregnancy. Having his phone number makes it easy to contact him, but by no means requires you to tell him.

Talking to him might make things a little more clear for you but if your decision is to not tell him, again, that choice is yours. You must do what you feel is right so that this decision doesn't come back to haunt you. Remember that you have options so please consider all of them. Good luck.

Love Hotels Do Brisk Business in Japan

Young and in love (or lust?) with no place to knock boots? If you have extra cash and live in Japan, there are a multitude of love hotels available for trysting - even a Titanic themed hotel for those who believe their love will go on.

There are about 25,000 love hotels in Japan and even in a bad economy, business is booming. They offer rooms by the hour, with underground parks and entrances and screens to shield visitors’ license plates if they so wish. Yes, love hotels can be places for illicit meetings with prostitutes or adulterers, but more often than not, they offer Japanese couples who may be living in close quarters with their families a place they can go for some private we time.

Yuichi Ito, a twenty-something living with his parents, explains why he frequents them: "My family is my Dad and my Mom, and I have two younger brothers. But we only have four rooms, so it is a very crowded house."

With typical Japanese whimsy, love hotels are often themed - couples can dress up as nurses and doctors, play with bondage toys, or stay in rooms that look like classrooms or trains.

Foreign investors are looking to swoop in on the love hotel action, especially since big Japanese corporations find them too seedy to be associated with. British businessman Steve Mansfield already runs six of them - and wants to run more. Rebranding them is in order, though. He refers to them as "leisure hotels."

Say What? Letterman Apologizes to Palin

"I told a bad joke. I told a joke that was beyond flawed, and my intent is completely meaningless compared to the perception . . . So I would like to apologize, especially to the two daughters involved, Bristol and Willow, and also to the governor and her family and everybody else who was outraged by the joke. I'm sorry about it and I'll try to do better in the future."

David Letterman apologized again last night on his show for a series of sexist and crass jokes about Sarah Palin and her daughter last week. First, he described Sarah Palin as having a "slutty flight attendant look." Next, thinking her 18-year-old daughter Bristol was at a Yankees game (in fact it was 14-year-old Willow), Letterman joked that in the seventh inning she got "knocked up" by Alex Rodriguez. Letterman admitted that, ultimately, even if Bristol had been at the game, the joke was not acceptable.

I have to say, it's refreshing to know that sexist humor will get called out. (There were protests outside his studio, contributing, no doubt, to his need for an on-air apology.) I wonder if this public outcry signals an increasing intolerance for low-blow sexism, or is this politics piggybacking on an issue that people are actually immune to?
