While the nightly headlines might not be so optimistic, things are looking up for Katie Couric and CBS. On the tails of her Sarah Palin interview this Summer, Katie has secured a Grammy special, and the first interview with US Airways pilot Chelsey "Sully" Sullenberger. Meanwhile, ratings for the CBS Evening News are on the rise. Last year, it was almost impossible to find pro-Katie news out there. But now, experts speculate that Katie's warm presence makes her the perfect anchor for these tough times.

SNL was almost wall-to-wall politics last night, with an ersatz debate match-up, a faux Bill Clinton making an appearance on "Weekend Update," and this spoof on the Palin/Couric interview from earlier this week. Compare it to the original and see what you think - did they nail it? Or do you wish there was a joke where the punchline wasn't "Sarah Palin?"

Is it Possible to Be President and Not Lie to Americans?

Who's a liar, liar pants-on-fire? Neither candidate apparently, according to answers given to Katie Couric as part of her "Presidential Questions" series. Couric asked last night, "Describe a situation when you think it's appropriate to lie to the American people." Here's what the candidates had to say:

Obama said of his truthiness policy, "You can put together a hypothetical where there is a national security emergency that is imminent, and you don't want to provide, for example, the location of our troops. You don't have to lie in those situations, you simply say, 'we're not answering questions.' I don't think it's appropriate to lie." He goes on to say he wants to change the "fudging" and the soft lies culture in Washington. Do you think the above description counts in this category?

McCain says he can't think of any real or logical scenario where he would feel compelled to lie to the American people, and when probed on the national security hypothetical, he says, "But if you deceive the American people and you want their support and you want them to beat back this national security challenge and you don't tell them the truth about it, then I think they become disillusioned. That's happened in the past." Hmm. I wonder how far "past?" It sounds so familiar. . .

We See Katie Couric on Our First Look Inside Pepsi Center

After passing the Secret Service's security screening, we made it into the Pepsi Center. Seeing the TV news boxes, each state's delegation seating assignment, the bright lights of the megapodium, and Katie Couric filming live made our excitement for all the action palpable.

Girl Power? Couric Claims Sexism More Common Than Racism

In the fight for girl power, three women have jumped into the ring in the past 24 hours with very different viewpoints. Katie Couric, in Israel covering Obama's world tour made this striking proclamation:

I find myself in the last bastion of male dominance, and realizing what Hillary Clinton might have realized not long ago: that sexism in the American society is more common than racism, and certainly more acceptable or forgivable.

Sexism trumps racism? So what's a girl to do? Oh! I know! We'll ask Brooke Hogan (of the dubiously-named Brooke Knows Best) what the role for women should be! Here's her take:

I think it's kind of crazy that a woman is running because I think that women deal with a lot of emotions and menopause and PMS and stuff. Like, I'm so moody all the time, I know I couldn't be able to run a country, because I would be crying one day and yelling at people the next day, you know?

Surely a gal has to be Wonder Woman to exist in both realms, fighting for a world where woman can and should be allowed to do it all, amid the utterings of a generation of Brooke Hogans who glimpsed the dream of equality and said, "nah." This Townhall column, taking on last weekend's NOW National Conference said the leaping-tall-buildings motif is exactly where the so-called fight for women's rights gets it wrong:

The superhero analogy demonstrates the destructive attitude dominating feminism today. It is the attitude that everyone is against women, out to get them. To feminists, women must take on the entire world. They must save everyone, even sometimes from themselves. Like Superwoman, these feminists are constantly fearful that they will find an enemy, like sexism, around every corner.

Are feminists fighting just for the sake of fighting? Katie Couric may be right, studies are still being released showing the prominence of gender discrimination - but how should the battle be fought? If sexism is a foe bigger than racism, comments like Hogan's do nothing to advance the cause. At the same time, perhaps Hogan's comments exist precisely because so much progress has been made. Those who aren't oppressed, don't feel the need to fight against it. And then there's the question of the fight. Is calling attention to inequity, simply creating a self-fulfilling prophecy? Do women now, or will they ever have equal rights? Should they?

Why Are People So Anti-Katie Couric?

It's almost impossible to find pro-Katie news out there recently - now it seems she might be in a couple of pots of hot water. Civil rights groups are on the anchor's case after the news program she helms ran what they're calling a report that was inaccurate and crass - and much like something they say Lou Dobbs would run.

Politico says this of the controversy:

The CBS newscast that carries her name recently aired a one sided and inaccurate report about illegal immigrant women who give birth to their children in the United States. The news story challenged the broader constitutional law of birthright citizenship and stated - without providing the correct context - that the births cost US taxpayers millions of dollars annually.

The original report makes this claim though a series of questions and answers from two different people that suspiciously arranges the information to prove the argument. Take a peek and see if you think it's one sided and innaccurate.

Given new reports out that show CBS Evening News's ratings are the lowest they've been in the history of ratings, is reporting like this to blame? How did the Today show darling tank the news? Are people just inexplicably anti-Katie?

Is Your Favorite Anchor Loved by Liberals?

I've always suspected - since it's nearly impossible to be completely neutral - that some news jockeys are a scootch partisan. After all, one errant blink, and bam! Branded. Even Liberty and I have our favorites: She hearts Chris Matthews, and I'm hopelessly devoted to Wolf Blitzer - even though he has a nasty habit of saying, "this is interesting . . ." and then following up with something that's, uh, not interesting. But I forgive. Relationships are hard work.

Those crafty kids at Gawker graphed the approval ratings of over twenty news anchors, from Katie Couric to Rush Limbaugh, based on political party. Of course Democrats hate Rush Limbaugh, but get this: Republicans don't actually like him with a reciprocal intensity. And how do the three big winners, Charlie Gibson, Brian Williams, and Anderson Cooper, manage to be loved by all? Alas, our poor Chris Matthews and Wolf Blitzer didn't fare so well. How did your favorite anchor measure up? Do you watch that anchor precisely because you feel like he/she agrees with you?

We've been tallying up the votes of your favorite 2008 moments, and now it's time for the best Lighten Up. And gosh, you know, one moment really shored up the votes.

Nearly half of you - 47 percent - voted for Tina Fey and Amy Poehler's impression of Sarah Palin's interview with a frustrated Katie Couric. Jon Stewart's defense of fake America and the roast of John McCain and Barack Obama were distant seconds. And there was one maverick out there that voted for Sarah Palin, the Disney movie trailer.
