It's a big day for people who write articles that get awards — the day the 2009 Pulitzer Prizes are announced. (The Pulitzer Prize is considered the highest national honor that can be bestowed to newspaper journalists, literary writers, and composers.) This year all the hoo-hah is over what won instead of who.
So what did win?

Slate ran a useful piece this week looking at all the mistakes the press made in its reporting on the Mumbai massacre. Inconsistencies involved the nationalities of the killers (some were British citizens?), the planning of the assault (did the attackers visit Mumbai to spy?), and the targets of the attacks (Americans and Brits, Mumbai's luxury hotels, or anyone and everyone?). The author even takes issue with the fact that multiple publications provided different spellings of the lone remaining gunman Kasab.

When I came across these photos, I couldn't believe my eyes. Yesterday on Fox and Friends, Fox News aired photos of New York Times reporters, calling them "attack dogs." In the photos, reporters Jacques Steinbert and Steven Reddicliffe became the victims of yellow teeth, a receding hairline, and exaggerated features.

I've written in a journal (what I decided to call my diary after the 5th grade!) since I was a wee girl. I'd write poetry, observations about classmates, and complaints about life in general. (I was way Emo.)
If I stacked all the journals I've kept since I started, they would reach the ceiling.

For many of us, a journal becomes a safe and neutral place to really be ourselves and to reveal our most private thoughts. If you were to find a lost journal on the street, which celebrity's most intimate secrets would you want to read about? Whose private life would read like a page-turner for you?

One of the most convincing arguments for passing the public health plan without abortion coverage is that very few women use insurance to cover abortions to begin with. But if you've heard the statistic that only 13 percent of abortions are billed to insurers, that's not exactly the whole truth.
The Guttmacher Institute, the pro-choice organization responsible for the study the stats were pulled from, contests the 13 percent statistic has been taken out of context and widely used through the media — like, say, in the Wall Street Journal article we linked to yesterday.

The initial reaction to the Stupak amendment — which forbids coverage for abortion from a public insurance plan and prevents private insurers from covering abortions for anyone getting a tax credit — was not anger for many women, but "What? Health insurance covers abortions?!"
Looking into the issue, the Wall Street Journal found that eliminating abortion coverage would have almost no effect because so few women use insurance for the procedure.
