Jon Stewart: How Could Senators Vote Against Antirape Bill?

Senator Al Franken recently sponsored the Franken Anti-Government-Contractor Rape Liability Bill. The legislative amendment states that the US government will not hire companies who make employees sign a contract saying that they will not sue if they are raped by other employees.

Franken was prompted by a female employee of a Halliburton subsidiary who was gang-raped by her co-workers in Iraq. She could not press criminal charges because it happened out of US jurisdiction, and she could not sue, because the fine print in her employment contract waived that right.

Franken's amendment should put an end to such atrocities, but not all members of the Senate were on board. The final vote was 68-30 in favor. Jon Stewart wants to know: how is anyone against this? Jon Stewart Calls Out Obama on Don't Ask, Don't Tell

On last night's show, Jon Stewart pondered whether gay people frighten Americans more than terrorists. Why else would Obama stall the repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell (DADT), turning away openly gay Americans ready to fight for the country?

The official word from the Obama administration is that they have too much on their plates right now to figure out how to let gay Americans serve in the military. Jon thinks this a bogus excuse, and points out that Obama continually made promises as a candidate to make repealing DATD a priority.

Perhaps surprisingly, DADT has been shown to have a greater impact on women. A 2007 report revealed that although women make up only 14 percent of Army personnel, 46 percent of those discharged under DADT were women.

Jon Stewart to Bill Clinton: Are You Batman?

Just like Jon Stewart, I was wondering what the heck must have gone through Bill Clinton's mind when he met North Korea's Kim Jong Il with hopes of securing the release of journalists Laura Ling and Euna Lee. Well last night, the former president chatted with Jon about the whole ordeal. My favorite part came when Jon asked Bill about his role as Batman, since, you know, Clinton acts as an international superhero these days. Clinton revealed that he prefers to think of himself as a character from a James Bond movie. Check out the clip!

Jon Stewart: Most Trusted News Person Among Neocons?

There's evidence that Jon Stewart is not just the most trusted person in news among laughing liberals. In a recent New York magazine article, neoconservative pundits says they too love the fake-news anchor for his intellectual curiosity.

Republican national-security hawk Cliff May was pleasantly surprised when he appeared as a guest on the program notorious for its cracks against the Republican party. In fact May said he had one of the best discussions on torture he'd ever had. And although former ambassador to the UN John Bolton probably holds a worldview opposite of Stewart's, he has warm feelings for the comedian, too. Bolton, who received a friendship bracelet from Stewart last time he was on, told New York:

He always gives you a chance to answer, which some people don't do. He's got his perspective, but he's been fair. In general, a lot of the media, especially on the left, has lost interest in debate and analysis. . . . Stewart fundamentally wants to talk about the issues.

It's amazing that a staunch conservative like John Bolton can come on The Daily Show and discuss how a military strike against Iran is a good thing just minutes after Jon Stewart presents the segment So You Think You Can Douche blasting Bolton's fellow Republicans. And it's all done on Comedy Central to boot!

Jon Stewart Picks on South Carolina

When Time Magazine asked the question - "Now that Walter Cronkite has passed on, who is America's most trusted newscaster?" - the number one answer was ~~journalist~~ comedian Jon Stewart. Brian Williams came in second place, followed by Charlie Gibson and Katie Couric.

I can't say I'm that surprised. Using humor, The Daily Show manages to cut through all the BS and present a picture much closer to reality than the one we see on traditional news programs these days. And Jon does have the benefit of being free from a major news network with major rules and relationships to keep in order.
