Karl Rove and Joe Biden in a War of Words

"I'm rubber and you're glue!" Well Karl Rove didn't exactly say that to Joe Biden, but he did call him a "blowhard" and a "liar." Ouch!

Earlier this week the vice president recalled an encounter he had with President Bush. He said Bush told him "Well, Joe . . . I'm a leader." And Joe responded: "Mr. President, turn around and look behind you. No one is following."

Well Rove says it ain't so Joe. And he's Bush's brain, so he should know. Going on Fox News, Rove tried to set the record straight: "It didn't happen. It's his imagination. It's a made-up, fictional world. He ought to get out of it and get back to reality.” Rove also dropped the "blowhard" and "liar" labels, too.

Politicians Roast Obama Behind His Back at Gridiron Dinner

VIP politicians and journalists got together to poke fun at President Obama behind his back last Saturday, at the annual Gridiron Dinner. But it's not like the Prez wasn't invited! Obama was the first president in decades to skip the Gridiron Club dinner during his first year in office. He opted instead for a quiet trip to Camp David with his family.

Here are some highlights from the "off the record" fun:

Joe Biden: Axelrod really wanted me to do this on teleprompter -but I told him I'm much better when I wing it. I know these evenings run long, so I'm going to be brief. Talk about the audacity of hope. President Obama does send his greetings, though. He can't be here tonight - because he's busy getting ready for Easter. He thinks it's about him.

Biden: Now let's see: we have a Republican speaker who was born in Austria, and tonight's Democratic speaker was born in Canada. Folks, this is Lou Dobbs' worst nightmare.

Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm: (Sarah Palin) really set back the cause of hot governors. You know where I'm coming from, Ed Rendell.

Arnold Schwarzenegger: You (the media) did such lovely work for (Obama). You put your lives on hold to put him in the White House. Now you get all dressed up, the champagne's on ice, and you find out he's just not that into you.

Picture It: Biden Fails to Make Amtrak Event Less Dull

Joe Biden and John Kerry held an event today at Union Station, announcing that Amtrak will receive $1.3 billion in funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to expand passenger rail capacity. Biden said, "For too long, we haven't made the investments we needed to make Amtrak as safe, as reliable, as secure as it can be. That ends now."

Biden: Obama Might, Possibly, Could Explain Iraq Plan Friday

Joe Biden hit the morning-show circuit today, as well as an Ash Wednesday service presumably, following up on the president's message to Congress. Obama spent most of his time talking about the economy. But Biden came through with a foreign policy tidbit. He said that Obama plans to make an announcement about troop withdrawals from Iraq soon, possibly by Friday.

Yesterday news leaked that Obama would keep troops in Iraq longer than he initially promised. Rumor has it that he will have combat troops in Iraq until August 2010, three months later than promised during the campaign. As many as 50,000 support troops would likely remain past that date.

Even so, on the Today show Biden said: "I think the American public will understand exactly what we’re doing, and I think they’ll be pleased. We’re keeping a campaign commitment."

I guess we'll have to save our pleasure for later this week, when we can (probably) expect the details!

Defending Her Title: It's Dr. Jill Biden to All of Us

Michelle Obama may get all the attention, but there's one thing that stands out about Jill Biden. Doctor always precedes her name.

I've actually thought about the title at little to moderate length before - certainly enough to be embarrassed! She has a PhD in education, so shouldn't she be Jill Biden, PhD? No, that would sound weird. I always called my college professors Dr. - Even the art ones! So maybe it's not that weird. But Michelle Obama is a lawyer, and we don't call her Attorney or Michelle Obama Esquire. Though the latter suits her.

In the end, Jill Biden is called Dr. Jill Biden because she asks to be. Joe Biden liked to joke on the campaign trail that she went back to school at 55 because she was sick of seeing mail addressed to Sen. and Mrs. Biden. Ugh. Say it ain't so Joe!

The request may actually serve a purpose in academia, where sexism exists in more than just the books. A professor at University of Southern California's Center For Education said that male academics are more likely to be called doctor by colleagues while women are often addressed by their first names.

So what is Dr. Biden's request? Accurate? Smug? Feminist? Or totally irrelevant?

Obama and Biden Welcome Labor Unions Back to White House

This morning President Obama signed three executive orders intended to "reverse many of the policies towards organized labor that we’ve seen these last eight years, policies with which I’ve sharply disagreed.” The president maintained that a strong labor union is key to America's economic recovery.

The orders make it harder for federal contractors to discourage union activity, require federal contractors to inform employees of their rights, and ensure that qualified workers already on the job keep their positions when contracts change hands.

While hosting labor leaders at the White House ceremony, Obama and Vice President Biden also discussed the first meeting held by the administrations special task force set up to discuss middle class issues, like healthcare and education. The middle class task force has its own website, where the public is invited to discuss the issues and government action.

Jon Stewart on Biden, Star Wars, and Obama's STFU Face

Oh, man. President Obama had better remind Joe Biden that he's vice president now and not doing corny stand-up at Caroline's Comedy Club. Last week while swearing in the senior staff members, VP Biden made a joke about his memory not being as good as Chief Justice John Robert’s. (You remember him, the guy who flubbed the inaugural oath during Obama's swearing-in ceremony.) Whoops. Inappropriate. Jon Stewart, of course, is there to mock Biden, and to introduce us to a face I hope we don't see a lot of: Obama's STFU face. Eek!
