Back in the day, you could still pretend you weren't home by turning your answering machine on. The folks who created this ad understood that you might not want to stress over taping your own greeting, though. Enter "Crazy Calls," pre-recorded machine jingles conveniently available on a cassette tape(!) With lyrics like "Nobody's Home!" to Beethoven's 5th, and "Call Me If You Can-Can," your friends and family would probably look forward to calling and not reaching you. George Constanza knows what I'm talking about.

This year, they're jazzing Christmas up with a little Hava Nagila, and "What Child Is This" sounds l like it was adapted from Fiddler on the Roof. The Jingle Cats don't discriminate - a cute little dog gets a cameo barking solo. I finally feel the holiday spirit - thanks little furry guys! (I especially love the cat at the beginning who sings out of the side of his mouth like a grumpy old man.)

1960s United Airlines Ad: Bring Your Wife, Get a Discount

Advertising from the '60s has a bad rap for always being targeted to men. Mad Men proved this last Sunday when Peggy says a beautiful woman throwing herself at a camera is not going to sell diet soda to its audience - women. Don replies, you know how this works: men want her, so women want to be her.

But this ad is really for the ladies! "Take me along - if you love me!" badgers the jingle while housewives magically change from dowdy house dresses to fun, stewardess-like ones. And it doesn't just sell a dream, it sells a discount. "If you take your wife along on United," the commercial says, "we'll give you up to one-third off her fare." It's like she's a child.
