You Asked: Should I Hock My Jewelry?

Dear Sugar,
I just got out of a ten year relationship and I feel great. Fortunately/unfortunately, I received some beautiful jewelry from my now ex. I have tried to give it back to him, but he said it's all mine to keep but I don't want to wear any of it as I am trying to start my life post-ex and don't need a pink sapphire given by Mr. X glaring at me every time I look at a new suitor!

I have decided to consign the pieces but have no idea how to go about it. I live in Los Angeles and I know there must be some fabulous jewelry consignment stores around. I have looked all over the Internet and asked around but nobody seems to have any ideas except eBay. Can you help? - I Want it Gone Wendy

Dear I Want it Gone Wendy,

Before you sell all your jewelry, I want you to make sure you are 150 percent certain of your decision. I am sure that right now the pieces given to you by your ex seem like negative reminders of him, but later down the road, once you've moved on, are you going to wish you had kept those mementos? Once they're gone, they're gone, so don't make any rash decisions.

Since I'm not from LA, I don't have any particular stores in mind to suggest, but if I were you I'd go to my local jeweler and ask them if they buy consignment jewelry themselves. If they don't, I would ask them for their recommendations as a professional will be able to point you in the right direction so you aren't taken for a ride. The downfall with consignment stores is that they will most likely take a cut of the sale price, so eBay or Craigslist might be a better option for you since you can name your price and be in charge of who is your buyer.

Whatever you decide to do with the jewelry, I hope you get the closure you need. Good luck.

Before you clean your jewelry, make sure there are no loose stones or settings
For diamonds, gold and gem stones, use a nonabrasive cleaner, which can be purchased at any jewelry store or a simple mixture of mild soap and warm water will do the job just as well
Dip your jewelry into either solution and use your fingers to wipe your pieces clean. Rinse with warm water, and I highly advise you to plug your sink just to be safe!
Buff dry with a soft cloth until sparkly clean!
For silver pieces, simply use a nonabrasive silver polish. Dab the polish on a soft cloth and wipe your jewelry clean
Keep in mind that the more you wear your silver jewelry, the less tarnished it will get
Do not get pearls wet - it's best to wipe them with a damp cloth
Jewelry designer Temple St. Clair has a great home remedy that she swears by to clean her precious gold, platinum, silver, and gem stone pieces: mix 1/4 tablespoon of ammonia with 1/2 tablespoon of mild dishwashing soap. Soak the jewelry for a few minutes and gently polish with a soft bristled toothbrush and rinse clean
Rumor also has it that Windex works wonders when shining up your diamond ring

I'm a big believer in the less-is-more principle. Layering together too much jewelry tends to look cheap and tacky
Keep jewelry simple and classic if you work in a conservative office, when attending a business dinner or a funeral. Too much embellishment draws unwanted attention
If you wear an elaborate necklace, keep your earrings simple; choose small, classic hoops or stay elegant with a pair of demure studs
Dangle earrings remain fashionable, but be sure they don't overpower your face and frame
Rings on every finger is so seventh grade. Stacking is okay, but limit yourself to 1 or 2 jeweled-fingers per hand
Go ahead and mix your metals! Sugar office consensus: it's fashionable and chic
Long necklaces are very trendy right now, but remember to wear simple tops if you're going heavy on the necklaces. As a rule of thumb, never wear more than 3 strands
Bracelets spice up a t-shirt or tank top. Following the less-is-more rule, opt for one big chunky piece or a set of bangles, never both

If you're in front of the mirror and doubting your accessories, take one thing off; that's the right thing to do 98% of the time. Besides, as long as your most visible accessory is your confidence, I know you'll look stunning!

Is it just me, or are they jacking J.T.'s "D*ck In A Box" concept? That is, "On this very special occasion, give the gal you love the gift that'll go the distance. Give her the gift of wood." Lame.

Madeleine Albright Had Her Diplomatic Message Pinned Down

As secretary of state, Madeleine Albright could use carrots and sticks to further the US foreign policy agenda. But as the first woman to serve as top diplomat, Albright also used broaches to get what she wanted! In her new book, Read My Pins, Albright explains how her jewelry box turned out to be one of her greatest arsenals.

Albright discovered the power of the pin back when she was the US ambassador to the UN. After the Iraqi government called her an "unparalleled serpent," Albright decided to make a fashion diplomatic statement by wearing a snake pin the next time she met Iraqi officials.

In the description for her book, we get a taste of how broaches went on to become Albright's signature as secretary of state.

International leaders were pleased to see her with a shimmering sun on her jacket or a cheerful ladybug; less so with a crab or a menacing wasp. Albright used pins to emphasize the importance of a negotiation, signify high hopes, protest the absence of progress, and show pride in representing America, among other purposes.
