January Must-Haves!

2008 has finally arrived so let's all start off the new year on the right foot. It's easy to feel a little post-holiday depression so be sure to check out my January must-haves to help keep you energized and your spirits high.

Relax and help ward off sickness by getting a eucalyptus massage.
Plan a ski trip with your friends. Not only will you have a chance to be active and outdoors, but it will give you something to look forward to.
Join a gym and start working out with a personal trainer to help you make goals for a better you in 2008.
If you suffer from seasonal affective disorder, buy yourself a sun lamp to ensure you get the appropriate amount of bright light, which can help with depression.
Take painting or drawing class at your local community center or college to help wake up your creative side.

The Presidential Inauguration Is Brought to You by . . .

In 2005, President Bush used $42.8 million from corporate sponsors to fund his inauguration. With only $9.74 million of public money at his disposal, and rules against using money left over from the general election for transition, President-elect Obama must renew fundraising efforts for his January 20th move-in date.

Obama is having a tough time avoiding corporate money, according to CNN. Since many of Obama's everyday American supporters struggle to get by, it's hard to ask them to donate to the transition cause now that their candidate already won. In contrast, wealthy corporations looking to get in good with the new President eagerly offer contributions. Ultimately, Obama may accept corporate cash, but with new and tighter restrictions.

Would you give to the Obama inauguration effort if you knew it would diminish corporate influence, or should the new President stay within the relatively meager public budget (if that's even possible)?

McCain on Warrantless Wiretapping: Where Does He Stand?

McCain believes President Bush's warrantless wiretapping program is legal, according to one of McCain's top advisers. Bush justifies the program based on an unprecedented assertion of executive power, sure to be a legacy of his administration. McCain now appears to embrace this interpretation.

In a letter to the National Review McCain-insider Douglas Holtz-Eakin, wrote:

[N]either the administration nor the telecoms need to apologize for actions that most people, except for the ACLU and trial lawyers, understand were constitutional and appropriate in the wake of the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001.

Going back in time, I found that in January 2006, McCain told Fox News that he was against the spying program. When asked by Mike Wallace whether Bush had the authority to engage in warrantless wiretapping, McCain said:

You know, I don’t think so, but why not come to Congress? We can sort this all out. I don’t think - I know of no member of Congress, frankly, who, if the administration came and said here’s why we need this capability, that they wouldn’t get it. And so let’s have the hearings.

The NY Times also reports that just six months ago, McCain opposed the Bush view he seems to endorse now.

I'm not sure how McCain's recent tendency to turn towards the Republican base, and away from his previous distaste for Bush's surveillance and interrogation tactics will play out. Must McCain adopt Bush's unique constitutional theory to relay his tough-on-terrorism message? Where do you hope John McCain stands on this issue?

Undressing Hillary's Wardrobe: Hot or Not?

Hillary Clinton takes some heat for her sunny pantsuits. Today, the UK Guardian featured a piece titled: "Why Does Hillary Clinton wear such bad clothes?" The article explains that Hillary walks the line between being dangerously sexy and looking like a tedious maternal nag.

These considerations may have prompted Hillary to opt out of a spread in January's Vogue, and incur the displeasure of Anna Wintour who said: "The notion that a contemporary woman must look mannish in order to be taken seriously as a seeker of power is frankly dismaying."

Still, not all female politicians are criticized. Tim Gunn thinks Nancy Pelosi is pretty fierce, and Condi Rice, who rocks a mean power suit, has even made an appearance in Vogue.

Suits are boring. Period. Therefore, I tend to think that attacks on Hillary's style are often cloaked attacks on her figure and by extension her gender. These critiques don't apply to male candidates. Is it possible to celebrate femininity while conveying power? Even if it's unfair that women have to consider style, do you think Hillary would benefit politically from a makeover?

Ingrowns Are A B*tch

Dear Sugar
Being a woman sometimes is a total bummer. All of the waxing, plucking, and tweezing, oh my! I feel like a dog who goes for various weekly grooming appointments. I have a horrible time shaving my bikini line because of razor burn and all of my painful and not to mention ugly ingrown hairs.

I went the waxing route a few times which was not as painful as I had expected, but how do you maintain a smooth bikini line between waxes? It seems pretty weird that you have to let it full grow out for so many weeks. I am going to be in a bathing suit this January and was wondering if you had any tips for me. Razor Burn Brooke

Maintaining a perfect bikini line is no small feat. Different methods work for different women so trial and error might be in store for you. Many women suffer from sensitive skin and ingrown hairs. Shaving is sometimes the worst culprit of those nasty ingrowns, but making sure you exfoliate the area will lower the chances of trapping hair under the skin.

Tend Skin is a fantastic product that works wonders soothing the skin after any type of hair removal. Waxing can sometimes wreak havoc on the area as well. If you have coarse hair, ingrowns can be worse when taking the hair out from the root. Sticking with one method is a must so keep away from the razor in between waxes.

Schedule your appointments every three weeks and with time, your hair will grow back thinner and thinner. I am also a big fan of Laser Hair Removal / Electrolysis. Although it is a bit more pricey, you will never suffer from ingrowns again. The whole process takes about seven to nine months, a treatment every six weeks, and you will be hair free forever.
