When a Lie Makes Sex Rape

An Israeli court convicted a Palestinian man of rape after having otherwise consensual sex with a Jewish woman under the pretense that he was also Jewish. The 30-year-old Arab man will serve 18 months in prison for "rape by deception." When the two had met in downtown Jerusalem, the man introduced himself as a Jewish bachelor looking for a serious relationship - later that night, well before they could enter a serious relationship, the two had sex in a nearby building.

If simply lying about yourself in order to have a one-night stand is rape, then How I Met Your Mother's Barney Stinson, and countless other real people, are rapists. Most women assume that when they go to bed with someone they just met, they might not have the whole story. What if you go to bed with a guy who pretends to be more successful than he really is? It seems that in the Israeli case, the fact that the man lied about his ethnicity and religion make the lie worse. But should it?

Bar Refaeli in Hot Water Over Her iPad

Good news recently came for tech-savvy Israel-bound travelers, as the country lifted its ban on iPads, finding that they don't actually pose a threat to the country's wireless communications. However, that doesn't mean it's stopped keeping a watchful eye on tablets making their way past the border. Just ask supermodel Bar Refaeli, who found out firsthand.

The Sports Illustrated model was slapped with a fine for not declaring her iPad to customs agents during a recent trip to Tel Aviv. Bar apparently was working in the country for a short time and had packed her iPad in a piece of luggage that was lost in transport. The fine? A whopping $170. Both Bar and boyfriend Leonardo DiCaprio are quite familiar with the customs process in the country, as they've often been spotted visiting Bar's family and hometown landmarks, but it's possible that Bar wasn't aware of the customs drama that surrounded the tablet last month.

iPads Are Now Free to Travel in Israel

After a surprising ban, the Associated Press is reporting that Israel has lifted the ban on iPads. Initially, Israeli officials were concerned about the device and wanted to wait until it was deemed appropriate by their standards before selling them in the country. Now, after conducting "intensive technical scrutiny in a controlled laboratory," the devices are allowed into the country.

Since the international launch of the iPad has been delayed until May, people in Israel waiting to get their hands on the device will be able to do so on schedule with Apple's release, and foreign travelers will be able to enter the country with the devices. Reasons for the previous ban are still unclear, but officials are denying it had anything to do with worry that wireless signals would interfere with military equipment.

Look, we know Leo has lost much of his boyish good looks, but we certainly think he's still marriage material. Then again, we don't have a Jewish mother country to please. Baruch Marzel, on behalf of Israeli Nationalist group Lehava, sent Israeli model Bar Refaeli, and her mother, a letter urging her to ditch her non-Jewish boyfriend, Leonardo DiCaprio.

“It is not by chance that you were born Jewish. Your grandmother and her grandmother did not dream that one of their descendants would one day remove the family’s future generations from the Jewish people. Assimilation has forever been one of the enemies of the Jewish people . . . Come to your senses, look forward and back too - and not only the present. Don’t marry Leonardo DiCaprio, don’t harm the future generations.”

The words "Don’t marry Leonardo DiCaprio, don’t harm the future generations" are so wonderfully absurd that just reading them makes me happy I got out of bed today. Is there even a word for a male shiksa?

Looks like this is another animal whose tongue is not pink, but that's not what makes her special - she's the eleventh kid calf in her family! Twenty-year-old Denisa gave birth six days ago at the Safari Park Zoo in Ramat Gan, Israel, setting the world record for giraffe babies born in captivity! Although the lil one's still nameless, she is clearly comfortable turning her nose up and sticking her tongue out at the spotlight.

Oh Snap! Bikers Promise to Dress If Israel Lets Them Ride

Earlier this week the Israeli government voted down a bill, which would have funded procycling projects. So last night naked cyclists rode around Tel Aviv as part of a nighttime protest, calling on the government to support cycling. Hey, at least they saved their nudity for after dark! One of these days I want someone to find out if all these nude protests actually get results.
