OMG: It's International Nachos Day!

You'd think the self-described Queen of Nachos would just know in her gut about the following, but alas, this is how I was informed that it was International Nachos Day. A transcript of this morning's Blackberry text messages, verbatim:

CasaSugar: Do you know what today is? It is the day that nachos were supposedly invented!

GiggleSugar: Holy crap!!! I am on it.

So without further ado, the legend of how nachos were born: 65 years ago, a genius maitre d' named Ignacio "Nacho" Anaya (perhaps my firstborn son's name?), was just doing his thing at a restaurant in Piedras Negras, Mexico near the Texas border. As legend has it, some Americans came in right after the chef had stepped out, so ol' Nacho Anaya whipped up a tasty treat of chips and cheese melted under the broiler - with some spicy jalepenos thrown on top just to be jaunty. And there you have it, my friends, the story of nachos. Celebrate this hallowed day, Oct. 21, by eating a pile of cheesy chips and saluting its inventor! I know I will. Barack's Big Speech: What Was It Like at Invesco Field?

What a night! While Liberty and I hashed out the finer points of Barack's speech over dinner, one thing was clear: the setting was pretty unbelievable (for reasons we'll get into soon.) Wading through the mile-long line to the Mile High Stadium, we scored front and center seats - so front and center, we were right under the Oprah, Kanye, Angela Basset, Gayle King, Forrest Whittaker suite.

Shawn Johnson leading the pledge and Jennifer Hudson singing the national anthem was just the beginning. From Sheryl Crow to Stevie Wonder, to Will.i.am and John Legend, the stage was a parade of stars before Barack even thought about taking the stage. I'm telling you, when Oprah showed up, the screams from the crowd? I thought someone had died, or worse. The weather was like bathwater, and was a perfect stage for the speeches - the real main event - that we'll get into very soon, because we sure didn't see eye-to-eye on this one. In the meantime, take a peek at who else took in the view tonight.

Yes We Can Buy a CD to Support Obama Campaign

Pro-Obama musicians have teamed up to record "Yes We Can: Voices of a Grassroots Movement." Proceeds of the first-ever campaign compilation will support Obama's campaign. The artists also hope that the music will mobilize voters.

So whose voices make up a grassroots movement? Stevie Wonder, Sheryl Crow, John Mayer, Lionel Richie, Kanye West, Adam Levine, and John Legend all grace the album, whose self-proclaimed inspiration is "hope, unity, and change." It also includes excerpts from Obama's speeches. You can either download, or purchase the CD on Barack Obama's website. GiggleSugar Reader Spotlight: Gruaig Rua

Miss Sassy Gruaig Rua has clearly not changed much since she was a fiery little tot. Our friend from Ireland tells us what she likes about GiggleSugar and throws in a joke at the end to boot! Yay, Gruaig Rua!

GS: What’s your motto?
GR: “When life gives you lemons, just add vodka.” It’s so true! Seriously though, my favourite motto is “Dream as if you’ll live forever, live as if you’ll die today” - James Dean. I’m managing the first part, just struggling with the second part. But I’m working on it!

GS: Where are you from?
GR: Ireland, The Emerald Isle, The Land of Leprechauns and Guinness, Top o’ the Morning. I’ll stop now

GS: What do you do?
GR: I work for the government. I’m tempted to leave it at that so everyone will imagine that I am this glamorous undercover agent, but no. I work for the local government county council offices. You know, I’m too lazy to explain it so I’ve copied the mission statement from our website! “Cork County Council is a local authority established by statute whose corporate purpose is to enhance the physical, social, cultural and economic environment of the county in a sustainable and socially inclusive manner, so as to improve the quality of life of its citizens.”

GS: How would you describe your sense of humor?
GR: Childish and sarcastic. Could I BE anymore like Chandler Bing?

GS: What’s your favorite GiggleSugar post?
GR: Anything to do with dogs! Seriously. I’m a canine-aholic! I also love the Family Guy posts. And I really miss Pearl – she’s a legend!

GS: Who’s the cutest funny man and funny woman?
GR: The love of my life will always be Mr. George Clooney. Ok, so he’s not technically a “comedian,” but he’s a funny guy! As for a good looking female comedian, I’m stumped. That’s terrible isn’t it?! Oooooh, I’m going to say Tyra Banks, although I don’t think she’s intentionally funny on ANTM, but I sure do laugh my ass off!

GS: Who are your favorite male and female comedians?
GR: I just love Kath & Kim. I ordered the Series 4 DVD online and when I got home from work today, it was here!! I’m not ashamed to say I did a little dance around my bedroom I also love Catherine Tate, the woman is a genius. As for the male of the species, I’m going to go with a duet – David Williams and Matt Lucas of Little Britain. Genius.

GS: What’s your favorite comedy of all time?
GR: Just one? Too hard! My favourite depends on my mood. I love Priscilla Queen of the Desert, The Princess Bride, Little Miss Sunshine, Old School and…….my guilty pleasure….White Chicks. I know, I know! The funniest movie I’ve seen recently is Superbad. Ahhhh, McLovin.

GS: If your life were a comedy, what would it be?
GR: It would be Ugly Betty. Seriously. My office seems to have gradually transformed into “Mode.” Each day there are prettier and more stylish girls walking the halls. And the two colleagues I go to lunch with look like freakin' supermodels – I’m like an oompa-loompa walking between them!

GS: Do you look like someone famous?
GR: Well, I tried a lookalike website earlier this year and it said that I looked like Audrey Tautou. Hah, I wish I did! Also listed were Shannen Doherty and Sophia Bush. But the one I most looked like was Thora Birch. It’s only in a couple of specific pictures, but it’s uncanny!

GR free-for-all: I’m 28, but feel like I’m still 19. I’m living at home
with my parents (god love 'em!) because I’m desperately trying to save for my upcoming world travels. Yes, indeedy, if everything goes according to plan next year, I should to be heading to Australia for 12 months. Fingers, toes, and eyes crossed people! I’m also completely and totally obsessed with dogs. Amazingly though, I just have the one – my golden retriever Holly. I just adore her!! She’s a bit of a nutter, like her mama! If and when I get my own place, I hope to adopt lots more fuzzy friends. I’ve had several people tell me that they can see me in five years, living in a foreign land, driving one of those small convertible jeeps, with about 15 dogs hanging out on the back seat. They forget to mention that Mr. Clooney will be in the passenger seat……And finally I’m going to share my favourite joke: Two nuns are driving down a road late at night when a vampire jumps onto the bonnet. The nun who is driving says to the other, "Quick! Show him your cross." So the other nun leans out of the window and shouts, "Get off our f*cking car."

You Asked: I Am Afraid of Failure

Dear Sugar --

I am a Senior at an art school and will be getting my Bachelor's in Advertising soon. I recently entered an ad campaign for a competition and didn't make it. Everyone says that my ads are great. Truthfully, I am never satisfied with my work and feel that I have no talent. I am not sure what to do now. I've come this far in school and I am not sure if I am really good at it. I really feel that I won't be able to get a job when school's over. I try to believe in myself, but somehow I can't. I really need your advice! Thank you. ~Deterred Dana

Dear Deterred Dana --

You can't let one little setback get you down! I bet you won't meet a lot of successful people in this world that have not lost at least one competition in their lives. People who have never lost a contest probably have never entered one. We can learn a lot more from our failures than we can from our successes. Take Michael Jordan, the basketball legend, for example. He was initially cut from his high school basketball team and then went on to become a superstar.

I suggest that you pick yourself up, brush yourself off and get back out there. It sounds like you have not started applying for jobs yet, so don't be so hard on yourself. Start searching the online job boards (MediaBistro.com is great for creative jobs), visit your school's career center to find out when companies will be on campus recruiting and send your resume and portfolio to companies you are interested in working for. Before you know it, you will start booking interviews and they will see all you have to offer. This will help you regain your confidence. Think positively, and I wish you good luck!

Being somewhat of a traditionalist, I have never asked a man out for a date. However, currently there’s someone I’m very interested in dating, who acts as if he is interested in me, but he hasn't made the move. I am willing to go out of my comfort zone and take a risk here and ask him out, but what kind of message will that send? I don't want to come off too aggressive or easy for that matter, but I don't want to let a good guy go! So what do you think? Should I ask him out?

MY YOUNG TROLLYMOG: No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. No. You should not “ask him out.” Lord!

I’m breaking into a persp. just reading your question. There would be no blunder so abominable, no goof so gauche. Why? Not because you’re worried you’ll “come off too aggressive or easy.” But because you’re worried you’ll come off as too aggressive and easy. It’s simply not your style. It is, as you say, “out of your comfort zone.”

So here are three ways to ask him out . . . without asking him out:

#1: THE BONNIE & CLYDE TACTIC

You’ll just . . . assume he’s aching to go out with you, be with you, worship you.

IE: The next time you see him, you’ll smile, work the lashes, slip your arm through his and say, “Oh, I’ve got such a thing for a hot basket of French fries . . . . sneak away with me! Let’s run off to--” [and here you’ll whisper such a posh/evil sports bar, pool hall, dive, the very name will conjure up most dangerously attractive place in the world.]

It’s not about asking the guy on a date--it’s about suggesting he tag along on an
adventure.

#2: THE AMY WINEHOUSE TACTIC

You’ll just . . . compel him to follow you to the ends of the earth.

IE: This is a slight variation on #1. When next you’re conversing with the lad, rivet your attention on him--he’s a legend . . . he’s a genius . . . he’s an idol . . . he’s a god-- and say, “you’re so brilliant, you deserve a Mojito (Guinness, Caffe Americano )” pluck him by the sleeve and simply whip him (Gwen-Christina-Avril-Scarlett-Amy style) to the closest pub, coffee shop, outdoor café.

#3: THE GREEN DAY TACTIC

You’ll just . . . inflame him.

IE: When you see him, you’ll smile, and without saying a word, you’ll hold up two
tickets to the Green Day concert.

Then he has to say: “Gawdam! You got Tickets! Are you kidding? Wait--wait--are you kidding? Can I go? You mean--dang!--I get to go with you?”
