The bond that forms between the family dog and the baby of the house is an inevitable and mysterious thing. The dog is usually jealous at first, but eventually grows overprotective of the crying, crapping, crawling, yet oh-so adorable, new rug rat. So is the pup below trying to steal the spotlight from his whining companion or simply trying to soothe the child? Who knows. But he's pretty darn persuasive . . .

He’s literally run with the wolves for years, sleeping, eating, and living with them and even being the leader of a pack. His “human love” Helen Jeffs is now trying to live with him and his feral, furry friends, too.

Love Thy Neighbor: Caribbean Tribe to Keep It in the Family

Think your family meddles in your love life? What if President Bush was the one telling you who to marry? (Ow, my ears! I can hear your howls from here.) That's kind of the case for an ancient Caribbean tribe, the Kalinago. To prevent the disappearance of their culture, Chief Charles Williams of the Dominica-based tribe said members should not marry non-Kalinago people.

He said of the proposition, "The impact of colonization has been so strong on us that if we do not take steps to protect the race, it will be soon extinct." If they follow his plan, in an island of 70,000 people, the dating pool is limited to 3,000 tribal members. Want to know who seems to be the blame? According to the Kalinago cultural queen, "Well, for some people this is a ticklish issue. She thinks the Kalinago women are the cause of the shrinking population. She says, "You go out there, you see a nice white guy and you fall in love," cautioning, "you have to stick to your people, you have to stick to your traditions and that's the only way."

On the tribes 3,700-acre territory, poverty is a huge problem. For young girls with ambition, it's a tough sell to marry and stay. "They want us to stay here to marry our own tribe but I don't think that will happen. It's already happening that we are marrying outsiders. They cannot tell us what to do. If we want to be pilots or nurses, we have to leave the island."

Cultural pride aside, the heart comes into play, too. According to several locals, "You can't tell someone who they should or shouldn't love." Are the elders right? Should the Kalinago be fighting with their hearts to preserve their culture?

Ask E. Jean For DearSugar: Did I Upset Him That Much?

Dear E. Jean,
Last weekend I had a new guy over for dinner. I spent two days cleaning, one day cooking, and everything went fantastically until we started watching a movie after dessert and fooling around on the couch. I admit I had three cognacs, but as he was kissing me, I began laughing at the movie and at one point I started repeating some of the dialogue.

E. Jean, I couldn’t help myself. It was Dr. Strangelove. The guy is a movie buff and a big Kubrick fan! Anyway, once I started laughing, I couldn’t stop. I apologized about 50 times, but he got up abruptly, said "Thank you for dinner," made a dash for the front door . . . and left!

I got a text from him the next day that said "You’re the only woman I know who can cook like Martha Stewart and talk like Slim Pickens."

Obviously I hurt his ego. But must I remain totally silent when a guy starts making his moves on me? - Love Is Very Strange

No, indeed. I’m tired of men telling women what they may and may not do when snogging. It is perfectly proper for a young lady to sigh, snort softly, moan, whimper, mewl, twitter, howl in a low voice, hiss, growl, squeal, whine, purr, and scream faintly. However, it is considered bad form to laugh more than 20 minutes or, when hooking up with a new boyfriend, to say aloud any of the following:

"How much do you love me?"
"Nevermind the sores. They don’t really itch that much."
"Do you want to move in, or just get married immediately?"
"Oh, don’t worry, I can IM my girlfriends and have sex with you at the same time."
"I just love playing with your man boobs!"

Saying anything else is permitted - particularly juicy impersonations of Mr. Slim Pickens. Because, of course, you’re supposed to laugh at Dr. Strangelove. ("Gentlemen! No fighting in the war room!") It’s one of the funniest movies in the history of cinema. As for the guy? The poor chap is so thin-skinned it's amazing he could keep his liver from falling out of his body and dropping onto the floor.

She cries that she needs to go to the bathroom, she grabs her crotch, she hoots and howls. Daytime TV is clearly making strides.

He may not be whistling any recognizable tunes, but he sure can make some noise. And okay, he's not really whistling but actually howling-- who cares? He gets an A for effort. He's also impossibly cute and that's enough to make me want to blow a whistle or two in his direction.

Guard Dog Doubles As A Siren

We've all heard of guard dogs, but I bet you haven't heard one quite like this. His name is Oscar Shnookums and he can hoot, howl, and sound just like all the police sirens around town. What a deal-- this dog is a pet and home alarm system all in one! (Perhaps this police pup should take some notes?)
