The Internet has become a world in and of itself, so why wouldn't the gang hang out and mingle? Our gal Google finally got it together and threw a long overdue house party. As predicted, Flickr couldn't keep his camera phone to himself, Facebook was annoying as hell, Digg was all up in everyone else's business, Wikipedia ran amok with rumors, and eBay wouldn't quit trying to push cheap shite onto people. But at least MySpace liked to party.

Do Shows Like Gossip Girl Accurately Reflect College Life?

In an article in the New York Post today, real-life NYU students respond to Gossip Girl's depiction of NYU freshman orientation. What do they think of the show's fictional keg parties on rooftops, characters requesting who they want to room with to the Housing Office, and the notion that NYU is cheaper than Yale? (Here's a Buzz recap of this week's goings-on to refresh your memories!)

Although one blogger gives the thumbs up to the show's reference to an "Art & the World" class he actually took his freshman year at Tisch, another one disses the idea of a rooftop party. "Don't the writers know," he snipes, "that in NYU housing we're forbidden to peek outside of our windows for the slight chance that we might kill ourselves?"

Do shows like Gossip Girl and Greek reflect college experience (fairly) accurately or is it all just fun and fantasy?

Were You Ever in a Sorority?

Sorority Row, starring Audrina Patridge and Rumer Willis, opened yesterday and the premise is as silly as you can imagine it would be: a sorority house prank gone wrong unleashes a serial killer who begins to stalk the the sorority sisters.

I hear more about sorority hazing rituals in the news than I do about serial killers on the loose in sorority houses. Other impressions are probably stereotypes: lots of female bonding, lots of backstabbing, wild parties and the occasional charity fundraiser. I was never in a sorority, so I'm curious: if you were in a sorority, did you enjoy it? And if you weren't in one, what do you think about them?

French President Nicolas Sarkozy is quite the ladies' man. He's been married to two different women since becoming president in 2007 and got caught checking out a young woman at the last G8 conference in Italy. (Was he or wasn't he?!).

When he's not in Paris with his supermodel wife Carla Bruni, Nicolas can be found jogging around NYC's Central Park. The pair was stateside this weekend so Carla Bruni could sing happy birthday to Nelson Mandela at his 91st birthday party.

Would you like to trade places with Carla and bring the powerful Nicolas back to your house, or are you saying: "non, merci."

Book Bag: The Big Rewind, a Pop Culture Memoir

On more than one occasion, I've imagined what song would make the perfect soundtrack for a moment I'm currently living. One of my friends' favorite party topics is who would play us in our hypothetical biopics. We are a pop-culture obsessed culture, comparing our realities to that of reality TV stars and voraciously devouring VH1 specials and The Soup.

Naturally, I love the idea of The Big Rewind: A Memoir Brought to You by Pop Culture by The Onion arts and entertainment writer Nathan Rabin. The book tells Rabin's autobiography through the context of the songs, books, movies, and other diversions that defined his youth.

If you're still looking for something to read this month, Rabin's memoir sounds pretty rich. Each episode is tied to a specific song, book, or show, whether it's a story about tripping on mushrooms at the Anne Frank house in Amsterdam or a stay in a mental hospital that's compared to Girl, Interrupted. Like an ideal family, our personal pantheon will never let us down. Ella Fitzgerald's version of "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered" will never abandon you. Belle and Sebastian's If You're Feeling Sinister will never run off with your best friend. John Kennedy Toole's A Confederacy of Dunces will never tell you that it finds the prospect of having sex with you less appealing than watching back-to-back reruns of The Golden Girls.

It sounds as if many of Rabin's cultural references are also my own. But what would be the movies, books, TV shows, and more that would shape the story of your life?

GOP Losing Women and Almost Every Other Demographic

According to a new Gallup poll, the Republican party has lost support in nearly every demographic of American society - be it low-income, high-income, college educated, male, female, southern, white, or nonwhite voters. Support remains steady only among frequent churchgoers.

In the general population, Republicans trail Democrats in support by a 14-point margin, compared to an even split in 2001. Among women, support for the GOP is down 5 percentage points since George W. Bush's first year in office. Today, only 35 percent of American women lean Republican and overall fewer women than men are Republican.

So what has caused this movement away from the GOP? For my thoughts, read more.

I suspect that after eight years in the White House, the Republican party became synonymous with the Bush administration, which also means it's synonymous with two wars, the recession, Hurricane Katrina, and some strong religion-based positions such as support for abstinence-only education, overturning Roe v. Wade, and bans on stem-cell research and same-sex marriage. Judging by the poll results, Americans who previously supported the Republican agenda and ideology are ready to try something new.

Why do you think women - and almost all other demographic groups - are moving away from the Republican party? If you're not Republican, what would you need to hear from GOP leaders to make you consider supporting them?

Craigslist Casual Encounters: A New(ish) Sexual Frontier

I wonder how many people Craigslist founder Craig Newmark has helped to find an apartment, sell a guitar . . . or hook up.

Besides its helpful housing, for sale, and job sections, Craigslist has a personals section that caters to every predilection, ranging from the strictly platonic to relationship seekers to Casual Encounters - its anonymous sex hookup section.

Sometimes dangerous and often disappointing, Casual Encounters is nevertheless part of what gives the Craigslist personals section higher traffic than other online personals sites - including Match.com, eHarmony, and Yahoo personals.

"Our users like the ability to be both candid and, initially, anonymous," says Newmark matter of factly about Casual Encounters, which accounts for 2 percent of all Craigslist postings.

In a recent New York Times trend piece, 100 or so users were interviewed about their experiences and provided a peek into who posts and answers those ads: Craigslist Casual Encounters attracts a gamut, from "desperados" to prostitutes and spammers and thrill-seeking hotties. Nola, a 42-year-old saleswoman in Manhattan, seeks men who will meet her in a public place, so she can go to the bathroom, take her underwear off, and hand it to them in an envelope - for a fee. Melvin, a 35-year-old divorcé, recently made the mistake of going to a woman's apartment before meeting her in public, finding that she was insecure about her weight and trying to hide it by turning out the lights.

And then there's someone like Michael, a handsome artist who claims, "I've met some extraordinarily beautiful women, had a few extraordinary sexual encounters that made my teeth itch and my brain sweat, put me in states of weird contemplation like, 'My God, I’ve never experienced that before.'"

Casual Encounters has been around since 2000 and has probably changed the way a lot of sexually frustrated people deal with dry spells. The question is - does it work? And is it healthy for the parties involved?
