The other night I was up late channel surfing and I landed on the Home Shopping Network, which was doing a special segment on Skineez™ Skincarewear™ Slimming Boot-Cut Jean ($100). The pants are touted as a "slimming garment," and are treated with a formula that's said to diminish cellulite. I'm not talking Spanx or a body shaper - they claim to actually treat, not just hide your unsightly bumps and lumps. You are supposed to treat them with a replenishing spray ($35) that "helps the garment moisturize, tone and firm and its key ingredients include shea butter, apricot kernel oil, rose hip oil and Vitamin E" after six to 10 washings. Callers seemed to love the set up, which made me wonder - could it possibly work? I guess the idea is you trap the formula in your tight pants and treat your skin with it while you wear it. Have you ever tried anything like this? Did it work?

The Home Shopping Network has bewildered me since the '90s. I never understood the phenomenon, why people get so attached to it . . . and more importantly, why people would buy all that crap. But, as it turns out, HSN does actually sell some stylish items, particularly in the home décor department. Interior designer Nate Berkus, beloved by Oprah Winfrey, carries an exclusive home collection with the retailer-cum-television-network, as well as textile designer John Robshaw and party planner to the stars Colin Cowie. HSN actually also has a handful of both classic and trendy pieces that are quite stylish, I must say, but not necessarily by a recognizable brand.

The gaudy ring this host is advertising takes a tumble off the display table in the middle of a home-shopping segment. Testing for scratch resistance, are we? Not so much. The show's director isn't amused and rebukes the host when the camera isn't looking. The host then does what any soon-to-be-unemployed host does when he's off camera and angry - flip the bird, natch. The only problem is, he isn't off camera . . .

This HSN host makes a minor mistake - no big deal. But instead of making a quick recovery, he neighs like a horse, openly declares his confusion, and tries to sell us "pystic" earrings. And then he laughs. And laughs. Marvels at his own comedic genius. And laughs some more. Let's hope those earrings can sell themselves! (Mr. Clean, is that you?)

Does the Home Shopping Network Have a Point?

Is HSN still selling junk or has the network turned into an open therapy sesh? In this segment, someone calls into the show to ask the host not to have an on-air meltdown. Oh, and the caller wants to ask about a product that was featured ten years ago. This call goes on and on until the host loses all composure and pretty much pleads insanity. So, what were we selling again?

Why Is "Jewelry Television" Selling Wood?

This is clearly a joke, but it was filmed by real Jewelry Television spokespeople. They thought a little false advertising could go a "long" way. Not so much. Is it just me, or are they jacking J.T.'s "D*ck In A Box" concept? That is, "On this very special occasion, give the gal you love the gift that'll go the distance. Give her the gift of wood." Lame.

From "The Way-Too-Honest Home Shopping Network" channel to "The Too Demanding In Bed" channel, it offers the finest in home entertainment without all the fluff, special effects, or realistic plot lines. I'm already sold, so where do I sign up? (Truth be told, I really want that quilt made from the twenty ugliest quilts in the world, and where else am I gonna get it?)

Home shopping doesn't disappoint these days, does it? In addition to the goods, we're getting a good laugh too! While trying to sell a fondue fountain, these two ~~professionals~~ overgrown third graders find themselves giggling at the mere mention of "little wieners" on the air. How those words even entered the sales pitch for a fondue fountain, I'm still trying to figure out. But who doesn't love a blatant show of immaturity?

We meet again, Mike Rowe! And this time you're ~~patronizing~~ selling a figurine made by Precious Moments. It's sweet and all, but what I find most precious is the way you completely diminish the product's charm with your mention of cowlicks and Buckwheat and bickering children. How could anyone resist that kind of sales pitch? (And for the record, the residents of Who-ville were not called Who-ters! Think again.)
