Do People Make Assumptions About Your Love Life?

I have a feeling it's just a celebrity thing, but it seems like whenever a single woman is seen dining or socializing with a single man, they're all of a sudden perceived to be romantically involved. In Jennifer Aniston's case - who was recently seen having dinner with Gerard Butler - I think the public just wants to see her attached, but does this kind of speculation happen in your life too? Do people automatically assume you're hooking up with the guy you're spending time with? Or do you automatically assume that of your friends? I'm curious to know if your first instincts go to romance instead of friendship like it clearly does in Hollywood.

Does the Media Keep Actors in the Closet?

According to several A-List actors, there is a very obvious bias in Hollywood and they say it’s against hiring homosexuals. In an exclusive interview to be released next week, Alan Cumming - one of the stars of X-Men 2 - said that actors are more timid about coming out because of the way the press portrays homosexuality - they fear the controversy. “I don’t think the people that go see films care that much – the media make it more of a deal and it’s made into controversy. There is a lot of homophobia in the world – but in Hollywood definitely.”

Stephen Fry and Rupert Everett who have both claimed a homosexual preference also complained that they are now pigeonholed. Derek Munn, director of public affairs for Stonewall, a group that promotes equality and justice for gay people said: “The pitifully low number of openly lesbian or gay actors suggests that there is a problem. The film industry needs to think about why it is gay actors choose not to come out.”

Critic Says Hollywood Abuses Arab Bogeyman

One critic is getting very critical of Hollywood's portrayal of Arabs and Muslims in film and television. Jack Shaheen, an American of Lebanese decent, told Reuters that in America, where it is politically incorrect to make derogatory comments about other groups like African Americans or Jews, there is no social taboo against reinforcing damaging Arab or Muslim stereotypes.

In his latest book, Guilty, Shaheen says that the an anti-Arab tendency was present before September 11^th. Disney's Aladdin (1992) and Father of the Bride Part II both fail the test. (Remember the Arab guy trying to buy Steve Martin's house?)

But, since September 11^th, the vilifying has picked up. Shaheen writes that
2006's The Kingdom presented some of the most damaging depictions of Arabs in which "even Arab children cannot be trusted." Movies that make the A-list? Shaheen says Babel (2006) and Rendition (2007) presented a more complex view of Arabs.

Campaign Kids on Access Hollywood, Blogging: Right Roles?

The Obama kids (Malia and Sascha) had a first this week: a full-family interview on Access Hollywood. Though if the girls had any plans for an encore, dad has put his foot down this morning. Obama regrets the interview, saying that he doesn't think the exposure is "healthy" and that the family got carried away because the interview was on Malia's birthday, and added that famous dad-ism, "it won't happen again."

The Obama girls aren't the only campaign kids in and out of the spotlight. Meghan McCain, though quite a bit older than her Democratic counterparts, is no stranger to the stump. She has her high-profile blog, plans to author a children's book, and isn't a stranger to red-carpet events - she's even been in GQ, where it came out that she voted for John Kerry. By contrast, her brothers (Jack and Jimmy) are military men, with Jack in the Naval Academy and pretty publicity-shy, and Jimmy who returned from Iraq in February, and whose service is famously off-the-table on the campaign trail.

What's the right role for a kid on the campaign trail? Was Obama right to let the girls do the interview? Should the candidates let their kids choose their level of involvement as it appears McCain has?
