Woman Wins Legal Fight to Harvest Dead Fiance's Sperm

By turns poignant and thought-provoking, Gisela Marrero's legal battle to harvest her dead fiance's sperm tested the limits of medical ethics.

In the end, four hours before the deceased's semen would no longer be viable (it remains so for only 36 hours after someone dies), the Bronx State Supreme Court approved her request and sperm bank employees rushed to his body.

What led everyone to this legal tangle began as a tragedy. 31-year-old Johnny Quintana, Marrero's partner with whom she already had a baby, died suddenly of a suspected heart attack. Marrero claims that hours before his death, she and Quintana had talked about having another baby. "This was his wish," she said. "It's the last thing I can do for him." In the annals of actors behaving badly and then trying to explain their behavior, this ranks among one of the most hilarious explanations ever. A TMZ photographer who got too close to Harrelson claimed that the actor pushed him in the face and damaged his camera. Harrelson's excuse when questioned by police? "I wrapped a movie called Zombieland, in which I was constantly under assault by zombies, then flew to New York, still very much in character," Harrelson said in a statement. "With my daughter at the airport I was startled by a paparazzo, who I quite understandably mistook for a zombie," he said. (My emphasis.) Italy Earthquake: Elderly Woman Knitted as She Waited For Rescue

When life gives you ~~lemons~~ earthquakes, make ~~lemonade~~ a sweater! That's practically what cute 98-year-old Maria D'Antuono did while trapped for 30 hours under the stone rubble of her home in Tempera, Italy, after Monday's earthquake hit her village. Maria lived with her daughter, and because the quake was so strong, rescuers just assumed she must be dead. In the morning, fireman were astonished to discover her under her bed knitting and crocheting to occupy her time. Fans of crafting everywhere need to give this woman a prize. Go, Maria! Florida Teacher Accused of Being Drunk at School Quits

Why teach middle school students boring old reading, writing, and arithmetic when you can show them how to party like a middle-aged rock star? That appears to have been 42-year-old Tampa Bay resident Kylene Nelson's strategy when she got so drunk at school she forced her terrified students to dance with her and then ran to a nearby recreation center where she passed out on some outdoor chairs. Students report being horrified that Nelson appeared to have no underwear on while she rubbed her butt all over them. As one student said, "We all got kinda scared." Jeebus, woman! Get some help. Ohio Man Charged With Drunken Driving on a Bar Stool

You know it's time for rehab and that your brain is pickled beyond belief when you decide that your best means of transportation is a motorized bar stool you made yourself. You might as well just do what that drunk on The Andy Griffith Show would do: get wasted, and go to directly to the police station and sleep it off inside a jail cell. Someone called the cops when they saw this fool driving erratically in a "strange motorized machine" that turned out to be his customized lawn mower vehicle. I mean, seriously, dude. WTF?! Shopping Sprees Linked to Periods

Good news, ladies! Now in addition to being able to blame sudden crying jags, overeating, and homicidal tendencies to PMS, we get to add compulsive shopping, too! (Sweet!) A recent study in England followed about 150 women along their monthly cycles. They found that in the "luteal phase" (why does that term give me the creeps?) women attempted to regulate intense mood swings due to hormonal changes by overspending, particularly on feminine "ornaments" like makeup, high heels, and jewelry. Is This Woman Really as Old as the Light Bulb? "Oldest Person in the World" Set to Celebrate Her 130th Birthday

Let's give it up for Sakhan Dosova of Kazakhstan - the oldest known human being in the world at 130 years old! It was thought that the oldest person in the world was 114, but that person's a spring chicken compared to Dosova. Demographers were gobsmacked to find out that she was on Stalin's first census in 1926 - at age 47!

Let's put this in perspective: Dosova was born when Queen Victoria was in rule and Disraeli was prime minister, as well as the year that Stalin and Einstein were born. 1879, the year of her birth, was also the year Edison invented the light bulb. (Are you gettin' how ancient this lady is yet?) She attributes her longevity to avoiding sweets, eating a lot of cottage cheese, and having a sense of humor.
