Obama and Family "Cause Commotion" in Hawaii

Barack Obama took his daughters and some friends out to the mall in Hawaii this past weekend, and according to Reuters, "caused a commotion" with lookers-on and photographers. The president-elect, his trusty BlackBerry, his daughters, Malia, 10, and, Sasha, 7, and friends sat and snacked at a table while a crowd and Secret Service agents assembled around them. It's a scene that comes as no surprise to the 71 percent of CitizenSugar readers who say so long as people want to see the pictures, there will be paparazzi and buzz wherever the Obamas go. Here's more:

The agents struggled to hold back people trying to get closer to snap pictures of Obama eating a tuna and melted cheese sandwich and the girls enjoying shave ices, a local treat made from finely shaved ice and fruit syrup.

In recent interviews, such as his 60 Minutes special, Obama said he is dedicated to maintaining some normalcy for his daughters. At this point we expect to stay dialed in to what the Obamas are up to, but do you think the intense fascination will stay as fervent post the Inauguration?

John McCain was onto something when he called Barack Obama one of the biggest celebrities in the world. While the first-family-in-waiting rings in a Mele Kalikimaka from Hawaii, he's been followed by paparazzi usually found on the A-list celebrity beat.

While swimsuit pics of Jennifer Aniston, Britney Spears, and Matthew McConaughey are common, we sure haven't seen a flood of pics of President Bush in his swim trunks over the last eight years.

Apologies Abound: Hawaii Says "Sorry" to Leper Colonists

The state of Hawaii has apologized to the former leprosy patients that were forcibly confined to a remote peninsula on the island of Molokai. State Sen. J. Kalani English said in front of 12 former patients, "We're sorry. We're sorry for the treatment. We're sorry for the suffering that you've been through. The entire state is with me today as I say this."

Many families were torn apart when 8,000 lepers were sent to the compound in an effort to control the disease. The containment went on for over a century until 1969 when the requirement was ended. Though curing medicine was introduced in the 1940s, some patients chose to stay because it had become their home.

One of the brother's of the patients who didn't live long enough to see the apology said, "I know they're watching and nodding. All of these people. They're all agreeing. They're just saying 'at last.'"

Pictured above is Father Damien, the priest who went to the island to minister to the lepers and devoted his life to them. During his 16 years, he built six chapels, a home for boys and one for girls, dug graves and bandaged wounds. Father Damien eventually succumbed to the disease himself. He is one of Hawaii's two statues in the National Statuary Hall.

Are official apologies (like to the Aborigines and for slavery) a progressive step in the right direction? Will we see more to come?

Aloha Queen? Native Group Wants Hawaiian Monarchy Back

Some natives in Hawaii want to reclaim their island's sovereignty. The Hawaiian Kingdom Government issues its own license place, and operates under a separate judicial system. Her Majesty Mahealani Kahau leads the group of 1,000 members who claim the right to dissolve Hawaii and confiscate all bank assets in the state.

The official American state government pretty much leaves the legally unenforceable monarchy alone. Out of the population of 1.3 million, 200,000 are Hawaiian natives. Hawaii boasts numerous organizations claiming sovereignty over the island on behalf of the natives.

Before the US annexed Hawaii in 1898, Queen Liliuokalani ruled the paradise. American businessmen ousted and imprisoned the queen, and now the Kingdom Government is fighting for reparations. In 2007, they levied a $7 trillion fine on the American state. Think they'll have any luck?

Do native Hawaiians have a right to assert their sovereignty? Legislation passed by the House of Representatives, and awaiting adoption by the US Senate, would grant Native Hawaiians self-government similar to American Indian tribes. Will that be enough to address past wrongs?

Product of the Day: The Hawaii Chair

I'm all for the power of positive thinking, but I think the Hawaii Chair may be taking that idea a tad too far. The selling point? "If you sit, you can get fit" and "Take the work out of your workout." Ha! In my dreams! Throw in, "while eating nachos" and I'm sold. (Honestly, I have a feeling that all this product does is keep you from concentrating on your work. How can doing hula motions while sitting down be conducive to work?)

"You know Tamra," this here Hawaii Chair is as comfortable as an effing earthquake - but you're gonna get one anyway, cuz it's the newest piece of workout equipment that promises to take inches off of your waistline, without requiring any effort outta you. That's right, hanging onto the nearest stable object in a frantic attempt to keep yourself mounted requires very little - if any - exertion. And someone might slap a sexual harassment suit on you for getting your hula on at work, but at least you'll look slim and trim in court.

How Do I Handle This Strip Club Situation?

First of all my husband and I have been married for half of a year now. He's in the Navy and just got deployed, but right before the deployment he was sent to Hawaii for one day. I dropped him off at the airport and it was so hard for me to let him go. He called from Hawaii and we talked for five minutes then he said he had to go and he would call back.

As I was checking our bank account to check on the bills I noticed he had paid to go in to some type of club. While crying my eyes out because of how much I already missed him and knowing he wasn't coming home any time soon, I waited for him to call back. When he finally did I got him to tell me the truth and it turned out to be a strip club. This was his first time going into a strip club. The problem is that I feel so offended and disrespected. I know I'm not unattractive, and I'm very open minded in our sex life. So to me it seems as if I'm not enough for him, and that he didn't care about how I feel about strip clubs. The fact that he was lusting over those girls makes me so angry and upset.

When we talked I was so mad and disappointed and couldn't stop crying. But after a while I realized that I've been told not to say anything negative or upsetting to him since he was going on deployment to a very stressful environment. I won't be able to talk to him at all while he's gone, I can only send emails but I can't confront him there either. So I had to pretend that I got over it and that I was OK, so he wouldn't feel bad and guilty. But in reality I feel so disgusted and can't take the thought of him wanting someone else. I'm alone and don't have any family here, this is our first deployment and I'm still trying to handle it. He made things so much worse for me, now I'm not just worried about his safety, but also at the thought of when he goes to a port he's going to cheat on me. I'm just hurt and feel resentment towards him, but for as long as he's out I have to pretend I'm fine and support him through the emails. I know some people might think I'm over reacting, but to me this is just like cheating.

Perhaps we've been a little too hard on Miss Teen South Carolina. And I say this because I just came across this old video of Miss Hawaii (Ha-Vie-Ee), who proves to be even more brain blank. For crying out loud, she's not even thinking on the spot here. She's reciting something she's had months to practice and she still somehow screws up!? (At least the spackled-on smile and mile wide should pads make up for it, right?)

Award-winning Elvis impersonator Steve Caprice married his fiancée in a re-creation of the Blue Hawaii wedding scene. The wedding went down in Porthcawl, Wales, a town that hosts the largest annual Elvis Festival in Europe.

A quick Google search reveals that chapels in Las Vegas offer Blue Hawaii wedding packages. So you too can have an Elvis-inspired wedding!

President-Elect Barack Obama Shows Off His Swing in Hawaii

Everyone needs a moment of relaxation, especially if you're about to take on the most important elected office in the world. President-elect Barack Obama was spotted playing a round of golf in Hawaii over the weekend with quite an entourage keeping watch. He's in town with his family for the holidays like they do every year and found time to hit the links before he takes office in January. Never straying too far from work, his hotly contended and headline making BlackBerry was strapped to his belt as usual. After admitting that he's "not that good" at golf, Obama enjoyed a lunch of Spam sushi. President Bush gave up golf out of respect for our soldiers, so we'll see if Obama comes under fire for his hobby. Until then, enjoy some shots of Barack Obama hitting the links in his cargo shorts.
