Celebrate Valentine's Day With Harlequin's Interactive Kiss Creator

Why wait for the man of your dreams, when you can make 2D figurines embrace with Harlequin's interactive kissing tool on Patent Your Kiss. Frankly, I don't understand any of it, but Harlequin Romance, proud publisher of only the smuttiest novels for over 60 years, seems to believe the kiss is threatened, like nuclear families, the sanctity of marriage, or smoking in public.

Despite providing viking hats, chaps, and Fabio-like hair, it inflicts its PG-rated kissing values on you as you create the kiss. See the exclamation point on my guy's butt? I'm not sure why that's there, but I believe it's to note the human body can't physically move any farther in that direction; otherwise, a note would have popped up and said "Someone's feeling naughty. Let's rein it in." Because that happened. Twice.

Speaking of inflicting values, I don't think this is good for America. It's about three codes away from the virtual romances ruining Japanese love lives!

Harlequin Romance Jumps Into the Teen Reading Pool

Due in part to the smashing success of Stephanie Meyer's vampire series Twilight, about - do I really have to tell you this? - teen vampires, publishers like HarperTeen and Razorbill are seeking to supply teens' growing demand for romances with supernatural and paranormal subplots.

Even 60-year-old romance novel publisher ">Harlequin is getting involved with its newest imprint, Harlequin Teen, which will feature teen protagonists.

Sales of children's/young-adult hardcovers are up 36.4 percent, according to the Association of American Publishers, but sales of adult titles have taken a nose-dive. (Perhaps because some adults, it turns out, are reading young adult novels?) One example of what Harlequin Teen has up its sleeve: Intertwined, a book that "stars a teenage boy who has four souls living inside him and who is irresistibly drawn to a vampire princess." More vampires, eh?

Harlequin romance covers are iconic. Painted in lurid, brighter-than-life hues, the covers abound with cheesetastic scenes of scantily clad women, either in the tight embrace of some bohunk or merely looking around, bewildered. So to celebrate 60 years of providing women fantasy romances, the exhibit Heart of a Woman: Harlequin Cover Art 1949-2009 will look at the changing artwork of Harlequin covers and how they reflect the "shifts in private desires to shifts in the politics of gender." If I were in New York, where the show starts May 29, you can be sure I'd go!

Check Out Sony's 60th Anniversary Harlequin eBook Reader

Last year for Valentine's Day, Sony showed off a limited-edition pink eReader that came loaded with 14 Harlequin novels.

Well this year, they are offering the Digital Book (PRS-505) in not just red, but Sangria Red. This Limited Edition 60th Anniversary Harlequin reader is coming stocked with 16 Anniversary Harlequin eBook titles and a free copy of Secret Fantasy by Carly Phillips. It'll also feature an embossed cover.

Expect to see this reader on the Sony Style website later this month for around $300.

Nice and New: Jonathan Adler Harlequin Pillow

I've got to hand it to Jonathan Adler for bringing needlepoint back. The technique is no longer reserved for wasp-y belts or occupational therapy, but is now giving living rooms an ironic punch of whimsy and color. The Jonathan Adler Harlequin Pillow ($175) has a bright, graphic pattern based on a harlequin's traditional costume that will instantly liven up your living room sofa or chair. I'm too
straightedge to find his Drugs Pillow funny, but I'm all for harlequin's granny-chic aesthetic and oceanic-blue color palette. What do you think? I bet Adler's future husband likes it . . .

I think I just found the inspiration for my bedroom . . . or shall I say, boudoir? As a long time fan of the purple and red color combo, the dark shadows and moody feel of the latest crop of Miu Miu ads definitely intrigues. I am also a long time fan of Kirsten and think she is the perfect fit for the brand. The only thing I'm not thrilled about here is the actual clothes. This was one of my least favorite collections of Spring - a hodgepodge of French maids, Pierrots, harlequin and Playboy bunnies - and I ultimately felt the clothes weren't very wearable. But, Kristen wears the Spring offerings very well and with a subtle suggestion of kink. Miu Miu, reconsidered.

Paris Fashion Week, Spring 2008: Viktor & Rolf

After last season, when models walked out attached to their own personal lighting apparatuses, I was curious to see what gimmick Viktor & Rolf would come up with next.

Viktor Horsting and Rolf Snoeren are romancing the harlequin for Spring: Pierrot collars, pom-poms, diamond shapes, and violins were choice motifs. The pretty palette was Chanel-inspired: black, white, blushing pink and peach. There were a couple trademark fashion-as-surrealist-art outfits - the ruffled pink coat which framed the model's face with a white rosette and pink violin, for instance.

But as the models emerged from a gaping mouth, it was clear that Viktor & Rolf was going more commercial. Wearable silk minidresses with lace collars and multiple beautiful tiered gowns were red carpet-ready. Even the violin theme was toned down to a lace appliqué or a necklace. Subtle Viktor & Rolf, but the Amsterdam-based fashion brand still astounds.

Patricia Field Gives Models a Heart For Valentine's Day

How does Patricia Field celebrate Valentine's Day? By hosting a Disco Valentine's Ball, naturally. At Friday's costume party, 14 dancers wore a version of the traditional harlequin mask, designed by makeup artist Kim Anderson for Illamasqua. Now, unless you're hot and heavy with Bozo the Clown, the full face might be a bit much for date night. But the lips alone are foxy no matter what. Anderson created the look with Illamasqua lipstick in Sangers ($22), slicking on Illamasqua Intense Lipgloss in Succubus ($20).
