What Are Your Hanukkah Traditions?

Since tonight is the first night of Hanukkah, I thought it would be fun to share what traditions your families have on this special holiday. Every year, my dad makes a huge feast including the best potato latkes I've ever tasted. We get together and light the menorah that he made in his high school ceramics class (cute, huh?) and my mom leads the prayer. We keep things pretty traditional but since we celebrate Christmas as well, we don't exchange gifts.

So tell me, what are your family traditions and childhood memories of Hanukkah? And if you aren't Jewish, have you ever been to a friend's Hanukkah celebration?

On the last day of Hanukkah, it seems fitting to share a well-meaning but clueless sign found at a venerable gourmet grocery store in New York City. Dude, I'm not Jewish and even I know that ham is definitely not kosher!

Hanukkah Gift For My Boss

Dear Sugar
My boss converted to Judaism about ten years ago. I wouldn't call her devout, but she did join a Temple this year and observes all the Jewish holidays. Every year she and I exchange gifts; normally I give her jewelry and she gives me a fun beauty product, but this year I want to give her something more meaningful.

The menorahs posted on FabSugar are so beautiful, but I'm not sure if this would be an appropriate gift for my boss. What do you think? If I don't buy her a menorah, what other gift ideas can you suggest for the boss who has everything? Shopped Out Sasha

I think a menorah would be a great and thoughtful gift for your boss. There are so many beautiful ones to choose from, as you saw on FabSugar, and since Hanukkah is eight days long, you can never have too many.

Menorahs can also be displayed year round on a mantel or a dining room table so your gift could be viewed as home decor in addition to a ceremonial piece. If you decide to not go the menorah route, a bottle of good wine is always an excellent gift as is a treatment at a local day spa.

Many restaurants sell gift certificates so if you know of a new hot spot that your boss has never been too, that could be another option. Shopping for someone that has everything is no small task and can feel somewhat impossible. Do You Avoid Saying Merry Christmas?

In today's Washington Times one writer laments the fact that retailers fear using the word "Christmas" in their festive advertising. The article explains that for sales going down on Dec. 26, "among major retail chains, only Kohl's and Rite-Aid have used the word Christmas regularly and prominently in their advertising."

Around this time of year, I tend to say "Happy Holidays" because there are so many holidays going on - Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, New Year's, etc. But depending on the audience or the date (for example, Christmas Eve), I have no problem saying "Merry Christmas."

While it makes some sort of sense for retailers to use a generic term to appeal to more customers, do you find that you avoid saying "Merry Christmas" so you don't offend anyone?

Thinking outside the fake-news (gift)box last night, Stephen Colbert premiered A Colbert Christmas: The Greatest Gift of All. John Legend sang about his love of nutmeg, while Jon Stewart took the opportunity to teach Stephen about Hanukkah with his own serenade. Other guests included Willie Nelson, Elvis Costello, Toby Keith, and Feist.

If you missed the union of two of my favorite things in the world - the holiday season and Stephen Colbert - you can buy the DVD or download it on iTunes tomorrow. New Holiday Ad Tells You to Be Good, but Not For God's Sake

"Why believe in a god? Just be good for goodness's sake." That's the message about to be proclaimed on the side of Washington, DC buses this holiday season. Firing the first shot in what could shape up to be a hard-fought War on Christmas, the American Humanists Association is ready to claim a little holiday turf from traditional religions.

Following in the footsteps of its British counterparts who put atheist ads on London buses, the humanist group hopes the American version will bring some holiday cheer to atheists and agnostics feeling left out during the holiday season. The American Family Association, which wants to keep Christ in Christmas, thinks it's a "stupid ad." To find out what the group had to say the merit of the ad's message, read more.

The president of the American Family Association said: "How do we define 'good' if we don't believe in God? God in his word, the Bible, tells us what's good and bad and right and wrong. If we are each defining what's good, it's going to be a crazy world."

If celebrations like Hanukkah and Christmas are rooted in religious beliefs, should atheists just expect to feel a little lonely during the holidays, or are the holidays for the religious and nonreligious alike?
