McCain Attends 50th Reunion and My Exclusive Age Research

John McCain is heading to the Naval Academy for his 50th class reunion this weekend. By that complicated math, you can figure it means he graduated in 1958. McCain will definitely be attending the football game this afternoon between Navy and Rutgers.

The pending reunion and longtime, er, awareness of McCain's age led me to conduct a highly scientific opinion poll of his relative fitness to serve among those who might best know: my grandpa's table mates at his retirement home. Of the five senior citizens assembled, three men and two women, the youngest was 85 years old, the oldest was 91. When asked the question, "Is John McCain too old to be president?" the answer split evenly on gender lines. Both women said that yes, in their opinion 72 was too old to be starting a first term as president. Specifying the first term keeps Ronald Reagan in mind, presumably, who was 72 when campaigning for his second term.

The men saw it entirely differently. To them, 72 was just a "young man," and given his time as a POW, they felt he had more than proved his physical rigor, making his health not a concern. Keeping in mind the youngest man in the survey was McCain's age 13 years ago, does their experience with the age - and how they've felt since - provide a convincing argument?

While you consider that, for the record and in the interest of scientific transparency, it was a survey over spaghetti, not soup . . .

When I was a kid my grandpa used to boast: "I shook the hand, that shook the hand of Abraham Lincoln." Only one handshake removed, my grandfather was born one hundred years after the 16th President - who was born exactly 200 years ago today!

Two centuries after his birth, Lincoln's legacy lives in a bright light. Lincoln may have been the Republican Party's first president, but he is quite admired by today's Democratic president. Barack Obama used Lincoln's team of rivals as inspiration for his cabinet, and became the second president to use Lincoln's bible at his inauguration. (Lincoln himself was the first.)

Poke! The Chinese Premiere Logs in to Facebook

Since the earthquake, Chinese Premiere Wen Jiabao has made a bunch of friends. Over 13,000 of them to be exact - according to his hopping Facebook profile. He's become wildly popular for his fast and feeling response to the May 12 earthquake. At one disaster site, a collapsed school, the 66-year-old politician called out these touching words of comfort: "This is Grandpa Wen Jiabao, hang on child, we will rescue you!"

Since the creation of his page two days after the quake, Wen has gotten messages posted on his wall like "I love you, oh my God," "a model Premier for the world!" and the text-rageous, "it's so great 2 see u here!" For wasting no time rolling up his sleeves and heading to the worst hit locations with a bullhorn and hard hat, he seems to have eclipsed President Hu Jintao (who has no Facebook page of his own). Saying things like, "the central government hasn't forgotten about this place. We will rescue those who are injured. If the roads are blocked, we'll use airplanes to lift them out," he provided comfort. But was it enough? Chinese parents are now lashing out at the government for suspect construction that allowed the schools to collapse in the first place. In one school of 900, only 13 made it out of the rubble. Can Grandpa Wen Jiabao help them forget?

Looking Back: Which Party's Convention Was the Best?

Phew. I've run into quite a few people over the past few weeks who've seen both conventions top to bottom, and the question came up last night after the last balloon settled: Which convention was the best? In my mind it can be answered on a couple of levels - which convention looked the best, or which was more fun - but when it comes down to it, I think the real question is: Which convention did its job the best?

My mom reported in after McCain's speech saying, "I was worried when McCain started, but was in tears at the end. Your grandpa wanted me to take him to the post office to sign up again." While that's a rousing testimony to be sure, they were solid McCain voters before anyone set foot in St. Paul. So what do you all think? You've seen our coverage of both conventions - which party's did its job with an A++ super-gold star?

You Asked: Why Do I Feel So Guilty?

Dear Sugar,

After coming back from college, I decided to move in with my grandma while I continued my graduate degree. At the time, it seemed like a great move: My grandpa had recently passed away, my grandma needed some company, the college I was attending was nearby, and I had landed a job right near her. Now, two years later, I have finished grad school, and my boyfriend and I have decided to take our relationship to the next level. We've started to look for apartments and plan on moving in together, but I'm having a really hard time breaking the news to my grandma. I feel guilty leaving her alone, and she has voiced on several occasions (after hearing about other family members moving in with their boyfriends) that she opposes couples living together before marriage. I am 24 years old and am definitely ready to move on, so how do I break this news without hurting her? Would it be so bad to fib about the boyfriend being involved in the move? - Cautious Cassandra

Dear Cautious Cassandra,

While I completely understand the guilt you must feel over the idea of leaving your grandma alone, it's important for you to move on with your life and your relationship. Since she's no doubt grown very accustomed to living with you, when you do break the news, let her know that you plan on visiting her as often as you can and do everything in your power to follow through with that promise.

Now about not telling her that you're moving in with your boyfriend . . . if you anticipate her ever coming over to visit you, it won't take long for her to realize that you lied, but if she tends to stay home and wait for you to visit her, you could just leave your boyfriend out of the moving equation all together. What she won't know won't hurt her right?

Since I don't know how close your grandma is to your other family members who are bound to know the truth about your living situation, it might behoove you to just be honest with her from the start, even if it does upset her. Our grandparents' generation has very different beliefs on many things, but that doesn't necessarily mean that she won't understand. At the end of the day, you know how much your grandma can stomach, so trust your instincts and tell her what you feel comfortable sharing. Good luck!
